~*Official Prime Minister Boris Johnson Thread of Anglo-Saxon Embarrassment*~

Jeremy Corbyn Has Called the Extreme Centrists’ Bluff (Jacobin)

Quote

With his proposal for a caretaker government to stop a No Deal Brexit, Jeremy Corbyn has finally torn the mask off the hardline Remainers and centrist ultras. They’d rather see Britain crash out of the EU under Boris Johnson than risk departing from neoliberalism under Jeremy Corbyn

The EU should just buy Ireland.

The EU can afford to pay off their potato deficit, it makes sense.

The shit is about to hit the fan.

This amounts to a coup, pure and simple.  Supporters of the government are saying that it is normal to suspend Parliament before starting a new session... true, but usually it is for 3-4 days.  Boris is trying to stop Parliament from sitting for 5 weeks.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/aug/28/pms-plan-to-suspend-parliament-aimed-at-evading-scrutiny-of-mps

A petition was started this morning against such a suspension, and is currently getting over 2000 signatures a minute!

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/269157?fbclid=IwAR1KDK7ZgdwoxNNi-yQHD0ujwEHu_2JZFQFbuUDpgfPiRT-h91WPVTHwSx0

There are plans to demonstrate in Parliament square this evening.  There are also plans for a ‘People’s Parliament’ to sit in Church House.  A legal challenge to the suspension will be heard tomorrow.

There are also calls for a general strike.

In a way, this might not be a terrible thing for those that oppose a no-deal Brexit. It pushes the opposition into high gear more than a month early. We could find out next week if the votes in parliament exist to pass legislation stopping a no-deal Brexit. I'm no expert, and I wouldn't personally bet on such legislation happening, but I do feel like such a sudden and harsh attack on the role of parliament might be more likely to produce such legislation than just leaving them alone.

Someone let them know it's not to late for Zaku3 to make Britian Great again.

It's going to get worse. Options the government is considering:

  • Create new banking holidays
  • Filibuster Parliament
  • Disrupt debate set for Northern Island
  • Creating new lords to pack the House of Lords to prevent Brexit bills there
  • Prime Minister refuse to resign if loss of confidence motion

Of all the possible sparks that could trigger a recession in the US and Europe —especially now that the market already seems to be in an increasingly recessionary state, with an inverted yield curve, a US manufacturing slowdown, increased stock market volatility  and a contraction in German industry underway—Brexit is one of my top candidates atm.

If a no-deal Brexit would have happened not long after the initial vote, when market conditions were better, I think the Brexiteers’ odds of getting out without setting off a slowdown would actually have been pretty good.  But they’re operating in a much more fragile environment now.
