What? I dont like games that look like pixalated shit. There's a right way of doing pixalated graphics and then there's this where all i see is a bunch of moving blocks instead of a nice animated character.

An animated character is literally a bunch of moving blocks. Does not compute.

Impressions seem rather mixed on this game. I think I will wait for a sale.

I was gonna Day 1 it but don't like some of the negatives I've read. They're things that would irk me. I'll wait and see if it ends up being patched and overhauled like many of these games seem to. If not I'll pick it up sometime later.

My demo impressions were obviously very good but don't like the frequent mention of level design and upgrades not being very good and useful.

Ended up buying it the other day and with some patches and balancing, there's a great game underneath some of the rough shit I think. It's not perfect and has some issues but overall the more I'm playing, the more I'm getting sucked in. It definitely leans way more into the spiked pits/enemy memorization per screen type of design rather than Metroid in terms of moment-to-moment gameplay.

I will say that I think anyone, what the one or two of you here, considering buying this should hold off. There are a ton of bugs and other stupid shit adding a layer of annoyances right now and I really think they're going to patch and balance the fuck out of this.

This game is getting free DLC August 4th.

Also, I just replayed the entire game the other week after it had received a quite significant patch and it really feels much better than on release. This is one of those games that really ended up growing on me and the crazy Catholic Guilt lore and unsettling atmosphere along sets it apart quite a bit after a while. In its current state, controls, combat and platforming are tighter than the demo and Day 1 were and many irritating bugs and other annoyances were fixed and/or balanced.

Really looking forward to this new content now.

PS: I'll add that I'm pretty pissed at myself now for having just run through it when this apparently revamps quite a bit of content about the base game as well.

I just downloaded and started this game as my next one as I finally caught up on my backlog (was really feeling something dark with awesome 2D pixel art graphics Metroidvania) and so far it is quite stunning to look at and listen to, the mythology is so unique and different, and the atmosphere/ambiance/art design are very intriguing. I heard there's a lot of backtracking but so far for me it's been a pleasure to play.

I know I've already said plenty about the game in here but the updates, patches and DLC have made this pretty much an excellent game in my book. On paper, it really looks like a Souls rip but it has its own macabre vibe completely and I absolutely love the full-on sacral/religious theme. It has typical Metroidvania style backtracking but I never found it cumbersome personally, there are many shortcuts and the fast travel points are usually at decent enough spots with the areas not being overly huge.

Also like you said, it's often a pretty stunning looking game and some of the art is just gorgeous. It's kind of like my rose-tinted versions of dark 16-bit platformers actually come to life.

Yeah, pretty much all of this. Looking forward to playing a lot more this weekend.

Protip: practice and use your parry off and on. There are instances later in the game where it very much comes in more than handy and there are items that make the window very generous. The parry is actually really cool in this game. Also, you can parry in mid-air and even some projectiles (I think?)

Ah, good to know! Yeah, I have been trying to utilize it as much as possible - I'm past the first Humiliation boss (of 3) and definitely needed to parry in that fight. I'm more concerned about this X + RT double jump in air move after you hit something with an attack in mid-air? I haven't been able to pull off any such move yet, but it was definitely in the opening tutorial section.

The parry is also really cool, agreed. And these visuals, seriously, goddamn. I like the music a lot too.

Damn I can't remember right now which move that is exactly otherwise I'd give you a tip, I beat it twice so far and should know. Are they maybe referring to the vertical downward drop attack? By the way, there are some pretty obscure and cool side quests and much like Souls, read everything. The little mini-stories in the bone fragments collectibles are especially cool.

Yeah the lore (as in Dark Souls, as you say) is a lot of fun to read. Obtuse and abstract but a story does come together. The lore button helps (as well as the item descriptions). As for the move in question, it's a move where you can jump twice more in the air if you do an attack move (any attack move) and hit something while on your first jump. So you can get up to three jumps while in the air.

It's the Air Impulse technique - apparently it's not quite a double jump, but the tutorial wording makes it sound that way.

Air Impulse :: Blasphemous General Discussions (steamcommunity.com)

Further explanation. I think it might essentially just keep you in the air for more of a full combo instead of one strike instead? I remember being confused by this as well but don't recall if I ever figured this out because I never looked up anything. So it's the difference between Hold Down + TAP Attack vs. Hold Down + HOLD Attack (downward plunge)

Yeah that seems to be the difference - I haven't pulled it off yet but not trying too much either. Since it's not as key as a double jump I'm less concerned about it now but I'll learn it eventually. :p

About 40% through the game I think. It's awesome - really enjoying it. No metroidvania has the unique dark ambiance and mood and tone and atmosphere of this game, and the pixel art is more 32-bit than 16-bit which is even better. This is an underrated gem. A bit simple in terms of combat but otherwise stellar game so far.

I just wanted to say I ended up basically 100%ing this and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very fun game.

I've beaten it three times by now. Ended up replaying it again as well while you were wrapping it up in April I think. It's such a great game and the DLC additions were worth yet another replay, easy. The more I've played it, the more I like it and actually think it's really underrated.

Also, how good artistically speaking is that moment in the game where you're just a shadow against the sunset running across a gorgeous landscape

It's glorious. I really loved the art style and design/tone of the game. I did enjoy the DLC though I would have enjoyed more levels than just bosses (we kind of got that with the speedrun levels). Great, great game more people should play. And yeah I beat it awhile ago (right before Returnal came out) but forgot to come back and post about it until now.

Because I was a Kickstarter backer of this game, I was asked to complete a survey from the developers who were giving it on behalf of a student in Spain who wanted to know if the game had increased a player's interest in Catholicism :p

There are so many jokes that I can't even pick one.

I responded to the survey indicating that it hadn't increased my interest in Catholicism because I was already raised as a Catholic :p

Ditto. The game's use of the imagery is amazing though. The lore collectibles (bones) are so cool.
