An equally interesting question is what would Bernie supporters do if he lost the general? I don't know, but I'm nearly at the point that I want to see Sanders get the nomination just to see what would happen. Are all the Bernie supporters correct that it would motivate the left base and he would win with record turn outs, or not? What would the argument be then, especially if he lost the popular vote?

Put me in the same boat.  He polls better than Warren against Trump, (which I find odd given the socialist label, but the trend's been pretty consistent) and I think Biden will be easily defeated for aforementionted reasons; Buttigieg, meanwhile, just can't seem to gain traction.  At least Sanders will let us know whether the party can win by focusing on energizing the left base--at least against a relatively unpopular president--or whether that's still a recipe for a McGovern-style defeat.

As long as there isn't an eagleton type blunder and the party elites don't abandon for Trump (as was the case in 72, now we're full of supposed "anyone but Trump"-ers) I think we'll do fine. Polling for McGovern was always below Nixon (but stood a chance with Ted Kennedy on the ticket) but Bernie is just about a point shy of Bidens numbers in virtually every state and nationally
