Alabama Senate passes nation’s most restrictive abortion ban, which makes no exceptions for victims of rape and incest

Alabama lawmakers voted Tuesday to ban virtually all abortions in the state — including for victims of rape and incest — sending the strictest law in the nation to the state’s Republican governor, who is expected to sign it.

The measure permits abortion only when necessary to save a mother’s life, an unyielding standard that runs afoul of federal court rulings. Those who backed the new law said they don’t expect it to take effect, instead intending its passage to be part of a broader strategy by antiabortion activists to persuade the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, which legalized abortion nationwide.

Governors and lawmakers across the country are rushing to pass highly restrictive abortion bills in hopes of attracting the attention of what they see as the most antiabortion U.S. Supreme Court in decades.

I'll freely admit that I simply don't believe in the "right" to choose to have an abortion.

My entire support for the availability of abortion is based on one simple premise: abortion should be available so that society isn't burdened with unwanted mouths to feed.  That's it - that's all the justification that should ever be necessary.  No need to get twisted into theoretical knots about the existence of this right or that right.

Roberts should have a nice heel turn and vote to uphold abortion rights.

He won't, but he should

The Roberts court will strike down the near complete Alabama ban, and then uphold the 6 week bans.

The mainstream press will be complicit in spreading the message that this Is a triumph of moderation and compromise from SCOTUS.

This is how the court will acheive defacto banning of abortion while trying to blunt the political backlash of a fairly unpopular issue.

Not sure why pro-choice people bother bringing up the rape or incest issue, it isn’t as though you would agree to a bill that limits all other abortions :p

It's an important connection, though.

Refusing those exceptions is extremely unpopular. Allowing them is nonsensical.

It's an issue that perhaps best encapsulates why outlawing abortion is ultimately unworkable.

The issue of rape/incest exceptions is a red herring, without question. The vast vast vast majority of abortions are those of personal convenience and one side opposes that and the other side supports it. Getting caught up in fringe cases is a distraction from the actual discussion...if there can even be a legitimate discussion at this point.

Fuck anyone who supports this bs. You don’t fucking care for those that this hurts, that includes people who want a baby but get the shit luck of the draw.

It's more than possible that some of the people who support this law because they feel that abortion is murder.  I don't think it necessarily helps the pro-choice side when they scream that these law makers "only want to control a woman's body", when in many cases, that is not the reason at all.

So, medically speaking, how early can (not should) birth be induced?  Rather than have an "abortion" is there a way a doctor can have a woman give birth pre-viability?  "They didn't have an abortion, they just gave birth 7 months premature".  They didn't kill it; it just didn't survive.  Probably silly.  I'm just spit-balling for loopholes...

Regardless of the lawmakers' intentions, that's what they're doing. And it isn't in the interest of the person's wellbeing. It's in the interest of a fetus.
