I've bashed DOOM so vigorously that I need to publicly announce that I was wrong

I don't know what came over me after years of hating it, but I just bought DOOM Reboot for PS4 in some PSN flash sale because I just really wanted a shooter and well, it was cheap.

It's...pretty fucking fun and addictive once I let go of it not being the Doom reboot I personally wanted and had been waiting for. It seriously pissed me off that I had been waiting something like 12 years for this when it was first released but with some distance, well, it's a really fun game overall. I still have my issues with quite a few aspects but again, I'm really hooked on it right now and really enjoying myself.

It's what DOOM needed to be in 2016 to even be considered somewhat relevant.

I don't agree. I think it could've gone a totally different route, more like where Playstation Doom left off if you ever played that version. It went for a much darker version of Doom with its soundtrack, lighting and much heavier use of darkness. Many modders, and even John Romero, embraced this "style" subsequently.

In my opinion, they could've doubled down on these elements and with modern graphics could've really pushed that H.R. Giger art influence and done something really dark and intense with the atmosphere without sacrificing the gameplay style they went with here. This could've very easily been sold to a modern audience just the same I think.

Doom's original art most definitely went for horror, atmosphere and a sense of realism but was obviously thwarted by its technical limitations. Doom was fucking scary when it came out, at least to everyone I knew that played it, so I was hoping to see that fully brought out one day. I think it's a really fun game gameplay-wise but just think the aesthetics are all over the place. Some enemies look like Gears Of War's style, some have a goofy cartoonish style, the Cyberdemon looks like a moose fucked a giant crab, the hell environments are sillier and more cartoony than Mars...it just doesn't make much sense to me and is a big reason why I refused to give it a proper chance for so long.

I pay a lot, probably too much, attention to aesthetics in games so hence my frustration with this game initially.

You didn't need to make a thread... we all knew you were wrong :p

He was the one who kept telling me to play it at the time. He was right. I played Doom and Titanfall 2's campaigns back to back at the end of 2016. Great times.

I’ve been saying it since I got about halfway through the game - it’s the best FPS campaign in years, and possibly ever. It’s certainly my favorite ever and (and I hate this qualifier because people use it for EVERYTHING) it’s not close.

It’s pure fun, and the sequel looks to be expanding in amazing ways.

And yeah mouse and keyboard feels incredible for this game.

Been meaning to get back into it on my vacation but I’m nearly done with Skyrim finally so I keep powering through that.

Doom was great but I have a bad feeling Doom Eternal will just be more of the same which won’t be terrible but it won’t be great either

By the way, if you guys wanna buy me a gaming PC, PM for my mailing address, no problem!

Alas, I don't have the money nor time to invest in such a venture. I don't have a computer at all right now unless my phone counts :/

Edit: The only thing I hate so far control-wise is the weapon wheel. It doesn't react nearly as quickly as my inputs and I often find myself getting screwed because of it. The hot switch thing on R1 is cool to switch between two "favorites" so I often go for the Plasma Gun stun to Double Barrel blast combo but the wheel...no.

I wasn't 100% wrong because I still think it's a train wreck aesthetically. I also think the sound design is exceptionally crappy but neither can be held against its fun ass gameplay which I definitely was wrong about.

Well apparently since you're playing with a controller you're doing it wrong... there's simply no way you're having as much fun as you claim to be having. Get a P.C. noob!

Back on topic, The weapon wheel worked like crap for me on Wolfenstein as well.

Speaking of Wolfenstein, that fucked up sound mix has to be a Bethesda thing and not id per say. I've noticed the same with Arkane's games and several others under Bethesda. There's severe compression and limiting thrown over the entire mix in those games and it sounds like a wet blanket over your speakers, it's a mess.

I'm broke!!! I can't afford that sweet master race shit!!!!

I'm playing on a soundbar with rear speakers and a sub. Sounds really good for basically anything else. I've tried all kinds of EQ settings, tried my trusty headphones and it always has that going on. I've noticed this with other Bethesda games as well though over time.

Lol I think you're the first person I've ever seen that preferred the Doom 3 aesthetic.

Doom has always been stupid, gory, over-the-top, fast paced shooter, so a lot of people took issue with 3 going slower and more serious.

Not saying it's bad, but the 2016 reboot was a return to form.

I didn't say it was wrong, I just said it was a lesser experience (it absolutely is). Doom is a fast paced power trip with super tight gameplay and a ton of maneuverability. By default that type of gameplay is better suited to K/M.

Kadingir Sanctum is probably one of the best examples in the game where even a half-way decent player - let alone an expert - can go absolutely fucking ham. You simply cannot do this kind of fast paced, insane gameplay on a gamepad. I mean, look at the fucking Doom Eternal E3 demo that was clearly played with a gamepad.  It looks absolutely sluggish by comparison, and that was a professional demo trying to show the game off!

OK, yeah, you CAN play like this with Mouse and Keyboard, but no one on their first play through is going to be playing like that. I don't mean playing with no hud either. Like, you can't do that on console, but the majority of people who played DOOM 2016 probably can't play like that either, nor will they. The guy in your video was very impressive, but the only way you are gonna play like that is with practice. So, while it is impossible to play like that on console, most people still can't on PC.

This is about what it really looks like for most people who play on PC:

Doom is the only AAA single player FPS that I can think of that was significantly improved with M/K controls. By the end of the game on Ultra-Violence every enemy with the occasional exception of the Barons of Hell were just walking healthpacks. I really wish that there was a difficulty setting that maintained the AI damage and behavior of Ultra-Violence but was jam packed with more demons.

All FPSs are significantly better with KB/M.  Because Doom is paced more like a pre-Halo/CoD4 shooter (i.e. it is faster like a traditional KB/M shooter), it benefits even more.  I'm playing Far Cry 5 right now -- and the KB/M makes it significantly easier to make headshots.

Where are you getting Doom 3 from specifically anyway? I didn't even mention that game. The gameplay and level design was terrible and one of the worst gaming letdowns I experienced when it finally came out so I think Doom 2016 is way better in that department. You're mixing all kinds of things into that post.

I don't even think it's aesthetically better than 2016, it's bad as well, just not as bad to me.

And Doom was never stupid. There's a reason it has such amazing longevity and is so revered, the gameplay, level design and everything else was like a finely tuned clockwork and masterclass in design. There are all kinds of subtle elements at play in its design like the color-coding of enemies telling you at the drop of a hat which gun to pull out and on and on. There's a great video about this on YouTube, forgot who made it.

You said the Doom that was on Playstation that was darker in terms of design (lighting, music, art, etc.) so I thought you meant Doom 3. Guess there's another Doom I don't know about.

I didn't mean stupid as a pejorative, I meant it as a style choice, like it doesn't take itself too seriously, or how some movies are purposely stupid fun (like Ace Ventura, or that new Hobbs and Shaw movie coming out).

Here's an example of what I was referring to. Doom PSX had much different and darker lighting, different sound design including heavy emphasis on reverbs and echos and most notably a very atmospheric and dark soundtrack. It kind of transformed the game into a much different experience while obviously keeping the frantic gameplay in tact.

A lot of what I'm saying is based on my nostalgia and utter love for this version of course but it was definitely heavily embraced by future modders and even Romero himself as a definite version of Doom aesthetically. Technically it's inferior in some ways, most notably the framerate, but it's still my personal preferred version of Doom and my favorite game of all time probably.

I gotcha regarding the "stupid" comment, my bad.

Doing some of the later Rune Trials now feels nearly impossible with a gamepad actually so I get the comments. I generally try to beat them all right away but had to give up on two so far, just can't fucking get agile enough.

I know I can obviously practice and get it down but I really hate that timer and load time for a new try and that's actually what ends up frustrating the piss out of me.

I like Doom 3 more than Doom 2016 because I'm not really into pure arcade-y twitch shooters these days. When I was a lot younger (teens/20s) I liked fast paced non-stop action games that offered no real reason for what you were doing in them, but these days I prefer games with stories, character development, adventure and RPG elements.
