Chipmakers including Intel Corp., Qualcomm Inc., Xilinx Inc. and Broadcom Inc. have told their employees they will not supply Huawei until further notice, according to people familiar with their actions. Alphabet Inc.’s Google cut off the supply of hardware and some software services to the Chinese mobile phone equipment giant, another person familiar said, asking not to be identified discussing private matters.

The Trump administration on Friday blacklisted Huawei -- which it accuses of aiding Beijing in espionage -- and threatened to cut it off from the U.S. software and semiconductors it needs to make its products. The ban, which had been anticipated, hamstrings the world’s largest provider of networking gear and No. 2 smartphone vendor.

Blocking the sale to Huawei of critical components could also disrupt the businesses of American chip giants like Micron Technology Inc. and retard the rollout of critical 5G wireless networks worldwide -- including in China. That in turn could hurt U.S. companies that are increasingly reliant on the world’s second largest economy for growth.

Seems like the end result here is forcing China to create their own ecosystem here, cutting off any bit of Western influence on their market. MAGA!

I'm not convinced that this is the right move (by the US Govt). Huawei makes great laptops, is innovating quickly on phones, and was likely to be the provider of about 25% of the 5G equipment that small ISPs were going to deploy. Crippling them seems like it will be a very real harm to US companies and consumers, and we've seen no real evidence that such drastic measures are necessary. So either the feds are in possession of privileged info that they don't want to share, or this is just Trump being impetuous. I think the former is possible, but the latter is more probable.

Are they a national security threat?

 We don't know because the proof the US Gov has isn't being made public. We're just being told to trust them.

I mean there is a chance they could be a security threat but technically wouldn't any US tech be as well to any other foreign nation out there? They all work on or are vying for defence contracts.

I had that same thought.

Anyway...

ARM is suspending business with Huawei. They're pretty fucked at this point.

Ouch, Arm is a severe blow and not a US company (but the fear is over it affecting some US tech they bought).

This spat is going to get ugly quick.
