I was wrong about...everything. Nice.

Don't quote me on that but I think so... I saw the Ninja build use a smoke bomb thing that I don't think you can use as the Samurai. That gameplay vid showed them tackling the same enemy camp with both approaches and they were pretty different.

Is the whole Samurai/Ninja thing interchangeable or are they two different builds/playstyles? Can you create a hybrid of the two? Can you use both in one playthrough?

A good question because to me they are different classes, as it were, with very different fighting styles, codes of honor (or lack thereof), etc.

EXACTLY.

Here's some break down of the gameplay shown in the demo.

https://www.ign.com/articles/ghost-of-tsushima-gameplay-story-details-revealed

Quote
  • Jin can challenge enemies to a standoff in the environment.
  • Combat shown near a shipyard shows Jin using only a single slice to fell each enemy.
  • "Every strike must count,"
  • Players can parry enemies, and doing so at the last possible moment will open them up to attacks.
  • Change combat stances to inflict the most damage on enemies.
  • The same shipyard combat sequence is shown as a stealthy option. Jin uses distractions to silently sneak up on enemies as the titular Ghost.
  • Distractions include firecrackers, which Jin can use to lure enemies out of hiding and assassinate them. If quickly enough, Jin can assassinate multiple enemies before being spotted.
  • Smoke bombs can be used to avoid attacks and evade enemies who spot Jin.
  • Kunai can be used for quick kills.
  • The Mongols will "learn to fear the Ghost" and may even attempt flee Jin's stealthier actions, which players can use to their advantage.
  • Jin's grappling hook can be used to swing across gaps or climb up ledges.
  • An environmental attack is shown, as Jin uses the Mongol's own weapons as an explosive, destroying their cache and eventually decimating the shipyard.
  • Jin can be customized with various armor, which gives different mechanical advantages. It is not just cosmetic.
  • Players will discover charms that give Jin different benefits.
  • Players can choose the techniques with skill points they wish to give Jin and customize his attack strategy depending on their playstyle.

So it seems that there's more to the different playstyles than just cosmetic options. I'm curious to how the Samurai gameplay works because it seems like they are really drawing on Kurosawa films for that aspect and that you can end encounters with one perfectly timed strike. I dig that and it will make the samurai playstyle a lot more appealing to me because of it. I'll be able to live out my Myamoto Musashi/Vagabond fantasies :p

A lot of us would score it far higher. The things that set it back for me have to do with polish, as I recall.

For me it was pacing... the game takes a little too long to get  to the meat of it but once it DOES.... The core gameplay loop is pretty well done. In fact, I still have some hordes I need to take down

Story takes a while to get going, yeah. I remember that very well. :p

Seconding the gameplay loop. Every side thing is a lot of fun, riding into a horde unknowingly is an amazing feeling, every one feels rewarding, and while I'm not a stickler for it, I respect Bend for making each side mission or side activity related to the main story.

I still see Days Gone pop up a lot, just not on here. People seemed to warm up to it as a solid 7/10 'pretty alright!' type of game.

It was a 9/10 for me, it was one of my favorite games last year and is one of my favorites this gen in general. My only real issue with it were its performance issues, it needed a tad bit more polish. But otherwise it was a solid game throughout.

As for Ghost of Tsushima, it looks good but not great IMO. It looks like a typical third person open world action game, but with a feudal Japan setting and samurai theme. I'm not real big on games grounded in reality or based on historical accuracy, I tend to like them to have some fantasy, horror, or sci-fi elements in them to spice things up. Also, I tend to prefer playing as female protagonists in games. If I have to stare at a character's backside for hours at a time while playing then I prefer it to be a female's. ;) I'm much more excited for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla than I am for Ghost of Tsushima, but I'll still probably check it out when I can get it for cheap.

My opinion that nobody talks about Days Gone wasnt hinting that it wasnt a good game or that it didnt get supported, its just that whenever someone is talking about PS4 games there's always plenty of talk about Horizon ZD, God of War, Spiderman, TLOU, etc. and Days Gone is usually a passing comment or excluded entirely.

It’s a more controversial game than any of the above.  Pre and post release.  Naturally it doesn’t have the same clout.  But it gets talked about plenty, because everyone has opinions on if it was underrated or not. Also because Bend hasn’t been a proven commodity in the console space in a long time.

Also no one talks about Gravity Rush 2 anymore.  How often you see a game name-dropped doesn’t always correlate to quality.

Since were in a Ghosts of Tsushima thread... whose mind goes back to Infamous: Second Son?  I swear, more people still talk about The Order than that game.

How Will You Play Ghosts of Tsushima?

Samurai Cinema mode seems interesting but maybe for a second playthrough.

For those who don't know, the game features a number of key options. In terms of gameplay, main character Jin can either fight as a samurai or as the infamous Ghost. The former appears to be all about deft swordplay and deadly duels, while the latter sees Jin take on the role of a ninja, using subterfuge and deception to get the jump on his enemies.

On top of that, the title offers an optional Samurai Cinema mode, which looks amazing. This mode applies a grainy black and white filter to the entire game, complete with more dramatic wind effects. It's designed to make the experience look like a classic samurai movie, and boy is it effective.

I'm getting more and more hyped for this the more I learn about it.

Have they said if you have to choose one path or another? Like in AC you can just run in and kill everyone or try to attack an area with stealth.

Its one thing that’s kinda bugged me about AC for awhile. You’re usually so OP in combat that there’s really no reason to play stealthily except you just enjoy playing the game that way.

Id love if Ghosts made you choose to be one style or another.

Yeah I'm not sure if you're locked into one playstyle or not or if you can switch back and forth.

It'd be a cool option to still have the red blood in the b/w mode. Not faithful but seems like it'd be a sweet option for photo mode.

Also it dawned on me that we practically got Shogun Assassin: The Game with Sekiro and now we're getting Kurosawa: The Game in one gen.

Indeed, between Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Nioh/Nioh 2, and Ghost of Tsushima, we've been quite blessed for those into period samurai/ninja settings (like myself). After a dearth of good games that are set in that period for years, it's been kind of crazy to get so many good ones at once.

I remember back when myself and others wanted an Assassin's Creed: Japan. Now we really don't need one.

Hmmma... Sekiro reminds me more of Ninja Scroll with all of the supernatural elements but I get your point. The red blood against black and white would be VERY cool. I hope that's an option.

I dropped Shogun Assassin for the overall slightly-crazy, dingy vibe. But thanks for reminding me of Ninja Scroll. I saw it once as a teenager maybe and loved it but that's it.

That’s also true.

It has a very loyal and passionate following. Look at all the Kat avatars on Reset. I thought she was one hell of a charming protagonist.

Persusing that thread you can tell folks in there actually played the game rather than you know, hear about it.

Most who "heard" about it tend to be Xbox fanboys who were waiting for a miss from Sony. People are tribal and weird.

It's a great game. <3

I just love how zero fucks can be given when picking up materials. No animations, and not even a need to get off the horse when riding by materials—you just grab them by proxy.

Im not sure if you’re being sarcastic but I actually really did love that. It’s a game, we really don’t mundane animations for every little stupid thing. Glad they understand that. Unlike another absolute piece of crap, worst game of all time, stab my self in the head from boredom, game that shall not be named.

I remember the first time I saw it... we had gotten a bootleg of it from Chinatown on VHS and it had a black and white xerox for the case and it was called "Wind Ninja Chronicles" which I think is the literal translation of the title. We watched that thing until the tape popped  Ninja  Resurrection (which was mismarketed as a sequel to Ninja Scroll in some parts of the country) was also popular in my neck of the woods. Too bad they never finished the story. They released two of three parts.

I had an anime nerd friend when I was like 18 or 19 and he had a crazy VHS collection. I remember Ninja Scroll and Curse of the Undead Yoma the most. Both of those were killer. I hope Amazon Prime has Ninja Scroll for rent, I'd love to see it again.

I'm pretty sure I still have my copy of Ninja Scroll on VHS. If I don't it's because I upgraded to the Blu-Ray sometime ago.
