This is what "stand your ground laws" are really about at their core. These... "good people" can initiate a conflict with an unarmed person of color who was minding their own business and then claim self defense when they kill said person that THEY approached. It's complete bullshit but it's nothing new... the South has a history of justifying blatant murder like this.

They are actual raising a more novel argument: it was a lawful citizens arrest. They claim that they had reasonable suspicion that Ahmaud was the person who had been involved in burglaries in the area, and so trying to apprehend him was within the law.

Reasonable suspicion in this case being a black man walking in the neighborhood?

All of these laws serve the same purpose.  To shield "good people" from the consequences of gunning down innocent people.  Again, this is nothing new.

This is going to sound super naive but shouldn't this only be an applicable thing if authorities are notified prior to a citizen's arrest (disregarding the entire notion it's fucking stupid, especially with rifles out like they were really trying to the community a favor)? I'm sure I already know the answer but pulling for some hope that justice is served.

Ahmaud Arbery killing: man called 911 to report 'black male running' prior to shooting

Quote

Audio recordings of two 911 calls have shed further light on the final moments before Ahmaud Arbery was shot dead by two white men while jogging through a neighborhood just outside Brunswick, Georgia.

The full recordings, obtained by the Guardian, come after new video footage showing Arbery’s killing in February was released this week, prompting widespread outrage and raising questions over why no arrests have been made. Transcripts of the 911 calls have been previously reported by local media.

Sigh... Police laugh after shooting and killing black man... not realizing they are being recorded on Facebook Live

Quote

The victim, Sean Reed, was live-streaming himself on Facebook when he was shot. Unknown to the police, Reed was recording as he was gunned down and the officers had no clue that after shooting him, they could be heard sharing a laugh over his dead body. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released a statement (in full below) stating that gunfire was exchanged between the officers and the victim. “There was an exchange of gunfire between the driver and the officer. The driver was struck by the gunfire.” Yet, in video clips that went viral, there was no evidence that Reed had or fired a gun. The following clips suggest that the circumstances are substantially different from the statement written by the Indianapolis Police Department. "That's gonna be a closed casket homie" a cop is heard saying

This happened LAST NIGHT. He seemed to be holding his phone as he was running so maybe they thought THAT was gun?

So the guy who shot that video may not just be a witness, he may have been a participant. Cops had that video since the day it happened and a lawyer who was on the case is the one who leaked it.

Makes sense, stories I've read kept mentioning a possible third participant with never any addition details I saw. And, while certainly possible, it seemed pretty convenient for a guy with a dashcam to pull up right when the shooting happened.
