Is it me, or is it a pretty weak field this year?

I haven't played Sekiro, so I guess my pick for GOTY would be Control.

Also, all the mentions of Outer Worlds should go to Outer Wilds.

I feel like there's been a good stream of solid games this year, but nothing really stood out as the game. Although there are a few big titles I haven't touched yet.

Yes this has been a weak year to be honest with all of the delays. The three games I enjoyed the most have been Jedi Fallen Order, Control and Remnant. Outside of those games I played Days Gone and Outer Worlds along with Sekiro. Other than those I've been playing my backlog mostly,

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are people out there that enjoy the hell out of it. I haven't personally played it, but I am curious how one of the most divisive love it/hate it games of the year can even be in this category. Surely there had to be ONE other game out there that deserve to be in there.

Keighly swinging on Kojima's nuts for the past few years, and now a (according to others) mediocre game is nominated for GotY? Seems fishy, and kinda tarnishes the legitimacy of the show, imo.

This has been a weird year. With the exception of Control there haven't been many interesting games in the AAA field. The two standouts for me this year are Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium, which are both startlingly original and well executed games the likes of which you rarely see twice in one year.

The Outer Worlds better not win a damn thing. The whole GOTY list is pathetic. Smash is really the only real option IMO. Sekiro was good, but not GOTY good. RE2make was good, but there is just so little content and it does something things worse than in the RE2.

Death Stranding's nomination raises questions....

Quote

The Games Awards is the largest video games awards ceremony of the year in large part because it’s full of new game announcements, but the industry takes the awards seriously as well. This year, with Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding nominated for a number of awards including Game of the Year, viewers are openly wondering whether or not that’s related to The Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley’s very public relationship with Kojima. Keighley says he doesn’t nominate or vote on awards, but there are plenty of questions here.

Death Stranding released earlier this month to a split critical reception. I loved it. In my review for Kotaku, I called it a “fantastic mess.” Meanwhile, IGN gave the game a 6.8 out of 10. It’s a divisive game with plenty of detractors among the broader gaming audience. But it’s also a high budget game made by one of the world’s most well-known directors, which would typically prime it for awards season. Sure enough, it has received nine nominations this year including Game of the Year and Best Game Direction. These nominations, received so soon after release, have drawn some attention as show producer Geoff Keighley has been a friend of Kojima’s for years, talking about him on Twitter and bringing him on stage at various events, including previous iterations of The Game Awards. Keighley even appears as a non-player character in Death Stranding.

This appearance of impropriety has led to questions from critics and fans. In a large thread on the popular message board ResetEra asking whether it was appropriate for Death Stranding to rack up so many awards, conversations got heated. Keighley also spent some time on Twitter explaining to questioners that he did not himself vote on the awards.

The person who wrote this article LOVES the game btw.

That's the thing, though. If it got a few nominations I doubt anybody would care. However, it may as well be the greatest game ever made, considering it was nominated in every category it was eligible for.
