But @Keyser_Soze is right. :]

Additionally, Code: Veronica was built from the ground up with the Dreamcast in mind and came out on that system first in February 2000. The RE1 remake was built from the ground up with the GameCube in mind, and came out in March 2002, two years later, and the GameCube was a decently more powerful console than the Dreamcast (on top of the reasons Keyser gave).

Oh, I know all that stuff at the end; that's what is so amazing to me. Gamecube was more powerful, but with the consoles releasing just two years apart, the difference was still pretty astounding. I feel like DC and PS2 more resemble each other, with GC and Xbox being able to show better texture work that was in a different league at the time. Not sure if RE4 had pre-rendered backgrounds or not, but that looked lovely on the GC.

I'd expect a big difference in different gens or even the beginning and end of a generation, but it's still stunning to see that kind of difference in the look of the characters in the span of two years in one generation. If DC survived, I feel like we would have seen its age much, much earlier, in addition to its one analog stick feeling dated for FPS games.

I would actually be okay with a remaster of Code Veronica... BUT it needs to be remastered from the original Dreamcast code... not that watered-down, muddy textured shit that is Code Veronica X. I had a VGA adapter for my Dreamcast and CV was sharp as a tack. You look at CVX, even via HDMI on an HDTV and it still looks like blurry garbage.

I definitely agree on all points, it is a big jump no question. It is surprising to see the Dreamcast come out in 1998 (in Japan) and the GameCube come out in 2001 (in Japan) and the difference in hardware, etc. is considerable with only a three year gap in release between them. Technological leaps for games used to be bigger back then, to be fair. The Dreamcast was building/improving on the Sega Saturn/PS1/N64 era, whereas the GameCube was building/improving on the Dreamcast/PS2.

I completely agree. One thing though: I think you're asking for a remake of Code: Veronica, not a remaster, since RE2 and RE3 are remakes, not remasters. Big difference since we get a lot of remasters of older games but remakes are pretty rare. I'm fairly certain a remake of Code: Veronica would be a pretty thorough rebuild of the game since there'd be a lot to fix/improve upon, which is why I'm interested in a remake for it in the first place. Could be a really good remake if done right.

No, I meant remaster. Meaning I'd be totally ok with playing the original game as-is, but with higher resolutions and maybe a few lighting tweaks. Since CV was technically "3D" they don't have to do a full-on remake (though I wouldn't be opposed to that either). They could replace character models and assets, as well as tweak rendering, lighting, etc. which is a freedom they didn't have with earlier RE's. They could even tweak the camera if they really wanted to.

Hell, there was even first person shooter bonus game in CV that was actually pretty cool.

Ah, my bad! I'd prefer a remake, and I don't think at this point Capcom would just remaster it and release it after now having done remakes of RE2 and RE3, but it's certainly possible. I'd take a remaster as well though, and I agree it needs to be from the Dreamcast's original code.

Phew, reading some of these reviews, this isn't sounding like the improvement over RE2R (which was great in its own right) I was expecting or well hoping for.

Seems like there's a lot of cut content including iconic locations that's substituted with other areas being padded and a retread of an area from RE2R.

I think the few locations they cut are actually an improvement, and RE3 was never as good as RE2 to begin with, and probably could never be, since it's the transition game between RE2's pure survival horror and RE4's more action-oriented take.

I think it'll be a blast and a great spectacle, which is about all it ever could be - it could never measure up to RE1 and RE2. Sounds like it improves on the original RE3 overall. But we'll see, most reviews I'm seeing are pretty positive, while saying it's not as good as RE2 (which was a given).

Just as the 1999 original was a more action-focused Resident Evil game that arguably helped pivot the franchise towards the iconic fourth instalment, this 2020 reimagining feels like last year’s game in many ways, only sped up and thirstier for zombie blood.

It treads the line between tension and action impressively, and Nemesis cements his legacy as one of the series’ most enduring creatures.

Another slam dunk remake from Capcom; one that is faithful while still feeling contemporary and exciting. This is a faster, tighter game than the remake of Resident Evil 2, with a cast of interesting characters and a better flow than the original.

The Digital Fix - 10 / 10

Resident Evil 3 is a worthy successor to the Resident Evil 2 remake in every respect. A perfect reimagining and one of the best entries in the Resident Evil franchise.

As last year's Resident Evil 2, this remake of Resident Evil 3 is an almost impeccable work from Capcom, redefining the meaning of what a remake is. A letter of love for all the fans out there.

While the game still stubbornly hangs on to a few of the original’s mechanical shortcomings, the vast majority of the package is a breathtaking recreation of material we fell in love with two decades ago.

Hobby Consolas - Spanish - 92 / 100

Resident Evil 3 is a brilliant remake. It is faithful to the original 1999 PSX game, with updated gameplay and graphics, but Capcom has been able to deepen its storyline, characters and connections with RE2. On the downside, you can finish it under 5 hours (first round).

Use a Potion - 9.2 / 10

Much like its predecessor, Resident Evil 3 offers a remake that’s both revolutionary and brilliant in design. It is shorter and more condensed than last year’s Resident Evil 2 remake, but it comes with a bigger focus on action-orientated set pieces and, of course, the epic showdowns with Nemesis. Add to that the all-new ideas that the game implements as well as the inclusion of a multiplayer mode (which admittedly we haven’t got to play a whole lot of yet), and you’ll quickly find that Capcom have something special here.

The shorter length and some frustrating moments here and there do see Resident Evil 3 feeling a little inferior when compared to the Resident Evil 2 remake, but only just – it still just so happens to be a brilliant survival horror experience that fans of the series are sure to love.

Resident Evil 3 is the third successive game after Resident Evil 7 that has managed to offer an exceptional experience to the players, and it seems like we have to get used to this successful formula that Capcom has created. Masterful presentation, eye-catching visuals, realistic 3D models and excellent characterization and storytelling are all enough reason to amuse all the player; whether old fans of the series or newcomers.

Capcom has once again delivered an incredible remake of a twenty year old classic. From it's incredible visuals to the excellent action-horror gameplay, the Resident Evil 3 remake succeeds in almost every aspect. Thanks to some masterful touches and a wealth of gameplay refinements, Capcom has made a game that feels right at home in the 2020 triple-A space and fans of the series will love every moment.

Resident Evil 3 follows in the footsteps of Resident Evil 2 by creating a great survival horror experience while revamping an old classic. While several sections from the original game are missing and it can be a tad linear, it's a great ride with very few low points, with the game ending as great as it started. Though the main game lacks features, Resident Evil Resistance should make up for it if it can maintain a strong playerbase.

Resident Evil 3 is a superb remake of the original, with Nemesis being the clear highlight. Although inventory management and aiming can be a problem, it's still a fantastic game.

Resident Evil 3 Remake does a great job of reclaiming the potential the original already had, one of the franchise's most underrated installments. Some extra modes or replayability variety would have been welcome.

The Resident Evil 3 Remake is a fantastic and consistently-tense horror game that takes an already brilliant game and updates it to be even better in a few departments.

Noisy Pixel - 9 / 10

Resident Evil 3 is a heart-pounding nightmare that blends survival horror and action elements perfectly with the help of its two protagonists. There’s so much to explore and discover during every moment of this thriller that it’s easy to forget about the horrors that await just around the corner. However, the limited puzzles and short length make it tough to justify the full price. But, like a zombie hungry for brains, I can’t seem to get enough of this game.

PSX Brasil - Portuguese - 90 / 100

Resident Evil 3 is another excellent Capcom title. Despite being a little short, it is challenging and encourages the player to finish it more than once. The story remains interesting and the gameplay is basically the same as in Resident Evil 2 Remake with some improvements (which is not a bad thing). The graphics and the sound effects are incredible. To make up for the short single-player campaign, Capcom presents us with the RE Resistance multiplayer, which has an interesting proposal and is a great addition to the package, but its long learning curve can keep some players away.

Comparing it to the last entry of the reborn franchise will be hard to avoid, just as it was while reviewing the title. As a standalone experience, RE3 is quite solid. The return of Resident Evil 3 manages to maintain the balance between memory and adaptation. Even if the renunciation of certain characteristic aspects of the original game could disappoint the most avid fans, the care taken in the reconstruction of the atmosphere and of the feeling it is visible an above all, perceivable. Nemesis could have been more time on the stage, of course, but even so its presence hovers in the apocalypse of Raccoon City, and when it finally manifests itself it is as beautiful as it is distressing. Though: twenty years later, its threat it can be put back into perspective and the blows exchanged between peers.

PlayStation LifeStyle - 8.5 / 10

All said, Resident Evil 3 is a brilliant reimagining of the horror classic, with plenty of surprises in store even for the longtime fans. Resident Evil 3 is the franchise's best action-driven entry since the glory days of Resident Evil 4. A beautifully-balanced combination of white-knuckle mayhem and satisfying old-school tension, Resident Evil 3 is compulsively-munchable popcorn entertainment that, unfortunately, disappears all too quickly. It was always a long shot that a new take on Resident Evil 3 was going to be able to live up to the expectations set by 2019's Resident Evil 2 remake, and that's exactly the case here. While last year’s Resident Evil 2 took the story and settings of the original game and expanded them into a finely tuned masterpiece, Resident Evil 3 feels like it took a much different approach. Resident Evil 3 is another incredible remake of this classic franchise, and it shows the infamous outbreak of Racoon City in a modern way. Given the success of Resident Evil 2, fans with high expectations will likely be disappointed with Resident Evil 3. While they did a fantastic job of modernizing the classic, a number of features were omitted, ultimately making it hard to recommend to fans. Between a short story, with no real reason to play it a second time, it falls short of what we saw with the last remake. Nevertheless, if you're okay with that shortcoming or want to see a new version of Jill's escape from Raccoon City, you'll likely not be too disappointed.

LevelUp - Spanish - 8 / 10

Resident Evil 3 is a different monster compared to last year release. While it lost some of his tetric atmosphere, a sense or urgency is gained in the form of Nemesis, a hulkin powerhose behind your heels. However, its short campaign, lack of replayability and forgettable multiplayer, will make this year Resident Evil a hard sell.

PC Invasion - 8 / 10

Quote

The Resident Evil 3 remake manages to take the core elements from the original and make them new again. The RE Engine also provides the right platform for extremely detailed facial animations and environments. Although this remake might run a rather linear course, don't let that deter you from jumping into this punchy, solid, action title that's extremely well-paced from start to finish. This is yet another example of Capcom taking an already great property and somehow making something new out of it while still respecting its own source material.

PlayStation Universe - 8 / 10

Resident Evil 3 is another stunning-looking revamp from Capcom that effortlessly manages to switch between tension-packed moments of genuine horror and bombastic action set pieces. Resident Evil 3 Remake is slightly disappointing after the stellar Resident Evil 2 Remake. It's still a good game, but its short length and lack of ambition mean that it will constantly be seen as the lesser sibling. The addition of the REsistance online mode should add some value for those who enjoy competitive online play, but the lack of single-player options is disappointing. All in all, it's a good follow-up to an amazing game, and as long as you're willing to forgive its foibles, RE3 Remake should be a fun return to Raccoon City for franchise faithfuls.

I've spent the last few thousand words explaining why RE3 isn't as good as RE2, but it's still a very good game. It's like a big, six-hour expansion pack. If you liked last year's RE2, you would enjoy this. Experienced players will want to give it a go on hardcore, as normal is pretty easy.

Digital Chumps - 7.5 / 10

Instead of modernizing 1999's Resident Evil 3, Capcom has remodeled 2019's remake of Resident Evil 2. Dazzling production and clever level design are still effective fuel for the survival horror engine, but this reliance on familiar techniques dissolves any expectation of novelty and ambition. In Resident Evil 3, Jill is less the subject of a despairing escape and more the product of a regulated, orderly departure.

GameZone - 7.5 / 10

Quote

While enjoyable and filled with plenty to enjoy, Resident Evil 3 unfortunately feels like an uneven mishmash of horror and action. It wants to do two things at once and while it does them in a passable way, it doesn't always feel like it reaches its full potential especially when following in the footsteps of Resident Evil 2 Remake.

TrueGaming - Arabic - 7.5 / 10

Fans of the series will be happy to go back to racoon city and face the nemesis again. Still, Resident Evil 3 is limited in its story and somewhat lacking in its content.

In the end, Resident Evil 3 suffers from not being as good as its predecessor. It's well-made with likable charismatic protagonists and is quite the roller coaster ride but when compared to the tense full-on survival horror game that preceded it, Resident Evil 3 feels like a step back. Still, if you're a fan and are dying for more, this is a solid game that will undoubtedly scratch that itch.

Resident Evil 3 remake is not necessarily bad, but it is absolutely disappointing. Maybe the bar set by RE2 remake was too high, but there is no denying that RE3 remake is not what it should have been. The balance between action and puzzles is gone and RE3 focuses too much on being an action game. Nemesis also appears very briefly, which is a huge disappointment. RE3 is not a bad game, but it's not a classic Resident Evil either.

Gameblog - French - 7 / 10

Resident Evil 3 is a good game that doesn't manage to reach the heights that Resident Evil 2 did. Nemesis has a great new look but he doesn't instill fear like Mr. X did last year. The game is also quite short. Resident Evil Resistance has an interesting concept but suffers from balancing and technical issues.

GamingBolt - 7 / 10

Resident Evil 3 constantly hints at greatness, but never quite reaches the heights of the PS1 original. It's a solid enough game, but not nearly as impressive as other recent Resident Evil titles, and not nearly as good as it could and should have been.

Resident Evil 3 Remake manages to deliver a somewhat authentic remake of the classic game. While it lacks some iconic areas and enemies, it does keep you at the edge of your seat as you face some rather deadly threats. Resident Evil 3 had the potential to better its classic predecessor, but a disappointing amount of cut content and the let down that is Nemesis hold it back from greatness. It's still an experience very much worth revisiting, with Raccoon City and the hospital receiving a lot of love and attention, however, it only makes us question what could have been that little bit more.

There’s a lot about Resident Evil 3 to love. Its combat is meatier, its linearity makes for an interesting change of pace, and Nemesis is pure nightmare fuel in all the right ways. The narrative is still a campy blast, crafted in such a way that hardcore fans and newcomers alike will adore Jill Valentine’s debut in the modern era, even if her journey is all too fleeting. Chances are this won’t be the last remake we’ll see in the iconic survival horror franchise, I just hope it learns from some of the mistakes made here.

It’s so damn good, but it’s disappointingly brief. The game looks stunning and it plays fantastically well, but I’ve beaten it twice and I don’t feel as though my hunger for Resident Evil has been satiated.

Resident Evil 3 finally repositions its place as not just a true sequel to Resident Evil 2, but as a bridge to Resident Evil 4, both in action and plot. While it streamlines the formula of Resident Evil 2 into something more linear, it's still the best way to dodge through Raccoon City with Jill and Carlos, even with Nemesis always on your tail and the occasional clunkiness here and there. With a breezy runtime, Resident Evil 3 is well worth revisiting. Just maybe not Resident Evil Resistance.

Enter the classic world of survival horror with Capcom's Resident Evil 3 Remake, a retelling that may, or may not, be what you were hoping for.

Resident Evil 2 set the standard for videogame remakes in 2019. Resident Evil 3 should serve as a cautionary tale for the pitfalls of videogame remakes in 2020.

It’s hard to shake the feeling that most of the Nemesis encounters and big action beats highlight the limitations of the simple and somewhat dated classic Resident Evil design of the first few entries in the series.

The remake of Resident Evil 3 makes a strong first impression, and its online companion game Resistance has some interesting ideas, but they both struggle to follow through.

It’s still worth playing, but Resident Evil 3 Remake is a step backwards for Capcom, coming off the back of one of the best games of last year. It’s gorgeous to look at, the jump scares will get you, and it’s like stepping into a comfy pair of slippers. But even though your feet are cosy, it never feels like home.

Both the Nemesis and Raccoon City are massively underused in this disappointing step back for the series.

A good title and enjoyable but very short and its replayability is limited greatly. The MP wasn't working even on day one and the beta MP was forgettable. Not bad just not as excellent as RE 2

If you want a memorable action video game, RE3 Remake will deliver—albeit briefly. If you want that action coupled with cheesy, relatable humanity, on the other hand, RE2 Remake is a better bet, if not a dive into your favorite binge-worthy zombie TV series.

When I first fired up Resident Evil 3, I worried that its tale of a pandemic turning cities into disease-plagued ghost towns would be more of a depressing reminder of our current reality than escapist entertainment. To wit: A live-action cinematic starts the game with doctors in hazmat suits and government officials telling of a CDC-enforced quarantine.

In hindsight, I'm not sure why the hell I expected them to flesh that game out in this remake, it's Capcom. On the sale list it goes.

It sounds like they've considerably improved upon the original base game, but it's similar to the original RE3 in much the same way the RE2 remake was a lot like the original RE2, so in that sense yeah, not sure what you expected. It's a remake, not a reimagining. :p

cdkeys had a slickdeal for this at $40 the other day, but even that felt too expensive before the positive reviews came out. I do want to play it, but I'm not interested in the multiplayer add-on, so maybe when it's $20 I'd bite. If anything, I really hope Capcom moves on and gets to remaking Outbreak where four-five players can go through a co-op scenario that isn't just a versus scramble.

Meaning the RE2 remake was very similar to the original RE2 in terms of locations, how it played, the enemies, etc. It had a gigantic visual and audio upgrade, of course, but the nuts and bolts of the game were very similar. RE2 was a classic, and so that's why the remake remained so good. RE3, while a good game, was never a classic like RE2 and was never as good as RE2, so the remake, similarly, is a good game, but not a classic nor as good as the RE2 remake. They'd have had to completely reimagine RE3 and make it a completely different game for it to match RE2, and a remake was never going to do that. The remake sounds like it's a good game, just like the original RE3 was, just not as good as RE2, which the original RE3 never was. to Does that help at all? :p

Random aside: it's interesting that the original RE3's full title was always Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, but for the remake, they've dropped the subtitle and it is just Resident Evil 3. The original RE3's origins as a side RE project has been completely dropped at this point, and it now has officially become a proper numbered entry in the series. I think it's good enough to deserve that, at least.

What would you say made RE3 lesser? I saw some conversations on Reset like that but the conversation between these users are, like, whether or not RE3 was simply great and what its critical acclaim is and not RE3 itself. :p

Aww, a shame to hear it's not as good as 2, but not surprising. I'm still looking forward to it, though! Even trying out the multiplayer. I hope Capcom is able to learn some lessons from this game's apparent drawbacks. I figured it wouldn't be terribly long given how close to RE2 it was, maybe they should've used that as an excuse to lower the price a bit and set expectations appropriately, although I assume they were hoping the multiplayer would make up for it.

I added more to my other post as well. :)

RE3, to me, is still a good game, just to be clear. It's "lesser" than RE1/RE2 for a few reasons: it doesn't have multiple path playthroughs (RE1 and RE2 had different characters with different stories/run-throughs whereas RE3 doesn't), it's much more action-oriented and less of a survival horror game - meaning ammo is more plentiful, your characters are more powerful, and the game is simply less hard (even with Nemesis). It's also a much more straightforward game: less puzzles and a more direct and linear path to beat the game. And one thing people liked a lot about RE1/RE2 (though I care less about this) were all the reasons to keep coming back due to the multiple character angles but here, once you beat it once, that's it, it's over and there's no real reason to return back to the game. Additionally, with a dodge ability and an invincible knife this time around (just like the original RE3), the game is simply easier, and that also makes it less "horror" which is what people like about RE.

But don't get me wrong - it's a very fun and good game - I look forward to the remake! But I think people expecting RE2 again in terms of "classic" level status will be disappointed, just as gamers back in the day were disappointed that RE3 wasn't as good as RE1/RE2. It's interesting reliving the same exact thing twice with gamers. I actually appreciate that RE3 is a bit different than RE1/RE2, because we already got two games that did it that way. :p

I actually think a remake of RE0 would be very interesting, since it's much more similar to RE1/RE2 than it is like RE3 or RE4.

This makes a lot of sense! I thought the knife was invincible because it was the demo. So there was a lot of the original that carried over to this. There's no second run option or anything I'm assuming?

Yeah, like RE2 a lot carried over from the original. There's no second run option or anything (as I recall) as you play as just one character throughout (Jill), with the exception of two extended sections where you play as Carlos. You do unlock new costumes and skins, and there are multiple difficulty settings, but yeah, it's not like RE1 and RE2 in that way. :)

I think this is why they added the multiplayer game to RE3 in order to give it more value as a result. Originally the multiplayer game was supposed to be its own game but has now been added on to the RE3 remake.

Some impressions of Nemesis itself indicate he remains a series of intense scripted encounters instead of a progression of the Mr X constant pursuer thing. If true it feels like a missed opportunity to me.  Based on the demo I'd guess the finished game will meet expectations of being as fun and thrilling as you'd expect from any RE, but some reviews and message board posts now have me intrigued to see how much content was scrapped from the original and how Nemesis will be implemented.

What was Code Veronica's story, even? I only remember three parts - arriving on an island, the cross dressing brother, and some dude staring at Claire's ass when they were about to escape some giant spider and said dude wrecking whatever machine to escape with by staring at said cheeks...

Honestly? I expected it to not have multiple areas and enemies fully cut. They cut the clocktower, the park, according to several reviews what we got to explore of the city in the demo is almost the entirety of it.

What I meant to say is the optimistic side of me expected this remake to kind of flesh out and bring home the promise that RE3 always had. It's a bit of a diamond in the rough I think and I've beaten it about four times total. Now that expectation was definitely too much, especially considering RE2R didn't do that either, it was pretty straight forward. I did however think that could've been entirely possible considering the seemingly longer dev time and being released a year after RE2R, I basically assumed they had time to 'play around' more with RE2R as the established foundation I suppose. That would've been my ideal scenario.

What I didn't expect was for them to literally cut out several, if you're a fan of the game, iconic locations in a game already light on unique locations. I mean they apparently substituted these with...a sewer level. We just played that in RE2R and I would assume the reason could be to save on resources having to build those entire new areas and instead asset reuse the most boring of all video game settings, a sewer level. Basically what I'm saying is for me personally, it's basically not even the bare minimum I expected from a remake. And again, like in RE2R, which already annoyed me there despite really liking the game, there are cut enemies and encounters.

Add to that the downgraded gore/dismemberment from RE2R (I assume due to more zombies on screen etc.), the clunky dodge mechanic and, by some accounts, first playthrough time of 5-1/2 to 6 hours specifically combined with the lack of the classic-as-hell Mercenaries mode and this one not having the A/B scenarios of RE2R to pad things out no matter how light that was already in that remake, it's just pretty disappointing to me. I really like RE3, like I said I've beaten it quite a few times over the years and always thoroughly enjoyed it despite the many flaws, so I was hoping it'd kind of get a real chance to shine here and be more like a real sequel to RE2R which seemed highly plausible in early footage. Also, I'm not trying to act like it's a shitty game, it won't be, it'll still probably be a 7/10 type deal for me no matter what, it's just disappointing they couldn't knock this one out of the park with RE2R having been such an amazing template to hit perfection with a sequel.

That's all accurate and fair for sure, I think you just demand too much out of your entertainment sometimes - I see that with your taste in movies, etc. in that you get critical and exasperated quickly (not a bad thing, just an observation). People are only human - this was only ever going to be so good. I think we should be happy with what is, by all accounts, a great remake. I mean, yeah, cutting the clocktower sucks, but the park always sucked and so did the worm boss so I'm not really upset that's gone. :p

I'm still getting it this Friday, but I'm glad I have an expectation now. I was expecting second runs and something like Mr. X who follows you through an entire area (might be harder using a city, though), so at least I won't play and wonder what's going on.

I enjoyed the demo.

By the time the original RE3 had come out, I had burned out on the franchise due to repeated playthroughs of the first two games, so I never finished the original RE3; I got about halfway through and put it down.

I may pick this up.
