Subverse (Mass Effect-inspired, sci-fi porn, XCOM-like tactical RPG) was the #2 best-selling game on Steam at release

why

Is this a serious question?

BECAUSE THE PORN MARKET HAS ALWAYS BEEN HUGE.

Porn sells! It always has and it likely always will! Just because advertisers don't like it for moral reasons doesn't mean humanity somehow doesn't like FUCKIN' AND TITTIES, BOYS.

I'm not above playing something like this, but they need to work on them boob physics.

Honestly though, it was inevitable. There's always been a porn gaming market, but it's always been relatively low budget due to the fact that few major publishers will support it. But now, not only do we have crowd funding, but we also have this push by the mass gaming market to remove sexualized females from their games, and the ones that enjoy it will go somewhere else.

Just look at the dude that used to make the Kenran Sagura games. They've always been pretty crude, but with Sony moving to sterilize all the games on their console, he's probably going to follow suit and just move to PC where he can make whatever the hell he wants.

The bigger the push is in the mainstream, the bigger this market is going to get. I'm actually ok with that.

I've been criticized for my side-gig many times, my answer is simple. Don't like it, don't look at it.

Although the trailer wasn't super serious. I would think this would lead to more "realistic / mature " sexual situations in games. I know it says "Mass Effect Inspired" but the way that (Mass Effect) handled sex is you'd say some cheesy line and then you'd be treated to some weird gyrating love scene. I would wager this would handle it better.

RPS brought out an article similar to this concept https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/04/11/a-panel-shaped-screen-porn-with-plot-in-comics-and-games/

Videogames give us the unique opportunity of interacting with a virtual partner. We could do so much with this mechanically, narratively, educationally. Because visual novels are good, but sex isn’t only made of dialogue choices. Intimacy is also about moans and smiles and the way an eye twitch or fingers curls around yours, and we have so many tools we could use to better portray all this, and so many talented creators with good ideas and not enough resources to give life to their smutty dreams. If only we could stop feeling so ashamed.

Hey I dropped Shame off at the curb years ago!

Honestly, all kidding aside, I don't even really want a "porn" game per se, but I want a game that just gives zero fucks. I'm not even talking about overly-crude vulgarity, but just silly funny stuff, or every day mundane shit. Your Sims character needs to take a shower? Well then you're gonna see your Sim character naked, because that's life, and this is a life simulator.

Kinda like how in Saints Row IV when the boss breaks out of the alien prison and is bare assed, shooting aliens and not giving a shit. Now if only there weren't little blobs over the naughty bits because hey, the boss gives zero fucks, and the developers don't either.

I realize these games on PC have mods that remove censors and replace textures/geometry/whatever, but the fact these mods even exist should say something.

'We just wanted to make dick lasers and big bouncy anime titties,' says creator of latest Kickstarter hit (PC Gamer)

Speaking to Subverse's creative director about the £1.6 million Kickstarter porn game.

"I think Steam and Valve need to be commended more for their open approach to their storefront. In contrast, GOG love to champion themselves on social media as gamer-friendly and paragons of free speech, but they wouldn't even return our emails," I've reached out to GOG for a response to that claim and will update if it replies. "Meanwhile we've had zero problems with Valve even when we used their Source Engine for some of our previous movies. Sure there is a lot of shovelware on Steam as a result of the 'anything-goes' policy but there are filters and tools in place for consumers to make informed decisions on what they are buying."

"How do I put this? It's not my sort of thing—but it's made so much money and generated a strong response from a certain type of player.."

"The tone of the Kickstarter page says a lot about who the game is aimed at, and I won't pretend I didn't raise an eyebrow a few times while reading it."

By "a certain type of player" and "who the game is aimed at" I'm assuming the author means people without a stick in their ass that allow themselves to enjoy things without judgement of themselves or others.

Well this CAME out yesterday (get it?) and since I pitched into the kickstarter I got a copy.

I think it's pretty good.

I've only played 3 hours and like maybe 2.5 of those hours are tutorialesque

I think if you've been following this thread you know there's two basic gameplay modes: A space shooter and a turn based tactics mode. They're both actually fun, I think I'm having more fun with the shooter mode than the tactics one which is kind of surprising. But so far there is more depth in the shooting mode. You've got a normal shot, and a special shot but then you have like an invincible dash thing, but also each crewmember (Waifu) lets you use a different special ability and you upgrade your skills as you go.

The tactics mode is somewhat basic, just a grid, no elevation or anything like that, so it's more like a basic tactics RPG like Langrisser or something. There's no percentage based shots or anything like X-Com, your attacks always hit but you can defend to mitigate damage. Hopefully this opens up later but so far it seems you can only assign 1 commander (one waifu) and then you've got some genetic monsters you bring along, they all level up as you use them. They can die in battle but it's not permadeath, however, there are 3 waves of enemies and I believe the more of your creatures that survive the higher rating you get at the end.

Depending on who you choose for battle the more they level up and you gain affection which then gives you PP! (Pooter Points) and you spend the PP on dirty cutscenes. Yes there is sex in the game it's very lewd but mostly real time animated cutscenes with little interaction. You can choose speed and "cum" to finish. Not all of them are sex related though. I think the only thing that is weird here is the cum looks weird, maybe they will patch it. :p

Overall graphically I think the game looks great! The character models are very nice and animate well but the character designs are also pretty cool (except for the main character who looks like Starlord with panties on his face) but more than that the whole world design is amazing from ship design to environments and stuff like that, very impressive.

Finally the writing is ehhh both good and bad. I mean the story is pretty robust, very in depth with a lot of lore. The game throws a lot of story at you at the beginning. But as far as the dialogue, well, it's hit or miss. I mean very low brow humor, a lot of butt jokes, but some of the jokes are fun like the line, "Were you the guy who did the chronic run in 420 parsecs?" But even though some dialogue may be cringe I have to hand it to the voice actors who really sell it. So far, everyone has been great, and anyone who can sell me on the idea of fuccbots has my utmost respect.

I doubt any of you will play it, but I just came to say that the game turned out well, the story is good and well acted, the game looks very nice and so far it's fun and the sexy time is nice if you're into it.

It has been 4 days since Subverse was released on Steam, and we’ve had a fantastic reception so far. We love the passion and engagement you guys have been bringing to the table! We have received a massive amount of valuable feedback, and all of it is going to the devs.

The software development team want to assure our wonderful Kickstarter community that we take your comments very seriously.

We’re already hard at work fixing the bugs and preparing a patch.

What you currently see in Pandora is just the tip of the iceberg.  We understand that you expected more content in Pandora for Early Access and I can assure you we will deliver much more with regards to handholding.

A more comprehensive update is coming very soon which will detail the plans going forward.

Best regards,

Tibor
