Is it a simultaneous PC release?

loved Nioh, but the game started getting long in the tooth in the back 40 hours (including extensive DLC) and I just played that last year. That game demanded gaming skills I didn't know I had so beating that game so thoroughly felt like an accomplishment so I'm not sure I'm ready for the same but harder. We'll see how reviews pan out, I'm a little worried it's too much more of the same.

Hands On: Nioh 2 Is Primed to Become One of 2020's Best PS4 Exclusives (Push Square)

Quote

Team Ninja has opted to fine-tune what it already has rather than reinventing the wheel and it's going to be all the better for it. In a time where From Software's Elden Ring has seemingly gone AWOL, Nioh 2 can be the definitive Souls-like experience on PS4 for the year 2020 -- potential it is primed to fulfil as we edge closer to release. With a refined level of difficulty, Yokai skills for those theatrical enough to pull them off, and everything which made the original game great at the helm, this is going to be a PS4 exclusive worthy of your attention.

Hands on: Nioh 2 Review (Trusted Reviews)

Much like its intricate combat, Nioh 2 involves a delicate balancing act – providing more of what its dedicated fans want while attracting newcomers. The crux of this aim is a new twist to the formula and it might just work.

Nioh 2 Preview – Nioh Harder (TheSixthAxis)

Quote

All in all, Nioh 2 feels like a well-refined Nioh, which is all anyone can ever really ask for in a sequel. It’s definitely gotten a bit deeper, and that’ll keep those who are looking for a variety of gameplay options very happy indeed. Whether or not the whole game shakes out as well remains to be seen, but hey, we’ve only got to wait until March 13th to find out.

Nioh 2 won't be blunting its difficulty (Eurogamer)

Quote

If Nioh was Team Ninja rediscovering its mojo, then the imminent sequel sees the prolific Shinjuku studio further refine its beloved art. This isn't a radical reinvention, nor a drastic evolution; rather it's a subtle retooling that presents a more aggressive, fantastical and diverse playground of miscreants to scythe through. It's a mean, purposeful mutation of Nioh's original formula.

‘Nioh 2’ Reinvigorates the ‘Souls-like’ by Doubling Down on Demonic Difficulty (Fandom)

Quote

Nioh 2 is a perfect counterbalance to last year’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. From Software’s last game, in some ways, felt like a more stripped back version of the Souls experience – forcing you to rely on your prosthesis and your katana – and it received high praise for simplifying the masocore formula.

Nioh 2 may well go the completely opposite direction – laying stances, weapon types, stamina management, aggression versus defence, Yokai skills, positioning and weapon match-ups with a deft hand – but the result is a masocore game unlike anything we’ve ever played. Deeper and more varied than the original Nioh, and different enough from its peers to really make an impact.

Nioh 2 then, in its own way, charts the evolution of the masocore genre, and makes itself an indispensable purchase in the process.

Nioh 2's most promising evolutions are thanks to fan feedback (GamesRadar+)

Quote

Make no mistake, Nioh 2 isn't making these changes for the sake of it. It's still a tough game, designed for an audience who wants to overcome big odds and bigger bosses. While it's not entirely shocking for a sequel to improve on elements that were criticized in the first game, it's refreshing to see how open Team Ninja has been in addressing complaints from the community. When asked about this, Hayashi tells me it's crucial for the team to listen to players so they can make a game that they like. Again, no surprises there. But it's clear that Nioh 2 is laser focused on delivering for players who enjoy this type of challenge, as well as snagging new fans to boot. And after spending two hours taking it on, it feels poised to be the sort of herculean obsession that the best of these games are.

Nioh 2 Embraces Its Dark Side While Enhancing The Souls-Like Action (Gamespot)

Quote

Nioh 2 has more of what fans of the original would want from the game, and it was interesting seeing just how much of a change Yokai abilities make to the flow of battle. There are far more options for you to take advantage of in the prequel, which helps make overcoming the many harrowing encounters ultimately feel more satisfying.

OK, but how are the levels? Or like, have they finally gotten rid of levels? Maybe people like that more, but I am kinda glad levels have almost made their way out of gaming. Like, it is fine for mario or whatever, but I much prefer how Fromsoft does it when it comes to these types of game. Like, there are clearly levels in their games, but it is that one level always flows into another level except for those few times you have to warp or teleport to a new location. But Nioh was just get to the end of the level and fight the boss. It feel kinda old school, and I don't really like it.

I don't agree with any of that but to answer your question, Nioh 2 appears to have an identical approach to levels, and sadly level design as well, as the first game based on the demo I played. And not like the great first level but the lame later ones.

I'd love the level and mission style approach if the levels didn't consist of very unimaginatively thrown together From-isms with repetitive, and often even ugly, visuals. The demo seemed to reuse the same assets that had already been burnt into my eyeballs from endless reuse in the original game. If they weren't reused assets, they damn sure looked that way.

Sounds like you would have benefited from playing the PC version that looks pretty good. As for the rest, I can't help you there. I believe most people even from the start of this thread thought this looked like more of an expansion of the first game than a true sequel. :p

However, I did find this ugly "bars" screenshot. Yikes!

It's the art design and geometry that seems to be the problem for me so the PC version probably wouldn't alleviate that until someone mods it. The first one's, especially later, levels devolved into some awe-inspiring levels of bland and ugly with the indoor environments being the worst. The sequel's demo had the exact same generic "wood structure building plus unimaginative and somehow cramped exteriors" going on.

And yeah, I said the same thing, it always looked like DLC but the demo confirmed it and he asked. Actually, the original's DLC were better in my opinion than what I played of the sequel.

The PC version of Nioh looked excellent to me - maxed out graphics running smoothly at a buttery 60fps made the gameplay so good to me. I agree about the cramped level design, but the way shortcuts were incorporated and the "old school" feel it inspired were fun to me. I can't imagine playing such a difficult, hardcore game on the PS4 though, I can imagine it didn't look nearly as good and when the action gameplay is king here, any framerate hiccups or framerate stutter would spell death in this kind of game.

I definitely don't want more of the same as the last third of Nioh 1 (I include the DLC in that) started to really drag. It just needed to be shorter, and not so stupidly difficult - they presented situations that were difficult not in a clever way, but in a stupid, obvious way (here's a level where you fight two difficult bosses at the same time, they were hard when you fought them separately so here they are at the same time!).

This was the entire Nioh 2 demo. Their encounter design was crap in Nioh and it continues to consist of "let's throw MORE, BIGGER shit in even more cramped forest pathways!". This is exactly why I didn't care for it for example. They doubled down on basically all the shit I thought should've been fixed and instead added more layers to the combat and loot...which is the last thing that game needed in my opinion.

I'm with you - previews have been super positive though - I'll wait for reviews and see what they say. I'm waiting for the PC release anyway, by then everyone should have a good idea of what the game truly provides.

This is effectively Ninja Gaiden cranked up to eleven with RPG elements and your own custom created character; one that has a demonic past that inexplicably provides them with otherworldly abilities. And if that doesn’t make you want to play Nioh 2, I don’t know what will.

Gameplanet - 10 / 10

Nioh 2 shows Team Ninja at the top of their game. From it's newly added mechanics to the awesome character creator and skill trees, the amount of depth on offer is incredible. The sequel improves on the original in every conceivable way and makes it one of the best entries in the genre. While it may be sadistically difficult at times,  it's wildly entertaining combat will have you going back time and time again.

Fextralife - 9.7 / 10

Nioh 2 is a beautiful, polished and addicting ARPG seamlessly melding character optimization with action-packed moments, and elevating them with excellent level and enemy designs. Nioh 2 will challenge you to be better and keep you coming back for more, while allowing you to co-op your way through the hardest portions of the game. ARPG fans will want to buy this day one and enjoy the multiplayer wave at its finest.

Nioh 2 builds upon the successes and failures of its predecessor and offering new tools to battle with the role of a half-yokai as the player character. Some may say this iteration is even more brutal than the first!

Gamersky - Chinese - 9.5 / 10

Quote

Nioh 2 is a great successor and improve a lot in terms of combat by offering overwhelming half-yokai skills. But it doesn't make Nioh 2 easier because the enemies also become more challenging. There is no doubt that Nioh 2 is the most rewarding soul-like action game in 2020.

Glitched Africa - 9.5 / 10

Nioh 2 is not your average hardcore RPG. Its combat has become a fast-paced flurry of attacks, parries and abilities which sets it apart from other games in the genre. It successfully improves on the original game’s mechanics and merges some new fun ways to build your character that will see you venturing into new game plus with a beastly build. There is a lot of content to enjoy here too with the first playthrough lasting well over 50 hours.

PlayStation Universe - 9.5 / 10

Masterfully crafted and executed, Nioh 2 sets the benchmark for action/adventure games that people just have to experience. Team Ninja's latest provides one of the most in-depth combat systems and an addictive loot system that may put all but the best dungeon crawlers to shame. It's quite simple, Nioh 2 has Game of the Year written all over it.

Checkpoint Gaming - 9 / 10

While newcomers may certainly find it intimidating, Nioh 2 is a confident sequel that, in a year full of exciting game releases, commands your attention and won’t let it go easily.

If there's one point I want to get across above all others, it's this: Nioh 2 isn't as revelatory as the first game, but that shouldn't be held as a mark against it – at least not this time. Team Ninja was right to iterate and expand carefully. Nioh got so much right on the first go. While the new prequel storyline suffers from a slow and disconnected start, just about every other aspect of Nioh 2 feels upgraded.

Digital Chumps - 9 / 10

Nioh 2 is a balanced and beautiful game. It will certainly frustrate you to the point where you will want to walk away, but that first victory over a big bad demon will ignite a thirst in you to continue your difficult journey through ancient Japan. This game is not for the weak of heart, but most know that going into it.

Just as I have a special reverence for Demon's Souls, even as I recognise Dark Souls was able to refine and improve on "the formula", I recognise that Nioh 2 is the better game, while also missing spirit and originality, which has gone by the wayside.

An overwhelming amount of RPG systems, sublime controls, and fast-paced, skill-based combat mixes in with Team Ninja’s own stylistic flair and puts Nioh 2 more than a few cuts above other games that shamelessly ape From’s precious formula.

In this frightening and ruthless Japan, filled with all kind of monstruosity, there's no room for mistakes. Sure, Nioh 2 is hard, but it also gives one of the deepest combat system ever seen in a souls-like, and the wildest bunch of enemies to cut down.

IGN Spain - Spanish - 9 / 10

Nioh 2 is one of the best titles of the Souls-Like genre released to date. Its combat system introduces very interesting novelties and its narrative perfectly blends the Yokai legend with the history of Japan from the Sengoku period.

The more you play Nioh 2, the more you understand its charms. Often times the problem isn't the game, as much as you're playing the wrong way. Even if I just want to chop up every enemy with my sword, there will come a point where you need to use bows, guns, items and everything else to come out alive. Sometimes it will be hard, a few stages rely heavily on specific tactics but it's fun, rewarding and fascinating if you're willing to give it a chance.

Nioh 2 brings together everything that was great about the original Nioh and builds upon it. The yokai form, while flashy, does little to diminish the challenge and instead adds a fun new dynamic to an already engrossing flow of combat. While it might not look as such, Nioh 2 is a fantastic sequel and one that action fans shouldn’t miss.

Nioh 2 builds on the excellence of the original with a fistful of new twists and ideas, from new Yokai abilities to full-on co-op through the entire game. Nioh 2 might well be the best Soulslike that isn't a FromSoftware game, and it's easily one of my personal contenders for Game of the Year.

Nioh 2, despite being quite derivative, full of repetitive missions, and lacking true challenges later in the game, remains a riveting experience. This prequel looks like a mirrored image of the first game, but with some pretty ingenious level design, exciting enemies, and hugely satisfying combat and character creation systems, this game really hits home.

The extreme difficulty and many similarities with he first game will be like a huge nurikabe for a lot of people, but if you're patient and skilled enough to learn the ways of bushido, you'll find out that Nioh 2 is a great game where the good parts shines brighter than the bad.

PSX Brasil - Portuguese - 85 / 100

Nioh 2 brings back brutal and challenging combat along with yet another fantastic feudal Japan setting. The variety in gameplay remains one of the game's greatest assets. Fun and challenge go hand in hand here, even though the title still needs some balancing. Small defects as in the development of the story and in the boss fights are notable, but they don't affect the excellent experience that the game provides.

PowerUp! - 8.5 / 10

Bottom line; this isn’t a huge reinvention, but it sure is a damn solid sequel.

Worth Playing - 8.5 / 10

Nioh 2 is going to be compared to Sekiro, but it is its own beast. It's an excellent follow-up to the original game, and it isn't any lesser for being compared to FromSoft's attempt at the samurai Soulsborne genre. The new features help keep the smooth gameplay feeling intense and exciting, and the various tweaks do wonders for keeping the game fresh. Its biggest flaw is being "more of the same," but the original game was fun enough that a fresh new set of enemies and items is worth a lot. Just be prepared to die a lot. A whole lot. As in, "I saw multiple corpses by the first enemy of the game."

Spaziogames - Italian - 8.4 / 10

Nioh 2 adds some tweaks to a great combat system, with important features that open up a lot of customizations. Nonetheless the recycle of assets shows a creative impasse and an alarming lack of fresh ideas.

EGM - 8 / 10

Nioh 2 takes the ideas of its predecessor and greatly expands on them, bringing a greater sense of depth to everything from gameplay, to stage design, to your ability to have a main character customized to your particular play style (and visual preferences). Admittedly, some of the simpler elegance of the original Nioh has been lost in the progress, but the result is still a game that'll terrorize and thrill those looking for a real challenge.

GameMAG - Russian - 8 / 10

Quote

Nioh 2 is still a great game for fans of Ninja Gaiden and Dark Souls, which suffers from a weak story, pixelated graphics and outdated solutions, but pleases with addictive mechanics, atmospheric exploration and deep character customization. This is a typical Koei-Tecmo-style sequel, where the developers decided to make careful implementation of small changes, and many things that required a major upgrade were left untouched. Taking into account the lack of a cooperative and a deep RPG components in Sekiro, as well as no news on Elden Ring, Nioh 2 becomes the project that closes an empty niche. This game can be safely recommended to both fans of the first game, and all fans of such Action-RPG genre.

Nioh 2 crafts its tough experience with precise, delicious Team Ninja combat. On top of that is an entire mass of additional systems that offer players a way forward if your skills aren't top-notch. When those systems come together, Nioh 2 can make you feel powerful, but it does feel like a mess of numbers and bonuses thrown your way at times. You're surprisingly versatile, but you're also forced into a lot of management. A bit of trimming would've led to a near-perfect experience, rather than just a great one.

I don’t think a game has ever asked as much from me as Nioh 2. Yet still I return, because if a game is going to be this demanding, it had better be fair, and Nioh 2 is always fair, even if it often feels like just a little too much. It’s a puzzle game. It’s baking bread. It’s everything that yields rewards only after you learn to think differently, and learn consistency and focus. And I’m getting better at it. I’m getting wise.

I'll look into the game more later to see if it is worth picking up down the road. When I first beat Nioh I had said something like it was good, but I don't really ever feel like playing a Nioh game ever again. I still feel that way, but maybe the changes are enough for me to consider getting another Nioh.

Nope. The day or day after I beat the game I basically never touched it again.

It added a lot of content, so the game was even longer. The levels were at least more varied, though the game started getting stupidly hard near the end. The DLC was story DLC that did finally wrap things up in a lot of ways.

OK, I know my PC is spiffy and all, but seriously, why does Nioh 2 looks so blurry and shitty on PS4 Pro?! The AA is crap, the terrain takes on an other worldly blur whenever I move my character and in general it looks like shitty 1080P in movie mode and worse in action mode!
