Scorsese on Marvel movies: "That's not cinema" "Theme park ride" EDIT: Coppola says Marvel movies "despicable" "same movie over and over again"

You know, someone should point out to Scorsese that if you guest star on an episode of Entourage, you don’t get to bitch about “cinema”.

I’m sure this made more sense in your head :p

@skillzdadirecta What do you think of Leonard Maltin? I used to watch his reviews on Stars.

I remember him... he never really stood out to me. I really stopped paying attention to reviewers as a whole in college. I read this essay by Ray Carney about the state of film criticism in the industry and it completely changed my outlook on how films are critiqued today. I haven't looked back since. He was very harsh on a lot of films that I and loved but I couldn't argue with his assessment of modern film criticism. I generally just go by my own interest or word from people that I know when it comes to films and what to see. Works for me

Someone should point out to you that Scorsese can do whatever he wants and then "bitch" about "cinema" because he's fucking MARTIN SCORSESE.

Blade Runner 2049

is one of the best movies I have ever seen and it made me really like Ryan Gosling as this was the first thing I had seen him in and then went on to watch like 4-5 movies that star him. However, I hate the first blade runner. Fuckin trash.

I really fucking like The Place Beyond The Pines if you haven't seen that yet. Granted, it's not a Ryan Gosling "vehicle" but I think he's extremely memorable in that and it's just a great, albeit pretty oddly structured, movie.

I liked it until the teens showed up.

That was my impression the first time I saw it. I've seen it twice since and it felt more natural knowing that it's going that way later. It's definitely flawed but I still think it's a great movie. Anyway just meant to recommend since Gosling is fucking good in that, cool you've seen it though.

That movie is great and is directed by the guy who did Blue Valentine, an even better Ryan Gosling film.

I unfortunately watched that movie when my marriage was starting to slowly go down the drain and it's still one of the most awful reactions I've had to a movie. It's objectively a great one but I'm never watching that again, damn!

That’s the movie that made me a Mahershala Ali fan. His part is great.

I remember getting my friend and his g/f to go with me. I kept hyping it up since it was billed by some people as the saddest movie in ages, and the day of, he was like, "This better be the most motherfucking depressing thing I've ever seen or you owe me a movie ticket."

His g/f was wiping away tears at the end, but he demanded that I owed him. :p

I would say it's more too fucking real rather than just depressing. There are many aspects that, in some way or another, I think many people have experienced in a relationship that I had never seen so bluntly and eloquently represented on screen. Maybe in Eternal Sunshine... and Annie Hall on second thought but yeah.

It's definitely not depressing in a sensationalistic fashion, so maybe he won the bet in that regard!

Well, I don't think he was at a time in his life where it would impact him as much, and he's a hard one to crack. I thought it was sad but I wasn't moved as much. We were both in college, and the whole thing of, "A relationship dissolves for no real reason," wasn't as much a relatable concept, I guess?

Good point. Basically nothing was relatable nor emotional to me in my 20s.

You're on fire with the gifs today :p

If you guys like Blue Valentine then you must be chomping at the bit for THIS movie

God no, even the word marriage makes me shiver and recoil these days!

I can't stay away from those stupid gifs. Every since the gif button was introduced I realized my words are inferior to funny images from movies. Pure boomer.

All respect to two giants of cinema but I never cried for a Scorsese or Coppola film like I cry for GOTG 2.

I love the Guardians movies but are they really an accurate representation of the MCU as a whole? Both movies, Guardians 2 in particular, have always felt like outliers to me. James Gunn elevates the meaningless MCU format into something that is thoughtful and has something to say about our familial relationships. It has the emotional weight that almost all of the other movies sorely lack.

This is a really good essay on the whole Marvel-Scorsese thing. In particular this last line:

To these poor souls I recommend carving out a few hours of the waning decade for a movie called The Irishman, in which a guy commits for life to an institution that doesn’t care about him at all, and realizes too late that he’s absolutely powerless.
