400Mhz Pentium II (with MMX), 128 MB SDRam, 13GB hard drive, 56K external modem, and Sounblaster Pro. Rocking dual iomega ZIP Drives and a SNAPPY jacked into my parallel port for full frame 640x480 video image capture.

But I only use that one for my graphics work. My regular PC is a piece of shit.

i5 6600K

980 Ti

16GB RAM

1TB SSD

Seiki SM40UNP monitor (39" 4k60)

As soon as I can find an ideal monitor, I think I'll upgrade the whole kit. I really want something 4k around 40" with variable refresh rates and better colors. I really like the single large monitor, and I very much prefer the 39" to the ultrawides out there. They're similar widths, but they lack the height, which is really wonderful to work with.

i7 4790k

Nvidia 970 3.5 GB (Fuck you still Nvidia)

16GB

140GB SSD

I built it for the Witcher 3 so I don’t regret it but I was extremely annoyed about the gimped vram on the 970. I ended up converting it to a HTPC.  My wife asks the “what’s that box for again?” question every 6 months or so. I think she wants it gone from the living room. I won’t allow my salt to be washed away so I keep it even though I rarely use it at this point outside the occasional Civilization game I play.

Please explain the difference between i5 and i7. Recently purchased the Microsoft 3 laptop with i5

The final question is do you really need an Intel Core i7 or can you make do with and i5? It depends on what you’re going to be doing with your computer. For one, i7s are more expensive, and this can limit which graphics cards and other components you can buy. If you’re going to be doing a lot of video editing and/or you’re going to be streaming your gameplay on Twitch or YouTube, the Hyper-Threading abilities of an i7 could be worth it.

For most PC gamers however, an i5 is the better choice. Most games don’t make use of the Hyper-Threading technology, so there’s no point to it. Also, for most games an i5 will not bottleneck your gaming performance. Simply put, with an Intel Core i5 and an Nvidia GTX 980Ti, the processor will not be the component that holds back your frame rate.

Laptop CPUs are branded differently than desktop ones.  In the current mobile world, usually both i5s and i7s have Hyperthreading.  i7 CPUs can come with a (much) higher Turbo Boost frequency, possibly a better integrated GPU, and depending on the specific model perhaps more cores.  Sometimes an i5 will not have a Turbo Boost frequency at all, but lately Intel has given that feature i5 processors.

This is something I didn't even think about.
