Kids are fine in masks don’t fall for the monthly Atlantic click bait article

for real. my students don’t even complain. i’m convinced any student that does complain or won’t comply is because of their parents. i have over 150 students and none of them make it an issue.

My oldest is six. He has slight bit of asthma. He wears a mask to school, doesn't bother taking it off during mask break, wears it on the way home, and falls asleep with it on. I have to remind him he has a mask on and he should take it off. He's in a mask from 9-4 with a break only during lunch. He's old enough to have worked in the textile mills a century ago, I'm sure kids his age and older can handle masks without issue.

Parents in La Crescenta gathered outside the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station Monday night, demanding deputies investigate a man reportedly harassing children as they walked home from school.

When a deputy arrived at the scene, he told Ned that he couldn’t determine that any crime had occurred and instead reprimanded the children.

“He decided to lecture the kids about freedom of speech instead of taking their names and writing an incident report,” said [parent Emily] Lanigan.

Jail the man, throw the cop into the sea.

The Venn diagram of people who want to abolish child labor laws and people who think kids wearing masks harms them is a circle.

Sweden has decided against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-11, the Health Agency said on Thursday, arguing that the benefits did not outweigh the risks.

Sweden has decided against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-11, the Health Agency said on Thursday, arguing that the benefits did not outweigh the risks.

"With the knowledge we have today, with a low risk for serious disease for kids, we don't see any clear benefit with vaccinating them," Health Agency official Britta Bjorkholm told a news conference.

She added that the decision could be revisited if the research changed or if a new variant changed the pandemic. Kids in high-risk groups can already get the vaccine.

Pretty dumb decision. The vaccination rollout in NA has shown that there is basically zero risk for kids when receiving the vaccine. While kids are obviously not hugely at risk of severe illness with COVID compared to older people, we still don't know the full long-term effects of long COVID, but we do know that the vaccines seem to help prevent it. Additionally, while kids individually are less at-risk from COVID (for severe illness), as a group there are still a large number being hospitalized. Like...why not at least allow parents to get their kids vaccinated if they want to? Sweden has been dumb about this whole pandemic.

The concept of herd immunity that all of us thought we were moving to is clearly no longer something that is possible.

The goal of vaccination is now there to prevent serious illness and death.  If there is a negligible chance of serious illness, why recommend vaccination?

IMHO, the reason to vaccinate 5-11 year-olds is with the hope that it provides protection against a future variant that isn't so mild for children.  But, I get why a health organization wouldn't think that this should be a priority.

Sweden has also been wrong about everything this Pandemic.

Children should be vaccinated because covid is still a top ten cause of death for children in the U.S. ages 0-14 per cdc data outside of assault, homicide, and suicide. Kids just don’t really die otherwise! And further reducing the rate of sickness and death though relatively harmless inoculation is good actually

Vaccination currently does not meaningfully decrease the rate of death in children, so as an issue of national health policy it is pretty unimportant, though I think parents should be afforded the option. That could change with future variants though.

Children should be vaccinated because as we have seen, each variant is different than the last and Omicron has made kids more sick than others. Waiting until something comes along that really puts kids in the hospital and then scrambling to get them all vaccinated is dumb and shortsighted.

There is no reason not to vaccinate them.

A group of German, Austrian and Swiss immigrants has implanted an ideologically driven settlement in one of the country’s poorest regions

Quote

A 1,600-hectare (4,000-acre) gated community, dubbed El Paraíso Verde, or the Green Paradise, is being carved out of the fertile red earth of Caazapá, one of Paraguay’s poorest regions.

The community’s population – consisting mainly of German, Austrian and Swiss immigrants – will eventually swell from 150 to 3,000, according to the owners.

The project’s website bills it as “by far the largest urbanization and settlement project in South America”, describing the colony as a refuge from “socialist trends of current economic and political situations worldwide” – as well as “5G, chemtrails, fluoridated water, mandatory vaccinations and healthcare mandates”.

Death isn’t the only problem! Hospitalizations, severe sickness, post Covid effects (like MIS-C) are important if rare to prevent against (and the vaccines do just that!)

also per cdc:

Quote

COVID-19 associated hospitalizations and deaths are similar to or exceed the pre-vaccine-era burden of other vaccine preventable diseases, such as Hepatitis A, Varicella, Influenza, Meningococcal disease and Rubella.

Kids should be vaccinated! This isn’t fucking hard to see!
