Spork3245 Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 My fiancé is forcing me to pick a Christmas present, and there’s really nothing I want. It’s between an adapter that will give me wireless CarPlay in my car or an Oculus Quest. I already have a Vive, and I haven’t played any games on it in awhile, which I think is mostly because moving my large coffee table is a PITA. I know the Quest doesn’t need cameras or base stations to be used, so I won’t be restricted to the room where my PC is, which means I may use this more frequently. How well does the room-scale and tracking stuff work without base stations or cameras? Compared to my Vive? I heard that you can get a cable to attach the Quest to your PC and basically turn it into a Rift S... true? Has anyone else gone from an OG Vive to a Quest? How would you compare it? Did you dump your Vive? Quote

Yes, they are releasing a cable that lets you tether it to PC and use it as a wired, high end VR headset. It can do this because its screen tech is up there with the higher end units. Edit: the tracking on the Quest is really good actually! I think you will be fairly impressed with it. 1 Quote

(ie: should I save my pennies for a Valve Index? ) Quote

Its definitely a lateral move from a tech prospective, or even a slight step back (very slight!) BUT, the freedom and ease of use that comes with the quest is honestly its best selling point. You know me, I like the latest tech and I'm a graphics whore for the ages! That said, the Quest really is a great case for "good enough" tech enabling a better overall experience. As a bonus, now you can play all of those Oculus games without having to dick around with "Revive"! Quote

I may be best off just holding out until the next headsets which should offer: wireless, no base stations, and a full/natural fov (basically a combination of the Quest/S and Valve Index). In the meantime it sounds like I should just get the Valve knuckle controllers for my Vive. Quote

Yeah, if you are looking for an upgrade, only the index will truly offer you more and frankly its optics are still not enough to justify going from the Vive to it. Quote

Yea, it just seems like the next releases will be more than incremental. If the Quest didn’t have a narrower fov compared to the OG Vive it might be worth it because it sounds like the 72hz vs 90hz isn’t even noticeable. Quote

skillzdadirecta Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Occulus Quest gets VR Hand Tracking "Look Ma! No controllers!" Quote Starting this week, the Oculus Quest VR headset becomes even more tantalizing by adding a feature we've never seen ship as a built-in option in a VR system: hand tracking. VR users will be able to put down their controllers and use their fingers to manipulate VR worlds, as tracked by Quest's array of built-in cameras. The feature received a tease at October's Oculus Connect 6 conference and got an "early 2020" launch window from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. But someone on the Oculus engineering team clearly ignored Lord Zuck in getting this feature out the door a bit early, and it will land in an "experimental" tab in Quest's settings menus as a free update by week's end. Today's news comes with two important asterisks. First, there's no fully fledged VR software available for the feature yet. At launch, the experimental feature will only work within Oculus Quest's root menu, which at least includes photo and multimedia viewing tabs. Within "a week" of the toggle going live, a Software Development Kit (SDK) for Quest hand tracking will go live for Oculus developers, which will allow them to tap into Oculus' hand-tracking system and potentially implement it in various games and apps.
