~*Colin Trevorrow's Star Wars: Episode IX - Duel of the Fates OT*~

I honestly took it as a lie even in TLJ. He's just confirming to Rey what she thinks to mess with her.

I never took it as a lie in the literal sense. His pleas in the rest of that scene are sincere. Misguided, negging, and shitty, sure. But sincere. Maybe he’s preying on what he thinks her insecurities are, but I always read the scene in such a way that both Rey and Kylo believe the statement in the moment; Kylo’s not doing creative writing.

It can be simultaneously true that Rey is a

nobody from a family of nobodies AND that Kylo is trying to mess with her head. The first part fits the themes of the film, the second part fits the character of Kylo. I think both are accurate regarding the intentions of Johnson. But JJ could change it all up with the events of ROS.

Colin Trevorrow has confirmed that the Emperor was not part of the plan for the ST, that JJ brought him in only after taking over Ep IX mid-way:

Quote

Talking exclusively to Empire, Trevorrow explained his feelings about his name in the film's credits. "I’m not sure anyone who chooses the creative life should expect things. But I’m grateful to JJ [Abrams] for embracing some of our ideas. It’s exciting that fans will get to see the moments that felt essential to all of us."

Abrams, who took over co-writing and shooting the movie, went in some significantly different directions, including a return for a classic character. "Bringing back the Emperor was an idea JJ brought to the table when he came on board," Trevorrow says. "It’s honestly something I never considered. I commend him for it. This was a tough story to unlock, and he found the key."

On receiving writer's credit for Ep IX:

Quote

He's more guarded when asked about his specific work on the script. "That’s not my place, especially right now," says Trevorrow. "I know how hard this crew has worked over the past two years, a lot of them are working with us now on Jurassic. I want to support them as they put this film out into the world. In the end, I’m just proud to have my name in space."

Another Star Wars filmmaker, Rian Johnson, incorporated one of Trevorrow's suggestions into his own movie, The Last Jedi, working from a concept that the Jurassic World director had looked to include himself. "I just asked Rian if he could include a little moment where Rey and Poe meet for the first time," he says. "They’re such beloved characters, it felt right for them to have some history in the next movie. I thought the way he did it was perfect.

So...yeah this doesn't give me any confidence at all that this won't be a total mess. As someone on ERA has said, he could literally just do a "Kylo was good all along and is redeemed since it was the Emperor's will who was controlling him!"

In my mind this also makes it clear that Johnson really did intend to make Kylo irredeemable in VIII after Snoke was killed, and for him to be the Big Bad in IX.

Eeeeeeeeeeeh I dunno about all that. If Vader is redeemable (by Star Wars standards) then Kylo certainly is also.

I’ve got little doubt Rise will be fun... TFA was, even though I have a few quibbles with it / despite it being derivative.

Once they confirmed Palp was coming back, my biases kicked in and as long as the movie is fun, I’ll call it a win.

It is possible that JJ always wanted the Palpatine in Episode IX, but couldn’t make the decision while another director was in charge. I dunno.

it sounds like bringing in the Emperor was done early enough in pre-production that it should be well integrated and not feel like something stuffed into the movie during reshoots.

I’m willing to see the final product before I believe any of this doom and gloom talk from the same people that seemingly felt personally accosted by TLJ.

Just to be clear, I loved TLJ. It had a few flaws (mainly Casino sequence - I liked the message and idea, but it was handled a bit messy for me) but I loved the direction it went in (mainly that everyone fails, and the message is that failure is the best teacher).

Colin Trevorrow and his writing partner Derek Connolly receiving "story by" credits along with JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio (who get "story by" credits and "screenplay by" credits) means they probably had almost zilch to do with the final product, given how the WGA works.

JJ Abrams co-wrote and directed The Force Awakens (along with Lawrence Kasdan after they basically dumped Michael Arndt's script) and JJ Abrams will have co-wrote and directed The Rise of Skywalker (along with Chris Terrio, after they basically dumped Rian Johnson's "treatment" of Episode IX and whatever Trevorrow and Connolly were doing). Rian Johnson solely wrote and directed The Last Jedi.

If there's any incongruity between the films, it's between JJ Abrams and himself and Rian Johnson. I mean, if you co-wrote and directed two of the three films and they feel incongruous, it's probably because of you (and Rian Johnson). JJ Abrams said Rise of Skywalker was much less messy and much easier to make (with less "necessary" reshoots) than The Force Awakens so take that for what it's worth as well.

I wonder if JJ will fuck up again and do something similar akin to Leia hugging Rey over Chewbacca. At least he admitted after the fact that was a huge oversight . . . :p

In his commentary, he admitted that he blocked that shot incorrectly, not that Leia hugging Rey instead of Chewie was the actual mistake.

Here are JJ's specific words on it:

"That was probably one of the mistakes I made in that. My thinking at the time was that Chewbacca, despite the pain he was feeling, was focused on trying to save Finn and getting him taken care of. So I tried to have Chewbacca go off with him and focus on Rey, and then have Rey find Leia and Leia find Rey. The idea being that both of them being strong with the Force and never having met, would know about each other — that Leia would have been told about her beyond what we saw onscreen and Rey of course would have learned about Leia. And that reunion would be a meeting and a reunion all in one, and a sort of commiseration of their mutual loss.

Had Chewbacca not been where he was, you probably wouldn’t have thought of it. But because he was right there, passed by Leia, it felt almost like a slight, which was definitely not the intention."

Emphasis mine. That's what I thought the first time I watched it. Both are strong with the Force; they just have this feeling they know each other. But when people mentioned, "Yo, why'd she not console Chewie?" that's when I noticed the issue.

He elaborated more though in an interview with /Film (see @SaysWho? above as well).

He seems like he's trying to justify it, but gets he fucked up?

I rewatched Solo today... that movie definitely gets a bad rap. Not nearly as bad as the internet would have you believe.

It definitely has some bad points that really make me roll my eyes (Han... Solo), but overall, yeah it’s alright.

I felt that way when it was new. It was an alright adventure movie. For me the two biggest strikes against it was it wasn’t a story anyone was asking for, while not important enough I still feel was needed. And the guy playing Han does not do a very good Harrison Ford, so it is hard to buy that he’s the same person.

If I had to pick one to watch and the choices were Solo or Attack of the Clones, I’d choose Solo.
