Littleronin Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 Does this mean I will finally be able to uninstall the original game? Quote
elbobo Posted March 17, 2021 Posted March 17, 2021 looks good, I will probably pick it up after I have eaten through more of my backlog Quote
Littleronin Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Just started playing this and it is decent so far. There is a familiarity that makes it so easy to pick up and start playing, but I can't put my finger on it, something feels off. Quote
Commissar SFLUFAN Posted March 31, 2021 Author Posted March 31, 2021 Game Information Game Title: Evil Genius 2: World Domination Platforms: PC (Mar 30, 2021) Developer: Rebellion Publisher: Rebellion Review Aggregator: OpenCritic - 77 average - 83% recommended Critic Reviews Saving Content - 5 / 5 stars Quote This is Rebellion at their best, a game that’s like coming home even though you haven’t been there for nearly 20 years. Sure, some things have changed, and you’re not sure how navigate it, but you feel good being there. Rebellion kept what worked in the last game, added a bunch of new things, and it all feels like Evil Genius still. If you’re new to the series, this is a great starting point for anyone. For returning players, this is a sequel in the truest sense, with more fun and replayability than before. Evil Genius 2: World Domination is easily my favorite game of the year, and it’s never felt so good to be bad. The Digital Fix - 10 / 10 Quote Hands down the most fun I have ever had on a base builder. Providing you with everything you expect and more to fill you up on your evil deeds. A true kudos to the original entry in the series, you will have your wicked way in no time and soon the world will truly be yours! 33bits - Spanish - 90 / 100 Quote The evil geniuses return stronger than ever, with a very continuous title, but without losing an iota of quality. Shacknews - 9 / 10 Quote Ultimately, Evil Genius 2 is a Dungeon Keeper clone in a different coat of paint. The surface has been well-prepped and the paint was applied with great expertise, though. If you consider yourself a fan of simulation-strategy games, this has to go on your must-play list for 2021. 9/10 secret boxing glove traps hidden in corridor walls Use a Potion - 9 / 10 Quote Rebellion have done a wonderful job in breathing life into Evil Genius 2: World Domination, with its satisfyingly villainous gameplay and charming presentation embracing the vibe of the original game perfectly. I always thought that the original was one of the genre’s most unique and fun titles, but the new ideas that have been implemented here don’t only add a modern twist to the established formula but better it too… it’s really good stuff. Ultimately, with plenty of hours of spy killing fun to be had, Evil Genius 2: World Domination will turn players into the delegating and ruthless egomaniac they never knew they wanted to be – and believe me, they’ll have a damn good time in the process. Destructoid - 8.5 / 10 Quote It comes across as a diabolical labor of love. The game is obviously made by people who cared for the property, as it conserves everything that was great about the original title while tightening the screws on the old doomsday device. Even without the multiple campaigns, it's a ridiculously long game. But the fact that I was rarely annoyed or bored, while continuously finding new elements to love, is a testament to how well-executed the sequel is. If the first game wasn't diabolical enough for you, this one should scratch that evil itch a bit better. IGN Italy - Italian - 8.5 / 10 Quote A great sequel for a great classic. Management can be tricky and some items can feel unbalanced, but all in all Evil Genius 2 is stylish, delightfully comedic and a blast to play. Attack of the Fanboy - 4 / 5 stars Quote Despite some flaws, Evil Genius 2 is a doomsday device built to dominate your free time. It's addictive, easy to understand lair building and retro Spy-Fi aesthetic will pull you in and not let go, even after hundreds of hours. It's a shame the titular Geniuses don't feel all that distinct, and that the otherwise stellar UI has some annoying issues, but that won't stop Evil Genius 2 from taking over your world. It feels oh-so-good to be oh-so-bad. Checkpoint Gaming - 8 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2: World Domination proves that exciting strategy games aren’t always super complex and difficult to learn. This base-builder is an outright joy to play for both hardcore players and those who just want to dip their toes in. Compared to the original, the gameplay is much more engaging and appropriately paced across the early to end game lairs. The often underutilised spy theme is used so well and feels fresh, with Rebellion Developments presenting it superbly in both style and substance. While it does suffer from some finicky menus and AI, it’s easy to be charmed by the rest of the package. Cultured Vultures - 8 / 10 Quote Though by no means revolutionary, Evil Genius 2 is a solid, expansive, and fun lair management and defence game and a welcome return for the franchise. GameByte - 8 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2 has no delusions about what it’s trying to do. It’s simply trying to be a good sequel to a classic, well-loved game and at that it more than succeeds. Its simplicity or lack of innovations aren’t shortcomings. Instead, it allows the game to do what it does best without trying to be something it isn’t. It’s just plain and simple good fun. GameSpace - 8 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2 is a solid management sim that will keep you entertained for many hours between its good-natured humor, fun gameplay loop and little details. The game can get a bit frustrating due to the repetitiveness of the world stage and the stubborn minion AI, but not enough to overshadow its successes. Also, it is incredibly satisfying to see the agents try to pass your trap maze. GameSpew - 8 / 10 Quote A simulation game with a twist, Evil Genius 2: World Domination is a must-play for fans of the genre. Forget building hospitals, theme parks or zoos; creating the world’s most evil lair is where it’s at. There’s plenty to sink your teeth into here, and an awful lot to learn, but once you get the hang of being evil, you’ll discover that being bad sure is good fun. GamingTrend - 80 / 100 Quote In some ways falling short, but in many ways vastly exceeding the original, Evil Genius 2: World Domination is everything we wanted in a sequel to one of the best evildoer simulators ever made. It recaptures the spirit of the original, brings it up to modern standards, and lets us play in an evil sandbox of our own making. GideonsGaming - 8 / 10 Quote It doesn't stray far from its inspiration but still delivers key improvements with stronger replay value, better visuals, and an experience that's fresh enough to feel new while staying true to itself. If it could have ditched some of the flaws that plagued the original it would have been perfect. Regardless, Evil Genius lives To Die Another Day God is a Geek - 8 / 10 Quote Anyone who ever dreamed of being the villain building an island base to rival Dr. No should give Evil Genius 2: World Domination a fair shot. Hardcore Gamer - 4 / 5 Quote But even with these brief spots of imbalance - when the Lemming-like behaviour of minions can feel a little too brain-dead or uncontrollable - Evil Genius 2: World Domination is still an impressive revival of a decades-old philosophy on strategy games. Hey Poor Player - 4 / 5 Quote Evil Genius 2 is a surprisingly addictive (evil) management sim. Despite there being a bit of repetitive busywork to do, there’s plenty of global domination wickedness for even the most power-hungry megalomaniac to sink their avaricious teeth into. Metro GameCentral - 8 / 10 Quote By perfecting the Dungeon Keeper formula, the best James Bond game since GoldenEye proves that playing the bad guy really can be more fun. PC Invasion - 8 / 10 Quote If you've ever had dreams of taking over the world with a comical Doomsday Device, then Evil Genius 2: World Domination is the near-perfect game for you to see it happen. Rapid Reviews UK - 4 / 5 stars Quote As a massive fan of building-simulation games, I was very eager to play Evil Genius 2. The overall goal is World Domination; building up a lair to find new ways to take over the world. A rich network of game systems synchronise with one another to work towards this goal. But is the game terribly good or just plain terrible? Find out in this Rapid Review. Rectify Gaming - 8 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2 makes good on the premise of the original. A superb concept is fully realized with fun and intricate gameplay to back up stellar presentation. The Games Machine - Italian - 8 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2: World Domination is a competent sequel, even if it remains inferior in several respects to its direct predecessor. The gameplay formula has been modernized, but some features that made the first chapter a cult classic have been inexplicably removed. A shame because otherwise we would have had a real masterpiece in our hands, but several shortcomings and smudges make it "only" a good video game. TheSixthAxis - 8 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2 is a worthy return to the world stage for the classic lair builder formula. While there's certain areas that could be improved in the presentation or the game balance, building up your 60s spy villain lair and defeating the seemingly endless string of agents trying to foil your plans is immensely satisfying and engaging. VG247 - 4 / 5 stars Quote Everything that made that original game special, and ultimately a cult classic, is faithfully and lovingly reproduced here. It’s a safe reimagining, but simply on merit of all the small modernizing touches, which add up to a lot, it’s also pretty clearly a better game than the original – and considering how much I loved that game, that’s no small feat. I can see many more hours in my lair ahead – and with potential updates and DLC down the line to address some issues, true world domination could still be ahead. Windows Central - 4 / 5 stars Quote UI anomalies and enemy pathing issues aside, Evil Genius 2 is a deep and addictive simulation strategy game that will satisfy your inner desire to, you know, take over the world. Worth Playing - 8 / 10 Quote All in all, Evil Genius 2 is a perfectly solid update-slash-sequel to the original title. It doesn't break the mold but focuses on streamlining the core gameplay while adding more enemies, features and traps. It's similar enough that it probably won't change your mind if you didn't like the original, but by the same token, if you liked Evil Genius, you'll most likely enjoy Evil Genius 2. It's also a good starting point, as you don't need knowledge of the original to jump into evil scheming. It's not perfect, but it's probably the best supervillain simulator out there. COGconnected - 79 / 100 Quote Then again… sometimes I want to play out certain scenarios in gaming. Sometimes I want to pilot a starship and escape from devious traps. Other times, I want to make my way through an emotional family drama. There are different feelings for different days. Evil Genius 2 has a strength that no other game can offer – there’s nowhere else to play out this fantasy. Because some days you want to be Dr. Evil, and it’s pretty cool that there’s an outlet for those megalomaniacal tendencies! PC Gamer - 75 / 100 Quote A superbly stylish and surprisingly challenging management game, Evil Genius 2 is let down only by its tendency to bloviate. WayTooManyGames - 7.5 / 10 Quote Each new run in Evil Genius 2 will start off at a snail’s pace, especially if you’re a newcomer, but once you learn all of its mechanics (most likely by yourself) and get past its initial infrastructure-heavy first stages, you’ll be greeted with a funny, varied, and borderline addictive experience that lets you becomes the dumb spy movie supervillain you have always dreamed of. New Game Network - 72 / 100 Quote Evil Genius 2 is a fun, charming game which allows you to run an evil empire from your secret island lair. Despite some issues, the gameplay holds up to be a worthwhile experience. Digitally Downloaded - 3.5 / 5 stars Quote When Evil Genius 2 gets it right, it gets it spectacularly right, and if you’re the type that can bury your brain into resource management while laughing at the deliberately cliched and over-the-top style of the game, you’ll have plenty of moments of fun taking over the world, one carved-out-of-mountain-rock room at at time. However, there’s still some rough edges here, and some game balancing that could have made it even more engaging, both for those who adore resource management and those who might just like the challenge of taking over the world with the help of a few shiny new doomsday devices. Game Informer - 7 / 10 Quote Managing your base and bossing people around can be fun, but that simple joy is often obscured by layers of repetition GameSkinny - 7 / 10 stars Quote Evil Genius 2: World Domination is a great base builder undermined by slow pacing, dense AI, and a little bit too much repetition. GameSpot - 7 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2 makes good on its spy-movie supervillain concept with a challenging management sim that requires cunning and patience. NoobFeed - 62 / 100 Quote Evil Genius 2 presents as a faithful reimagining of the classic PC sim genre, but does the style hold up today? GameWatcher - 6 / 10 Quote A worthy sequel made unplayable by bad AI and the inability to have any direct impact on the people working for you. Sirus Gaming - 6 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2: World Domination has heart and humor which makes for a couple of memorable, chuckle-worthy moments. It can be intensely satisfying when you finally figure out how to do the things you need to do. The game’s music and atmosphere are very well crafted too. This is a game you can sink hours upon hours into, but your experience will be both good and awful, which is a bad thing to experience when it comes to a lair-builder game. It has a ton of quandaries Rebellion Developments will have to iron out in future updates, but for a game belonging to its genre, it’s not necessarily a bad game. However, at times, especially later on, calling it an “enjoyable game” increasingly becomes more and more untruthful. Wccftech - 6 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2: World Domination has a certain nostalgic charm, and not just because of its retro 007 stylings. It feels like something you might have found on your dad or friend's computer back in the Windows 3.1 era and sunk a few diverting hours into. Unfortunately, a lack of depth, challenge, and modern features makes the game hard to fully recommend in 2021. Some fun can be had if you keep your expectations in check, but don't count on Evil Genius 2 taking over your world. TechRaptor - 5.5 / 10 Quote Evil Genius 2 does a good job of reviving the spy-themed dungeon management game, but it's twice as long as it needs to be and it's sorely lacking for precision controls and policy settings. ACG - Wait for Sale Quote "The game has many of the issues of its 2004 original and is sometimes active in its desire to not show you data expected in today's gameplay. However, at times when things are working just right, it is enjoyable." Entertainium - Unscored Quote All in all, Evil Genius 2: World Domination is an entertaining sim with an incredibly fun premise that while slow at times is still rewarding to stick with and see through to the end. It’s also great to see developer Rebellion go out of their comfort zone and try something besides a shooter every now and then. They’ve managed to build quite a catalog during their run, and if Evil Genius 2 is any indication, they are more than welcome to experiment with their other hits of old. Quote
Littleronin Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 That Wccftech blurb cracks me up a bit. How old do they think the original is? Quote
