Your Favorite Cult Films (This is Bloodporne's Idea)

Top 5 and everyone posts more than 5.

Also what constitutes as "cult" a lot of these seem popular.

I'd throw in House of the Devil if it counts as a cult movie.

Cult movies, by my definition, are movies that did not become popular until later in their life. So movies that didn’t do particularly well at the box office but became popular over time on video through word of mouth. Princess Bride is a perfect example. It’s obviously hugely popular now but it’s still a cult film.

Being not popular isnt a requirement but really the term "cult" is fairly open to interpretation. If I had to define it would be a film that was first overlooked or panned by critics and/or movie goers but overtime built a following. Carpenters The Thing was destroyed when it released to theaters but now you would be hard pressed not to find in most folks top 10 horror films of all time.

Yeah I'm in no mood to debate with anyone what the definition of a cult film is... if you don't know than this probably isn't the thread for you.

How the hell have you people not mentioned EVIL DEAD/ARMY OF DARKNESS yet in series of cult films. Good call on Donnie Darko and The Guyver. Hope to eventually see more love and talk for Upgrade. Haven’t seen any of them but Fubar I see mentioned a lot too

I guess for us North Americans I would throw in the IP MAN series

Damn you guys are pulling out some good ones... most I've seen but have forgotten about. Upgrade is DEFINITELY a future cult classic as more people get exposed to it through cable and streaming. I could probably fill this thread with nothing but Asian films as I was heavily into Hong Kong action films in the 90's. Here's a couple more...

@skillzdadirecta Wow ive never met anyone else that likes Brotherhood of the Wolf. It’s one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time.

Also American Psycho is great...until you read the book and realize how much the movie misses the mark.

Dude I saw that movie in the theater when it came out and bought the special edition dvd as soon as I was able to. I freaking love that crazy assed movie lol

How the hell did I forget about BLACK DYNAMITE and AMERICAN PSYCHO. it’s funny to think of movies you love and think “is it” You forget movies like Princess Bride, Scott Pilgrim and hell the first Austin Powers. If it weren’t for its cult status on video, we wouldn’t of gotten the other 2.

I think of Cult classics as movies that not just got popular after their release, but gained a dedicated fanbase over time. Movies like Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

But then you also have things like Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob where their cult following is more to the universe and characters than the actual movies themselves.

Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes just got stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. Fucking Jay "Clit Master" Mewes is on the Hollywood walk of fame. Let that sink in.

That said, my favorites are:

Night of the Living Dead

Army of Darkness

Clerks

Nightmare Before Christmas

Dead Alive

Big Trouble in Little China

Cheech n Chong Up In Smoke

I was fed a healthy diet of Joe Bob Briggs growing up.

Please tell me you have Shudder & enjoy all the programming of "The Last Drive In"!?

Also, having gone through all these posts seeing:

  • The Raid
  • The Thing
  • The Crow
  • The Last Dragon
  • The Warriors

How can I even add to that list, as they are all absolutely phenomenal!?

I will say this however, and also add to the David Patrick Kelly love that seemingly so many of share...

I do NOT have SHUDDER... is it worth it? Are there films on there that you don't get anywhere else?

Its only like $5/month and totally worth it as they are always adding to it, have a decent amount of original programming, a few solid horror related documentaries, and as stated about Joe Bob's Last Drive In, that alone is worth supporting them for! What's great is that they release them as individual episodes after they air so you can pick & choose which movies they've shown with his commentary and have a good time with. Also a lot of support for indie horror as well which is always appreciated!

I edited the topic title since we're clearly past naming five films. I thought of a couple more this morning.

Boondock Saints is probably my most disliked cult movie. Truly terrible. The best part of it is the samples used in those Bleeding Through songs.

(There got you back for American Psycho :p  )
