I don't really want to steam roll them though (that's why I put it a notch up on Jedi master to begin with), I just want the combat encounters to be entertaining :p Difficulty by sponginess and unblockable attack frequency isn't that though.

I really don’t want this to come off as a git gud post because lord knows I’m shit at games... but the KX series droids specifically? The dodge button gets you out of harm’s way pretty effectively when they’re coming at you with unblockable attacks. One of them you need to do an angled dodge, but one tap gets you away from the other in a position for a counterattack.

There’s a late game boss that had me salty based on their randomly spamming a bunch of aggressive attacks I couldn’t heal in between, but that’s the only time I’ve felt that way offhand.

 The Wookies look like they're fucking made out of wet noodles or something. Or like one of those painting restoration efforts gone bad.

Probably the same one I fought that had me feeling similarly... I beat him but after a couple of tries.

They look like the modeled them after the old Star Wars toys with the plastic "fur".

You do realize that my criticism has nothing to do with finding the game hard, right?  I beat the final encounter on the (first?) visit to Kashyyk on my first try. That fight includes a bunch of various storm troops, at least one of those droids I highlighted, and an ATST.

I'm not criticizing it because I'm having trouble getting through the game. If that was the issue I just would have reverted to normal difficulty. My criticism is the way that they try to add a challenge is utterly and totally boring to me.

I get that, I’m just struggling to understand specifically how any of the enemies would be called spongy; I don’t think the ramp in challenge comes the way I normally think of that term. I also don’t think that in general, enemies get more and longer unblockable moves except for that one boss who can eat shit.

Because it takes many slashes of a light saber while they stand there unresponsive to the hits, or enter into one of those attacks. That droid, for example is just "slash slash, dodge; repeat" and most of the "hard" enemies are exactly that way. I feel like I'm fighting a completely scripted enounter, as opposed to one that reflects things I'm doing to it and adapting its responses.

To be less reductive in that description, while most action game AI isn't all that sophisticated, it at least feels closed loop: I do this, it responds like this, and then the winning strategy is find the best response. In this game it feels like the AI just does what it does regardless of what I do and I'm just beating on a pin cushion.

Aaah right on, I feel that.

I would agree in general; I think most of the encounters get more challenging when they put multiple, different enemies in front of you. When you’re down to one of almost anything, it’s pretty straightforward. That makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, I completely agree. I felt the game combat shined best when you had to manage mobs. I easily had the most fun with that. Especially when you get force push and you can start being strategic about knocking some enemies off of ledges to manage it.

But there are so many one on ones (or small mob size enemy encounters) that felt very tedious because it felt so nonreactive.

Again, not sure how far you played but once you unlock or upgrade more force powers you can definitely end encounters in a variety of ways that I won't spoil for those still playing the game. More attacks open up the further you get into the game... like God of War or Tomb Raider etc.

I got up to the force pull unlock, but I stopped shortly after that because I found myself sighing too many times at various fights (even as I passed them).

Maybe the end half ends up a lot better and I'm missing out on that. But I think I'm okay with that :p I am hoping they refine this a lot in a sequel, because there is a good foundation here.

I'm not trying to change your mind, I'm just pointing out that some of your critiques get addressed by simply playing the game. I get if you don't find the game fun enough to keep going... lord knows I've given up on games that I'm not enjoying. Or I just skip games I have a good idea I wouldn't have fun with :p

But I find it very fun to talk in-depth about games, what works and what doesn't. I don't find the actual game of Death Stranding to be very good at all. But how and why it's built the way it is is fascinating, and I enjoy having discussions with those that don't lose their shit and take dislike of their game as a personal affront.

Where are you? There's always a way back. I would recommend not going back to explore planets fully until you have all your force powers though. There's some areas you just won't be able to get to.

The combat in this game is fucking awful.

another Star Wars games that utterly fails at a lightsabers. The game would actually be less frustrating with a blaster.

Surrounded by water? If you bring up the map, it will tell you the name of the area you're in.

That's where I am now. You have to go back up the elevator - you can't proceed until you get your next power I believe.

Sounds like the Venator crash site. By the troll that’s on the long platform (not the troll in the arena) there is a hill towards where you probably started (slid down from). You can go in there and it will take you to an elevator that goes back towards your ship.

Five hours in. Finished the prologue, fucked around on Bogano for a while then jumped right into Dathromir for 30 minutes, got my shit caved in so I fled back to the other two planets.  I'm pretty out of the loop with Star Wars lore having only watched the OT, Rogue One, TFA and TLJ but for what it's worth, initial impression so far is Respawn finally made The Star Wars Game.  Like there were several Batman games, then Rocksteady ended up making The Batman Game.  Neversoft made a Spider-Man and many more were attempted with varying degrees of success, but Insomniac ultimately ended up making The Spider-Man Game.  Starbreeze helmed The Riddick Game, as good, arguably better than most of the films.  And now this has finally been done with Star Wars.  Well played, Respawn! ^__^

Finished it last night. Super fun ride, I really enjoyed my time with it. I feel like with a little spit and polish for the camera during some of the combat and more encounters with mixed enemy types, they could have a really special sequel.

If you ignore Rogue Squadron games and the Jedi Knight games, sure they did it!

John considers the base Xbox version severely compromised (and says he would rate the XB1X version an 8/10, and the base XB1 version a 6/10).

He also suggests installing the game on the internal HD (all consoles) to reduce the texture pop-in and long pauses.

I'm really curious as to the issues some of you are having with the combat. A few of the animal type enemies are annoying in that they read your inputs and automatically dodge backwards from basic attacks sometimes, but other than that it seems totally fine. What specific issues are you guys having? I'm just mowing through everything, you're so OP in this game, at least where I am. Maybe it gets way more annoying?

I got a chance to put in another couple hours. I'm enjoying the slightly more open nature of the levels, the combat is fine, and the presentation is top notch (with the exception of a few bugs, like squeezing through a passage and not having the next area load).

My biggest annoyance with the game is the freaking load times and the infrequent save points. Yes, I know, git gud. Still, I've had a number of times where I died in the encounter right before a save point, and retracing my steps feels like a waste of time, but it's still not as bad as how long the loads take on the One X. I think it's the longest load time of the generation. When I'm flying to a new planet they hide it well enough, but when I'm just respawning it's silly. I also don't like that all enemies respawn on resting. It really doesn't make sense that I kill a storm trooper 10 feet away, I rest, and he's back! I feel like it's an odd and artificial way to increase difficulty or at least play time. Also, having all the enemies in exactly the same place all the time kinda kills the natural feeling of the open areas. It makes encounters that at first feel organic quickly feel forced.

Still, I'm enjoying it well enough to keep going.

I actually started to pay attention to respawn load times because everyone on console is talking about how long they are, and I notice even on PC+SSD they're far longer than usual, which still translates to only like 8-10 seconds but that's still WAY longer than most other games where we're talking 1-3 seconds. I imagine on console that difference is massively increased even further.

I'm wondering if it's just optimization issues that can possibly be resolved. Most of the qualms I have with the game seem technical in nature, like the stuttering, which from what I've gathered is actually present on every single platform. People are reporting things like textures or even parts of the world not loading in, it seems more and more like they had to rush this out a little earlier than intended (polish is the last step after all) and I think that has caused significant issues in people being able to recommend this game. "It's good but the world doesn't load in sometimes, or the textures don't load in, and every time you die it's 45 seconds until it loads" -- each one on its own is a fairly annoying issue, altogether I can see it making a lot of people steer clear entirely until if and when these issues are resolved.

The stuttering in particular seems to be getting worse with each patch instead of better. I'm actively not playing right now because it's starting to stutter in combat which is completely unacceptable to me. I have a sneaking suspicion the stuttering and long load times are related, but that could just be a thought I pulled out of my ass and nothing more.

Anyone know why we at some point seemed to switch over from what seemed like a sensible respawn system from other games back in the day? I remember it used to be something like you'd be teleported to the spawn point, and all the enemies would reset to their positions and it'd just rollback any items and stuff you got. Why do we now seem to completely unload the world (I'm assuming here) and then reload it? It's not like there's destructible terrain or anything that needs to actually be reloaded. It's just numbers in your inventory and a few spawn locations. I'd love to be able to ask developers about specific issues like this because they always have really interesting and well-thought out answers because obviously they're far more aware of what they can do than we are, but it just seems so simple from the outside, and we've seen it the way I described above before, so what's changed? Why is simply loading from death now this huge, time-wasting affair of loading an entire world?

I'll eventually play it but one thing I've been curious about is how the hell do they tie in respawning bonfire enemies into a Star Wars game in terms of an explanation?

Respawning bonfires in FO are just places you meditate and a screen pops up showing your character entering a psychic realm thing for an unknown amount of time, and also video game logic + Star Wars movies are basically live action animation, and the game is animation live action of the live action animation.

Nah, Control has this beat by a country mile. Load times here are pretty bad, but Control's are unbearable. Agreed about the checkpoints but there are more than you think. You just have to find them. Upon revisiting certain planets, I've found checkpoints that weren't accessible before so once you explore more, you WILL find more checkpoints.
