Is "the American" mentioned in the stinger supposed to give us hope that Hopper is alive? Or is it somebody else I'm not thinking of?

well they never actually showed him get disintegrated so this would be the first thought

Spoiler

At the start of the season, they show the Russian scientists getting turned into a pile of goo when the machine malfunctions, and there's no pile of Hopper goo after the machine explodes.

Watched the first 5 episodes so far.  Definitely better than S2.  Some little things make me roll my eyes a little but not bad.  Some of the kid actors are growing up quick.  I think the one episode had a flashback of Will in season 2 and there was a bigger difference than i thought.

I enjoyed it overall. It's not great, but it's good corny fun.

Spoiler

ending spoilers

I liked that Eleven was basically RotJ Luke, confident and capable in her powers, which made the final episode a bit of a bummer. Yes, you have to give the non-powered people stuff to do (blow up the death star / close the gate), but you can also give us the fantasy showdown. We got a whole season of her using her powers all the time, but she only briefly faced the monster at the cabin, only to be a non-factor in the final battle.

Spoiler

She had to lose her powers so that she couldn't instantly go mind-searching for Hopper.

Spoiler

I'm fine with her losing her powers at the end. It allows potential opportunities for next season as well as preserving the Hopper mystery, but I'd personally have liked to see her lose them after fighting the big bad. We see her with this new control over her abilities for the whole season, and then when she's finally up against something truly terrible, she's removed from the equation. It's not a big deal, and I can see the argument that it made the fight at the mall more interesting overall, but it also felt like we didn't get a payoff that the show had been building up to for a while.

Spoiler

That wasn't the actual "Big Bad" though... the Mind Flayer is still in the upside down. That thing was basically just a weapon to overwhelm Eleven. There's still room for a showdown later when the actual Mind Flayer makes it into the real world.

Only two episodes in and I have a question. What time period is this supposed to take place in? I don't feel like they are giving us any clues...

The mid 80s, pretty sure 85.

Spoiler

Back to the Future (1) came out in theaters on July 3rd 1985) and on the 4th they snuck into the movie.

I was attempting to be funny. I feel like they've turned the "EVERYTHING 80s!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!!" slider up like 100% higher for each season.

This show is basically showing me my childhood, but I still think they take it too far. You can set something in a certain time period without beating your audience over the head with a hammer about it every 10 seconds. It's a little too on-the-nose.

I'm only 2 episodes in, and it does feel a little stronger than season 2, but I still feel like they gotten way too far away from what made season 1 so special.

The first one felt like a small loving homage to the 80s and 80s movies. Now it almost feels like a parody of 80s movies or something.

I dunno, the line-for-line Die Hard quoting made me lol pretty hard :p

I haven't started it yet but this kind of thing tends to annoy the shit out of me. Season 2 felt superfluous and forgettable to me overall so I hope between this and my already non-existent hype, I'll still get some enjoyment out of it.

I don't even know if S2 was objectively even bad or that boring but it sure was an incredibly forgettable wet fart for me after S1 basically firing on all cylinders. I actually don't even remember what the hell happened in it necessarily.

Season 2 felt like a bloated unnecessary sequel to a movie you love... so in that way, they really did nail the whole 80s thing...

It wasn't that bad overall... but I don't feel like they nailed the tone or subtlety of season 1. They just went to a white board, wrote down all the things that people seemed to like about season 1, figured out a way to do all those things again, only bigger and louder and then shoehorned a story around that.

I don’t understand the hate for season 2. This show is amazing. There’s really nothing else quite like it right now, and they’re doing an incredible job balancing all the genres into one.

I liked season 2. 1>3>2

May I ask what you thought was subtle about season 1? I don’t think that’s an adjective I’d use to describe any part of the show.

To wit...

I think season 1 is EASILY the most “holy shit the 80’s” season out of the three, by a huge margin.

Maybe I need to rewatch it, but I don't remember it that way at all. I watched season 1 and 2 back to back and noticed a big difference in how they handled all the 80s retro stuff.

It felt like they were trying to hard to shoehorn in as many references as possible. Season 3 feels worse in that department, but it's been a while.

Whatever. I'm just being a stick in the mud. I do enjoy this show quite a bit...

I really enjoyed season 3. I just finished it last night. I can say I started off looking close at the references to make sure they fit in 1985. They did good for the most part. I may have missed some.

Also the show looks so good in 4k with Dolby Vision.

Just finished the show today. Episode 8 was basically perfection in TV form.  I liked season 2 but like many others felt that it lost a bit of its magic. Season 3 got it back in spades. The kids got to play off each other again and literally every single side character they’ve introduced is a home run addition to the show.

when was the Die Hard quoting? I missed it.

When Hopper was in that basement and had his gun against the Russian guy's head. It was line-for-line from Die Hard where McClane had the gun against the first guy he kills ("Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho").

"You won't shoot me"

"Why's that?"

"You're a policeman. Policeman have rules"

Also, that Russian guy who came off like a super-soldier was basically Arnold's character from the Terminator without being a machine. :p

Ahhh damn I can’t believe I missed that. And I LOVED that they basically made that dude the Terminator 😂

This show manages to balance serious/heavy and fun better than any I can remember.

A lot of people missed this... I've seen official Easter Egg lists that missed this scene. It jumped out to me as soon as it happened :p

It clicked for me as an 80’s trope but I completely missed that it was straight from Die Hard haha

The Mayor calls him Schwarzenegger when Hopper is beating him up.
