All this is fine and valid, but Trump was still elected by the American people.

He was absolutely elected by the American states, as in, the land masses.

Unless I'm mistaken and these numbers are fabricated, several million more people voted for the opposition. But we don't go by the will of the American people, we go by the will of the electoral college and by invalidating individual votes or weighing some votes far more than others.

The votes of people are completely irrelevant. The votes of states on the other hand, why those are as good as gold. I mean, I'm sure you understood this is what he meant, dunno why we're pretending this is some unknown factor. People showing up to vote or not being touted as important when so many votes are functionally worthless is hilarious. If you're in a swing state you'd better show up, otherwise fuck off, we're here for that sweet sweet purple.

It's absolutely a "legitimate" win, but only because we use a fucking idiotic system to begin with. And it most certainly isn't "the American people" who are making a choice in the end, at least not in the way it should be. You know, the real simple way: The American people each cast a vote, you tally those votes, the one with the most votes wins. Simple, elegant, impossible to dispute, representative of the will of American citizens.

Do most countries select their leaders through % of popular vote?

Around the world, several different types of election systems are used in presidential elections.Of the freest 28 presidential democracies, an overwhelming majority require winners to have amajority of the vote. They achieve this through delayed or instant runoff elections. Two requireminimum pluralities, and a handful require bare pluralities of votes. One (the United States)allows popular vote losers to win through an Electoral College system. These variations createmeaningful differences in how candidates campaign, who gets elected and how much choicevoters have.

This has been answered above, but boy I sure wish we asked questions like this about every system we had that sucked shit instead of when it's just convenient to a specific argument. "Do most countries pay for their own health care on an individual basis in a way that can have them go bankrupt?" "Do most countries spend half a century in the Middle East?" "Do most countries worship guns?" "Do most countries have blatantly corrupt for-profit prison systems and treat prison as a punitive measure instead of as a place to reform criminals?" "Do most countries evangelize ignorance and blind loyalty as a sort of counter-culture to the 'elite?'" "Do most countries treat their politicians as celebrities to be worshiped?" "Do most countries allow their police forces to become out-of-control murderers protected by the system?"

With the obvious implication of the countries in question being first-world.

He really wasn't, on election day more people voted for Hillary Clinton, he was elected and is the President.  But his election doesn't represent the will of the majority of the people who voted.

It is a little disturbing that something like 35% or so think he's just the best, but the majority of Americans have never been pro Trump.

And this too. Folks want to pretend like he doesn't have a significant amount of support out there and like those folks don't matter :|

This!

majority of the people in the military love the guy.. u mention of the crap going on during his presidency (hate culture, kids in cages) and they blow it off as if its an exaggeration or straight untrue......

bottom line is he has a giant chunk of the nation behind him.. worse still he has a large chunk insulated against anything that can be perceived negatively about him.., u add that with the usual political vote suppression and its a safe bet this man remains president.

The leader of my country only received 33% of the vote; the leader of the opposition received 34% of the vote.

Incorrect. The leader of your country was elected by a safe margin as an MP, and was then appointed as Prime Minister when greater than 50% of the other MPs (representing more than 50% of the vote) voted to support him forming a government.

What’s there to be confused about? ‘Look how right I always am’ in the face of international conflict is insanely narcissistic.

Soledad O’Brien criticizing Bernie being anti-war is a bit confusing, regardless of the “I always get this right” attitude.
