I read this essay by Ray Carney about the state of film criticism in the industry and it completely changed my outlook on how films are critiqued today. I haven't looked back since. He was very harsh on a lot of films that I and loved but I couldn't argue with his assessment of modern film criticism. I've seen it twice since and it felt more natural knowing that it's going that way later. It's definitely flawed but I still think it's a great movie. I unfortunately watched that movie when my marriage was starting to slowly go down the drain and it's still one of the most awful reactions I've had to a movie. Well, I don't think he was at a time in his life where it would impact him as much, and he's a hard one to crack. I thought it was sad but I wasn't moved as much. I love the Guardians movies but are they really an accurate representation of the MCU as a whole? Both movies, Guardians 2 in particular, have always felt like outliers to me. James Gunn elevates the meaningless MCU format into something that is thoughtful and has something to say about our familial relationships.
