skillzdadirecta
Dear god movie trailers were so bad back then I don't think trailers started to become good and an artform themselves until the late 90's early 2000's.
Bacon
Hard to think of any clut films. I don't really know if I have really seen any. Like, I don't know if they count or not but I can just list some. Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny Drive Blade Runner 2049 Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The Wizard Mario Bros. Movie I don't really think of any of them as cult films tho, especially Drive and Blade Runner 2049. I haven't really seen many cult films, or at least I don't like them enough to say they are a favorite.

I don't know about Drive or Blade Runner 2049. The other three I just don't think have enough passionate fans to be considered Cult films. I remember Kevin Smith fans being pretty disappointed in Jay and Silent Bob.

I haven't seen the last 3 movies since I was 13 or younger, I just liked them a bunch as a kid. And yeah, I was watching Jay and Silent Bob at the same time I was watching shit like The Wizard. I couldn't get into Clerks as a kid because it was in black and white but there were some parts that were still funny. Like, 37 dicks. I think Kevin smith himself is the cult. I don’t think any one movie he has made has a huge following but if you combine them all there are a lot of Kevin Smith fans. Bloodporne
Well, okay, I didn't realize how difficult this'd be despite initially asking the question! In no particular order: Blue Velvet - Possibly one of my favorite films ever and probably my favorite cult movie. Everything I love about David Lynch, it's beautiful, evil, weird, eerie and yet oddly heartfelt and honest in equal measures. Special nod to the fantastic, moody sound design. Every single time this plays in an indie theater near me or anything, I go see it and it's always fantastic. Nosferatu (1979) - This has a special place in my heart as it's just...intensely German. Dramatic, somewhat self-indulgent, distant and yet fucking gorgeous, poetic and holistic. It's not a Horror film per say, it's too archaic and feels more like a stage play, and I think it was harshly judged by viewers at the time looking for a HORROR movie. I saw this as a kid back in the old country and some of its imagery always stuck with me. Showgirls - Don't let the trailer fool you, this is a Paul Verhoeven movie after all. This movie is like an unintentional monument to trashy American excess as observed by a European outsider and based on Verhoeven interviews I've read, this was to be his Godfather moment. The fact this was all unintentional puts the absolutely insane amounts of sleaze, self-indulgence, sheer tastelessness, terrible everything and RIDICULOUS dialog over the edge for me. I've probably seen this like twenty times at this point and it used to be a huge party hit among my friends when I had it on VHS. It's basically the Mona Lisa of materialistic trash and I love it. Maniac - It's not just the, for the time, absolutely vicious levels of graphic violence but there's something really unsettling and moody about this flick. It captures the zeitgeist of NYC at that point as I'd imagine it to be and made quite the impression on me. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Maybe debatable if this is a true "cult film" but based on it somewhat flying under the radar initially and all, I do feel like it is on some level. The story, performances, dialog, mood, cinematography...everything are basically flawless here and that's not mentioning just how genuinely beautiful and wistful of a movie this is. There's some really brutal truths about relationships laid out here like the scene at the Chinese restaurant. I can't watch it too often but I love this film. There are many more but I have to wrap it up for now, got shit to do. Also, many of my other favorites have already been mentioned. The Warriors, Evil Dead and so on. All the movies I recognize on here so far are ones I also love.
skillzdadirecta
HOW IN THE HELL DID I FORGET ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND?! Showgirls is a good pick too... that movie is Rocky Horror Picture show level bad. That Fulm Crit Hulk dude should do an essay on THAT movie because that is a textbook example of a Camp Masterpiece

That Fulm Crit Hulk dude should do an essay on THAT movie because that is a textbook example of a Camp Masterpiece I already ranted about it but man, Showgirls truly is a like a monument to all things unintentionally tasteless, trashy and creepy. It's like every single aspect adds to its garbage level in unexpected ways. The audio mix is even incredibly funny somehow and over supposedly loud Vegas show music you constantly hear her grunt and moan and shoes clacking, it's so awkward and weird. Then there's Verhoeven's weird fetish obsession with trashy manicures haha...there are more scenes involving this than Tarantino has foot scenes. To top it all, there's this incredibly hideous outburst of sexual violence completely out of the blue because he just can't control himself. It's a masterpiece of tastelessness all around. PS: Kyle MacLachlan's insanely funny, terri-bad performance in this was not intentional either somehow. He was interviewed for a special edition and basically said he had no idea, and neither did anyone else, just how fucking bad it all was until it bombed spectacularly upon release. Verhoeven was convinced it was a classic and incredibly offended when the studio tried to re-release it as a "so bad it's great cult classic" a short while later to recover some costs. The best part of it is the samples used in those Bleeding Through songs. (There got you back for American Psycho ) I actually also hate this movie. There's something really try-hard edgy about it to me and even the title somehow annoys me. I do, duh, really like the American Psycho film and did read the book first. I get the criticism but to me it's still a fucking great movie and ultra cult.
SoberChef
Maniac is decent but I prefer Elijah Woods' remake. Granted, that gritty, guerilla film making format is gone, but the way you're in the POV of the killer for the bulk of the film just gives you this grimy guilty feeling of being responsible for the nastiness that takes place. This just made me remember two other awesome flicks I am a huge fan of:

I'll be honest, I couldn't make it more than 20 minutes through that remake. The soundtrack, cinematography and time and place of the original are a huge factor of me liking it as much as I do and this was way too "modern" for me all around. Also Elijah Wood will never not be a fucking hobbit to me so this was a huge miss for me. It's certainly probably more interesting than some (most) other remakes but it did nothing for me. Unrelated, but I'll add this one while it's fresh on my mind: Jacob's Ladder - This film made a huge impression on me when I saw it in my late teens. Surely Silent Hill must've been massively inspired by its unsettling nightmare imagery. I'm still bummed they never did a director's cut with the deleted scenes intact, they clearly shed further light on the sometimes confusing timeline and so on. I also love Fatal Attraction by Lyne but some of the sequences captured here are extremely memorable and crazy.

Personally I'd say they're pretty much quintessential cult flicks, especially Big Trouble. Funny enough, my local indie theater does a thing called Summer Camp (good name too) which shows cult and campy shit all summer long as double features each Saturday. They've shown both of these every time.
