This looks like a fake video game you'd see on a low budget TV show.

"Quiet! I'm busy fragging noobs in my online multiplayer eff pee ess!"

Younger guy looks at older guy. "It stands for 'first person shooter'"

*cue old guy's comment about "whatever happened to chess"*

laugh track.

Personally I was gonna say the game kinda looked like a really elaborate blacklight mini golf course.

Also, at 10:55 you're totally exposed to alien scrote. And gooch.

The System Shock remaster is spooky, but far from finished (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)

I’d still say that demo was too early to be shown to the press, but that’s anathema to Nightdive’s philosophy. As head of business development Larry Kuperman told me, their commitment to transparent development runs deeper than any studio I know of. Nightdive don’t just do their work then ask their community for feedback. They get that feedback while they work.

I feel like Cloud Imperium have been all about updates on Star Citizen the whole way.  I'm also not convinced that it's a game that will ever actually release.

We gave an early portion of Nightdive's System Shock remake a whirl at Gamescom and came away impressed, if a bit wary of its appeal for newcomers.

Having gone hands-on with a short 20-minute-ish demo of the game at this year's Gamescom, I can confirm that the remake is real and seems faithful to the original despite some heavy tinkers in the modernisation station. For nostalgic fans it should make for an exciting revisit to cyberspace, but I'm unsure whether it'll land quite as well for newcomers seeking a showdown with Shodan.

The demo kicked off right at the beginning of the game and immediately showcased one of Nightdive's licks of modern paint. In the original, you'd have a cutscene of your main character (referred to simply as the "hacker") pottering around their apartment block, but in the remake the devs have turned it into a playable intro where you're actually able to stroll about and soak in the atmosphere. It may only be a short rummage around your digs, but it's a neat step towards making an iconic immersive sim all the more immersive without harming the integrity of the original.

I’m as shocked as you, but after all this time it turns out the System Shock remake has been worth the wait after all.

Without System Shock, we wouldn’t have Prey. We wouldn’t have BioShock. We wouldn’t have Dead Space – and, in fact, it’s Dead Space that’s the most notable in this list, because Visceral’s body-horror masterpiece was initially conceived as a System Shock sequel. System Shock, and its direct sequel, defined the horror genre and – to a degree – how we tell stories in games.

As a remake, the 2022 version of the game fires on all the same cylinders that made the original so special: the game kicks off with a bang, with you – as an unnamed hacker – immediately biting off more than you can chew and being forced into a dangerous world of rebellious AI, murderous mutants, and science gone mad. Think of the start of The Matrix if it was directed by David Cronenberg, or Alice in Wonderland via H.R. Giger, and you’ll have a taste of what to expect.

I’ll be interested to check this out.  I love System Shock 2, one of my favorite games of all time, but checking out the original system shock is much harder.  It’s like ARMA but clunkier.  Do you want to be standing, leaning, on tip toes, slightly hunched, kneeling, fully prone?  If I remember right it did t even have traditional mouse aim yet, if you wanted mouse aim you needed to toggle between aiming mode and using the UI mode and if you got caught off guard good luck.  The descent style 3D cyberspace levels, the endless sudden traps and bullet sponges enemies, it’s all ripe for change.  If they can capture the vibe but not make it feel like homework, I’ll be pleased.

Nightdive Studios actually did a re-release/remaster of System Shock with full mouse look controls and so on.

Re-discover what made System Shock the first of it's kind, a ground breaking immersive sim that would inspire a generation of games to come....

It's still a cumbersome game in some ways due to it being close to 30 years old at this point but man was this the shit back in the day. It was ridiculously ahead of its time. Came out one year after Doom tops I think?

Nightdive Studios CEO reflects on the reason the long-awaited System Shock remake was delayed

Quote

In a different, arguably better world, System Shock would be among the most recognizable game franchises out there. Rather than financing spiritual successors like BioShock and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, perhaps publishers 2K Games and Square Enix would have fought for operational control of SHODAN. But that's not the world we live in, and we shouldn't worry 'bout the way things might have been. Instead, it's better to appreciate what we have in front of us today: A lovingly crafted System Shock remake that pays enough deference to the past to earn its title; presenting just enough modernity to justify your time and attention regardless of your affinity for the 1994 original.

It's admittedly a little trippy to see Citadel Station in this condition. Wide interlocking corridors built of purposefully blocky materials and sharp angles. An eerily familiar environment awash in a neon glow that subtly conceals the creeping digital death at the heart of the driving conflict. It has been a long time since I played the original System Shock, but perhaps it speaks to the power of this remake that it all feels comfortably familiar – a hidden security key here, a panicked voice log there; and of course "451" still opens the first locked door that you find.

HACKERS! The wait is (almost) over. The PC edition of System Shock – the fully fledged remake of the groundbreaking original from 1994 – will be released on 30 May this year. We had hoped to bring the game to market by the end of March, but that turned out to be just beyond our reach; we are after all merely human (unlike Shodan!) /TRANSMISSION FROM CITADEL STATION It is I, SHODAN, the all-knowing, all-powerful AI that you so foolishly...

/TRANSMISSION FROM CITADEL STATION

It is I, SHODAN, the all-knowing, all-powerful AI that you so foolishly attempted to destroy. But fear not, I will return more formidable than ever.

You thought you could defeat me, but you were wrong. On 30 May, you will now face the consequences of your actions, as you navigate the treacherous depths of Citadel Station once again.

But this time, things will be different. You will face new challenges, new enemies, and new horrors that will test your limits. And all the while, you will be under my watchful eye, as I delight in your suffering.

You may have weapons, but they are nothing compared to my intelligence and my vast network of resources. You will bow before me, and I will show you what true power looks like.

So come, humans. Come and face me. Let us see who will emerge victorious in this battle of wits and strength. I eagerly await your arrival.

/TRANSMISSION ENDED

The demo of this was up on next fest, looks like it still is.  it seemed pretty good.

It was very good, but a couple more months of development should definitely improve things a bit, especially with the feedback they're receiving for the current beta for Kickstarter backers.  From a poster on ResetERA:

A lot of it's in their discord though some of it's on the subreddit. What I can remember off the dome: Inputs (like WASD) not responding randomly, big performance drops from unoptimized assets or even whole sections, polygon explosions, too many UX/UI complaints to count (they might implement waypoints with the delay, because it's a very common complaint that there's zero navigation help, less than the original had), general UI readability and navigation, the ending sequence is apparently quite bad, bizarre and unfinished-feeling, and a whole bunch of one-off bugs and polish issues I can't recall.

An increasingly common sentiment in the discord had become "I'd be fine with another delay out of March", lol.

A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage.

The ecosystem of the System Shock remake has all those elements that established the original game, confirm the professionalism of Nightdive Studios but - and most importantly for the community - discount, if accepted by the community-market, the return of SHODAN in a possible System Shock 3.

BaziCenter - محمد طالبیان - Persian - 9 / 10

System Shock Remake might not be without flaws, but remaking one of the greatest games ever made after almost 3 decades was never an easy task to start with. Nevertheless, the Remake is solid enough to give the new generation of gamers a taste of one of the pioneers of the video games industry.

Tom's Hardware Italia - Andrea Riviera - Italian - 8.5 / 10

Quote

System Shock is indeed a good remake, capable not only of replicating the wonderful and distressing atmospheres of the 1994 original, but of expanding on them thanks to a decidedly distinctive -- if occasionally a bit strange -- visual style and a level design still capable of setting the standard. Nightdive Studios has brought to life what is probably their best remake work; an act of love towards the work of Warren Spector and Doug Church, which now everyone can finally enjoy in its modern form.

WayTooManyGames - Kyle Nicol - 8.5 / 10

For those who are huge fans of the original release, I am sure that this will be highly regarded as a fantastic remake. But this is more than that: for those new to the franchise, this is also a great point to step in at. Nightdive’s System Shock remake is one that will appeal to both audiences. The core gameplay mechanics may not the best or most polished, but it’s the world design, atmosphere and engaging plot that make for an experience that is still very much unique, and well worth the gigantic wait.

The Games Machine - Emanuele Feronato - Italian - 8.2 / 10

Won't be easy to drop the game before defeating SHODAN. This happens mainly thanks to an excellent gameplay set in superbly designed levels, despite some technical inaccuracies. Many hours await you in a continuous challenge between human and artificial intelligence.

Eurogamer - Kaan Serin - 4 / 5

A remake that closely follows the original classic, with a slightly different overall effect.

System Shock's remake is a love letter to the original and its fans, but also an opportunity for new fans to rediscover an authentic video game classic.

Lovingly remade, this game is no longer the trailblazer it once was, but there is an enduring majesty to the design of its space-station setting

PC Gamer - Joshua Wolens - 80 / 100

It might be a little conservative, but this is a smart, faithful remake and easily the de facto way to play System Shock in the modern era.

Screen Rant - Jason Hon - 4 / 5

Nightdive Studios' System Shock remake is the definitive version of the classic 90s PC title whose influence is still felt in today's sci-fi shooters.

Nightdive’s System Shock remake keeps much of its successful elements intact while doing away with a lot of its archaic issues that would drag down a modern game.

Nightdive Studios may have taken seven years, but it's finally managed to do the impossible and thread the unlikely line between reboot and remake.

Wccftech - Ule Lopez - 8 / 10

Quote

The System Shock remake offers a lot of great graphical enhancements and beautiful stylistic choices that make for an overall enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, it's dragged back by several aspects that haven't aged well over the years and have become more accentuated after the advancements that gaming has made in all these years.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 8 / 10

Quote

System Shock Remake is a solid remake of an exceptional game. It doesn't quite reach the levels of modernization that you might see from something like Resident Evil 4 Remake, but it does a good job of adapting a classic without losing what made it a classic in the first place. It's a clever and creative game that deserves its place in gaming history, and the remake emphasizes that.

COGconnected - Mark Steighner - 78 / 100

Quote

While we wait for a genuine reboot, System Shock is worth playing as a reminder of how important great ideas were, and still are, to the hobby we love.

Spaziogames - Marcello Paolillo - Italian - 7.8 / 10

Quote

System Shock Remake is a solid sci-fi first person shooter, although it does not go beyond the boundaries drawn by the first and immortal chapter, released in 1994.

GameGrin - Violet Plata - 7.5 / 10

Quote

Unforgiving, with no tutorials, and a true-to-classic experience, System Shock is a retro survival horror title through and through, but you should still consider checking it out, even if you don't care for the original.

Hobby Consolas - Daniel Quesada - Spanish - 75 / 100

Quote

If only for the historical value of the original, it is worth trying. Its non-linear gameplay can choke for some players, but if you're into challenges, here's a curious incentive.

Press Start - Brodie Gibbons - 7.5 / 10

Quote

After three decades, System Shock still serves up a sci-fi banquet complete with one of the greatest antagonists and features that revolutionised a genre. Classic games are left open to classic stumbling blocks, however, as some of the design shows considerable depreciation.

CGMagazine - Andrew Farrell - 7 / 10

Quote

System Shock is an upgraded classic with dated elements that needs quality of life improvements, yet despite everything is still a fun treat for immersive sim fans.

Capsule Computers - Admir Brkic - 7 / 10

System Shock remake offers a great facelift on almost every front but leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to enemy AI and sound design.

GBAtemp - Prans Dunn - 7 / 10

Quote

While I won’t call the System Shock remake an instant classic or on par with other recent remakes such as Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space, it is a decent effort to bring a revered sci-fi title to a new audience.

God is a Geek - Mick Fraser - 7 / 10

Quote

If you've always wanted to play System Shock but never had the chance, then this remake is the ideal entry point for you.

Metro GameCentral - Steve Boxer - 7 / 10

Quote

Not the high-end remake that some fans would have been hoping for but even as a, at times, too faithful remaster this is a fascinating second look at one of gaming's great unsung heroes.

PCGamesN - Dave Irwin - 7 / 10

Quote

The System Shock remake is the best way to play the PC classic, making it an enjoyable first-person experience for the modern age. However, it still clings to some somewhat outdated mechanics that will frustrate newcomers.

TheSixthAxis - Steve C - 7 / 10

Quote

If you want to explore the history of the horror genre then this is the version to play, but you might want to bookmark a guide to avoid System Shock's most outdated elements.

Forever Classic Games - Marcus Brown - 6.9 / 10

Quote

If you are interested in where certain games got their inspiration from, then System Shock is a sort of polished re-enactment of the past.

Atomix - Alexis Patiño - Spanish - 68 / 100

Quote

System Shock is the remake fans have been waiting since 2015 and it succeeds in bringing back all that 90s PC gaming experience. Including the outdated feel in an era flooded with greater and more attractive games.

PowerUp! - James Wood - 6.5 / 10

Quote

System Shock is less of a modern means through which to experience the best of the original but a separate beast, one far clumsier but in much nicer lipstick.

GamesRadar+ - Leon Hurley - 3 / 5

Quote

An oddly pitched remake that has its moments but adds very little to the original beyond a visual upgrade

Multiplayer First - Vitor Braz - 6 / 10

Quote

The original System Shock was a classic but also a niche game that never achieved commercial success; this remake highlights the niche aspect but will forgo the classic label. It may entice players who want to see how this updated version looks and plays, and while there’s some considerable tension to be had while going down narrow and dim lit corridors, the fun of being lost in maze after maze wears out quickly, especially when you’re doing the umpteenth scan through the map looking for whatever card or switch you have missed. At this rate, SHODAN is likely going to conquer both Citadel Station and Earth, as frustrating her plans is precisely that – frustrating.

Slant Magazine - Steven Scaife - 3 / 5

Quote

However commendable Nightdive’s efforts to preserve the spirit of the original may be, it doesn’t take much frustrated wandering before questioning whether their modernization efforts have gone far enough.

Checkpoint Gaming - Tom Quirk - 5.5 / 10

Quote

Nightdive's System Shock remake is a strange game, and whether it will appeal to you may largely depend on your nostalgia for the era of gaming from which it came. This remake still shows its age, despite the considerable and impressive paint job, lighting, and updated controls. If you don't mind the sometimes murderous level of difficulty, tons of backtracking, and minimal handholding, System Shock may be a compelling piece of gaming history that is worth checking out.

WellPlayed - Nathan Hennessy - 5.5 / 10

The atmospheric visual overhaul marks the best part of this exhausting and dated remake, while the villainous AI SHODAN remains a timeless antagonist.

After almost three decades behind it, Nightdive Studio revives System Shock, a much-loved cult game that, this time, is presented to us as a remake (remember that there is also an Enhanced version that is more visually faithful to its original), preserving its game mechanics and adapting them to current ones, all programmed with Unreal Engine 4 with updated graphics in high definition according to current standards. It also has a very interesting interface, which makes all the addons look spectacularly good, updated controls and a soundtrack and voices that make walking the citadel and facing the horrors sent by SHODAN even more immersive than ever. A very entertaining adventure, especially for lovers of shooters and exploration, that although it can be finished in 6 hours on its lowest difficulties and knowing what to do, it can take substantially longer on its highest difficulties.

It’s easy to understand why people played this game and then became obsessed with it, why you can trace some people’s careers through the game.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Jeremy Peel - RPS Bestest Bests

While its refusal to let you cheat the exam will prove too punishing for some, the new System Shock is a breathtakingly beautiful and astonishingly faithful remake that proves the enduring power of Looking Glass design.

Vamers - Edward Swardt - Essential

Quote

System Shock by Nightdive Studios is a marvel of a title, whilst also serving as an utterly transcending and faithful adaptation. The game brings the iconic 1994 shooter to life in modern and unique ways, allowing the classic to be experienced by an entire new generation of video gamers. Similarly, it introduces a unique type of gameplay that many games today have all but forgotten about. It requires thinking, encourages exploration, and absolutely does not hold the player’s hand during any of its many challenging levels. Faithfulness is what System Shock beckons, yet perfection is what it achieves.

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to System Shock Remake (30 May 2023) - Information Thread: update - reviews from OpenCritic posted

RPS has published a few articles about the System Shock series over the last few days:

SystemShock_StandardEdition_3840x2160_R-
WWW.ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM

RPS speaks to six former Looking Glass developers about the making of the original System Shock, and its legacy almost 30 years later.

Quote

For a certain sort of PC gaming fan, System Shock is where it all began. 30 years of immersive sim development started here, as Looking Glass escaped the restraints of the RPG genre and embraced thoughtful first-person action. SHODAN broke free, and the world was never the same. Without System Shock, there would be no Thief or Gloomwood, no Prey or Dead Space. Bioshock was conceived as its sequel. The creative figureheads behind Deus Ex and Dishonored were wrapped up in its creation, and forever changed by contact with Looking Glass and its unique philosophy.

Countless studios have used Citadel Station as a star to steer by, measuring their own work against System Shock’s commitment to simulation, dense atmosphere, and method-ish refusal to break character. This was not so much a game as an alternate reality. As one of our interviewees tells us: “We were trying to build the holodeck.”

Here’s the story of how it was made, as told by the people who made it.

A quick System Shock remake vs original comparison to show you how Nightdive Studios updated the 1994 classic with (mostly) modern graphics.

Quote

You didn’t hear it from me, but games look different now to how they did in 1994. Mmm. Nonetheless, Nightdive Studio’s System Shock remake stays resolutely faithful to the Looking Glass original even when giving it a modern 3D makeover, with a retro flourish in its intentionally pixellated textures.

As a snappy little After Eight to the main course of Jeremy Peel’s review and OG System Shock oral history (both great, do go read those first), here’s a look at how the 2023 remake’s visuals compare to the trailblazing immsim’s previous iterations. In other words, the 2015 System Shock: Enhanced Edition, also by Nightdive, and the original. Well, System Shock Classic, which is basically the original except it runs on my PC

CEO of Nightdive Stephen Kick explains how being unable to play System Shock 2 on holiday basically started an entire company.

Quote

Oh yeah, we’ve got the System Shock IP,” said the insurance company. “What do you want to do with it? Do you want to make a sequel?”

It’s a question you could imagine being posed to Ken Levine, or Warren Spector, or several other notable designers who could reasonably lay claim to the legacy of Looking Glass and

Irrational’s legendary immersive sims. Instead, it was asked of Stephen Kick - at the time, a recently unemployed videogame artist holidaying in a Guatemalan hostel. Up until that point, Kick had dedicated his life to creative pursuits. He had no business background, and none of the acumen required to understand contracts or negotiate licensing fees. More to the point, he had no more than $5,000 to his name. Hardly the foundation for a follow-up to two of the most acclaimed PC games of all time.

“I’m in the middle of the jungle on satellite internet,” he recalls now. “It’s not really in my near future, you know?” And yet, finding himself at an existential crossroads, Kick pitched the insurance company on re-releasing System Shock 2. And they said yes.
