Says the person who just watched Cocktail for the first time recently.

Those two movies aren't even close to being on the same level.

It's like comparing someone who had never seen Slap Shot to someone who had never seen The Color of Money.

Science should research how you've gone your whole life without having seen Top Gun.

Top gun may be the only big 1980s movie that I’ve not only never seen, but nobody around me has ever felt like talking about it besides one person at my current job.

I have seen none of those movies.

Of course it’s a little more surprising to hear that someone hasn’t seen Top Gun than it is to hear that they haven’t seen Cocktail, but Cocktail was still a pretty big movie back in the 80s when it came out just like most Tom Cruise movies were back in the 80s and 90s. It was fairly popular, and I guess that I just expect anyone who likes Tom Cruise to have seen it.

The original is on Netflix FYI. I remember seeing it as a kid and for about a week I wanted to join the airforce afterwards :p

It’s one of those movies that’s been referenced so many times, in so many contexts, I feel like I’ve already seen it. So by this point, I’m curious to see if I can enjoy this decades-later sequel armed with only what I’ve absorbed through cultural osmosis. I did that with Creed (that was my first “Rocky” movie), and I still understood probably 90% of the references, and I completely loved the movie.

I grew up in the 80s, so that’s part of why I’m a big fan of 80s movies and music. I know that a lot of you are younger, so I can understand why 80s stuff wouldn’t have the same appeal to you. I admittedly haven’t watched a lot of 80s movies in a while, so it’s likely that I would find many of them to be cheesy now. Or maybe I would still like them due to nostalgia. Who knows?

Don’t worry @SuperSpreader I too haven’t seen Top Gun or Cocktail. I have heard the soundtrack for Cocktail on repeat from my sisters room years and years ago. So no desire really to see it, but I have at least I’ve tried to watch Top Gun. Receiver crapped out on me 1st attempt and yesterday (to watch out of boredom) it was listed on CBS. I also get the Buffalo feed and they sadly were covering the shooting instead.

Legend >>>>>>> Cocktail

Cocktail is just bad, it's popularity has always been baffling.

Yeah I dunno why people like Cocktail - it's not rated well either, so it's popularity is strange. Also, yes, Legend is great, and way better than Cocktail.

And Days of Thunder is better than both Cocktail and Top Gun!

Agreed, though Days of Thunder is basically Top Gun but for racing instead of jets. :p

It’s bad IYO, and that’s fine. I often find the popularity of a lot of things to be baffling, I rarely share the majority opinion on things.

That's LITERALLY what Days of Thunder is. It was even reviewed as such back when it came out. I like Days of Thunder but it doesn't hold a candle to Top Gun. Tony Scot basically repeated himself with it almost beat for beat. What's interesting is how influential both movies were on gaming particularly Sega. Top Gun definitely inspired After Burner and Days of Thunder pretty much led to Daytona USA. Both Sega arcade hits that pushed their home consoles.

Sign me up for "Cocktail sucks". I like literally every other one of the 80s Cruise movies mentioned here more.

Also, I haven't followed Maverick at all and just assumed it was some shitty cash grab I guess because I cannot believe how damn good the reviews are, jesus.

Joseph Kosinki directed it and he made the underrated Tom Cruise movie Oblivion. I remember Cruise was really impressed with him. I've heard it's good from folks who've seen it, but supposedly it's 75 to 80% close ups. I wonder if it has anything to do with scheduling or Covid.
