The GOP lost control of the senate because of a defector, but yeah, the notion that the GOP got wrecked as a result of the failed impeachment trial is dubious.

Man, if only Republicans lost dearly. Modest losses in the 1998 midterms, a 2000 presidential win (and Bush campaigned on being some moralist, restoring dignity to the White House as he called it), 2002 midterm wins, 2004 presidential and Congressional wins.

Republicans ain't never wanna repeat that.

The 1998 midterm elections which were the closest in proximity to the entire impeachment situation showed no discernible impact from it as the GOP retained control of both houses of Congress.

Gonna quibble even though I agree with the gist: the fact that they didn't make gains in a midterm under an opposing president was an impact. It just didn't really change the calculus in Washington.

Trump feels more like a Krusty to me, well in this situation. Although Krusty realized he said something wrong unlike Trump who doubles down and goes for broke

This motherfucker could build himself a wig sweatshop full of starving African children into the Oval Office using CIA agents as carpenters and there'd be a collective "oh well, it's cuuhhhrazy Donnie guys" shrug.

Nobody actually cares.

Fox and CNN would both broadcast it live as a motivational story.

Sometimes I wonder if Xi is sufficiently annoyed with the tariff nonsense that he'd work against Trump. Putin is easily getting his money's worth, but I don't know if Xi is quite as happy. Then again, maybe Xi would probably take the tariffs in exchange for an incompetent running the US every day of the week.

I don't really think this Senate will vote to convict,  but I do think that not initiating impeachment is a great way to disillusion Democrats and independents into staying home in 2020, while impeaching WOULD fire up turnout.

Independents and Democrats who stay home in 2020 because Democrats didn’t initiate impeachment proceedings in 2019 should be flayed.

This isn't up for debate. The House has a constitutional legal duty to begin impeachment proceedings. It is the law to do so when sufficient enough evidence has presented itself, which it has. To not do so is negligence of a legal duty, and thus they should all be flayed or forced to begin impeachment proceedings.

Whether there is an election coming up at some point shouldn't even enter into the calculus at this point, unless they simply want to time the beginning of impeachment proceedings at just the right time (which is a possibility).

Congressional Democrats should be flayed for ignoring their base because they're concerned about pissing off voters who aren't voting for them regardless.

Okay, but seriously, Democrats need to have a message that isn't just "who else are you gonna vote for, the Republicans?" It's insanely obvious they take their base for granted and it shouldn't be a shock when the base reacts poorly to that.

Even some on the right are chastising him for this. Which makes me think my first instinct on this is probably right.

Trump will do some token walk back of this(sounds like his press office already has) and the right will sing his praises. Like his "I meant to say wouldn't instead of would" nonsense in Helsinki.

But this is like the Guiliani in Ukraine thing. Even if he attempts a walk back, he has signalled every foreign power he is open for business. This is basically the "Russia if you're listening...." of Trump's second term.

And the best part is that when he wins and more interference is revealed, he'll point back to this quote and say "America knew this was going to happen when they elected me" thus legitimizing it just like hiding his tax returns.

She will be fired within 2 hours by Trump.*

*By Trump I mean she will be fired by Trump's (Acting) Chief of Staff.  Subsequently, the (Acting) Chief of Staff will also become the (Acting) FEC chairman.

I will continue to have no issue with this, if real dirt exist expose it, why care about the source. If it was dirt on Trump, the people against this would licking the Kool - Aid off the floor.

Starving when they come in but then get fed, or do they continue to starve? That makes a difference. :p
