Former police officer convicted of murder for shooting unarmed black teen

A former police officer was found guilty of murder Tuesday for the April 2017 shooting death of an African American teenager and could face up to life in prison.  Roy Oliver, who is white, had testified he was defending his partner when he shot into a car leaving a house party in the Dallas suburb of Balch Springs. Fifteen-year-old Jordan Edwards, a freshman honor roll student who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was killed instantly.

I literally cried when I saw the newsflash. It’s a start.

This is horrifying. And only a police officer, even off duty, would be able to do this and not be arrested on the scene. So angry.

Also turns out the guy graduated from the same small Christian university (Harding in Arkansas) a couple of my younger cousins also graduated from. They weren’t close, but shared a lot of friends. Everybody is devastated because he was apparently a really great guy. Sad day.

She will not be charged, and the reasoning will be that she was in uniform, and so if she told him to lay down or back up and he failed to immediately comply, then she could have felt in danger for her life and was therefore justified in shooting him.

An arrest warrant has been issued, just came way late given the circumstances of the shooting.

The shooting lacks all common sense. Did she think somebody broke in to her apartment and changed the lock? Did she not think to double check the unit number? Does police training focus on lethal force as the first option used to resolve a situation?

She should be charged more harshly than if this was a civilian only shooting. Heck when a professional boxer punches somebody he is charged harshly. I cannot fathom how a trained and armed member of law enforcement is not held to a higher standard.
