I feel like this marks the end of a 3 year+ saga. This is the climax, and beyond this, nothing else is going to be done against him. So at this point I feel like just tuning out of politics until it's time for me to vote.

Until he gets reelected in 2020, then declares a national emergency to keep himself president until he dies.

Regardless of how left of center you are, and I say this as a pacifist for the most part (mainly since i can't fight well in person), this entire honkfuck administration should be provoking the "decapitate the one percent in the revolution" leftist energy in anyone with a pulse. Long time coming. Fuck outta here already.

So now Pelosi is considering not handing over the impeachment to the Senate unless they agree to play fair, and McConnell's response is to consider just not recognizing the House's impeachment at all?

It's hard to even predict what crazy decisions SCOTUS is going to have to make by the end of this.

I don't know how the process works but how does this actually affect his political career going forward? From what I understand, the chance of actual removals are probably nonexistent so...what are the repercussions here? Anything?

He isn’t getting removed, but there simply isn’t enough data one way or the other to say what the political effects of the impeachment. Anybody who says different is just making things up.

It's best not to expect anything more.

Some in the GOP are even arguing that they can run for a third term because of the "coup" attempt made against them!

Is this an actual thing, because it sounds like another Huckabee joke.

No, there are a few who have argued that somehow trying to remove a president gives them another term. I've only heard it said from a few crazies, fortunately. But with the way Trump jokes about it...

Like who?

I googled it and found this, which I also remember reading. It's not a GOP person in this case, just a nutjob "constitutional expert."

Quote

The ill-considered impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump have seriously interfered with his first term as president. Thus, argues constitutional scholar William Mattox in The Wall Street Journal, if acquitted, Trump should be eligible for a third term, notwithstanding the two-term limit in the 22nd Amendment.

Mattox deploys a sports analogy: “In the National Football League, teams can challenge a call on the field — but there’s a risk. If instant replay doesn’t merit overturning the call, the challenging team loses one of its three timeouts. That discourages frivolous challenges and keeps the game flowing, while also providing a way to reverse egregious errors.”

The argument is that since impeachment has taken up his time, he should be given more time.

Imagine being a Constitutional scholar and citing a 20-year old rule in the NFL as basis for how presidential terms should be understood.

That guy says he should be eligible, not that he is, and explicitly says you would need to amend the constitution to do so :p

His voter base will simply see this as a badge of honor in their lowest-common-denominator blind American contrarianism and probably vote even stronger for the badass who's too real for the libtard system to handle, that's about all I expect to come from this personally. But like I said, I don't really know the process so I was curious what people here thought. Makes sense seeing how few times it actually has occurred but great twist in the never-ending soap opera script that is American politics in general.

I think the impeachment is likely pleasing for different reasons to both those who support and oppose the president. What is less certain is the people who have no strong opinion about him. That’s what makes it difficult to predict the outcome with such a small data set on impeachment effects.

I read a compelling argument that the narcissist authoritan needs to have his "wound" "healed" by impeachment going down in the Senate. There will be huge pressure from trump to get impeachment into the Senate. He's going to go fucking nuts demanding McConnell take the articles and acquit him.
