Nokra Posted September 17, 2022 Share Posted September 17, 2022 Been really tempted by an Ioniq 5 to replace my 2007 Prius with 280,000 miles on it, but 1) the general availability still hasn't caught up to demand 2) for the rare dealer that does have one, they're tacking on an additional $10k in "market adjustment" fees to the price. Traded it in for a civic and while it’s not nearly as nice as the truck, it’s a fun little car. You’ll get that market adjustment down fast. You’re in Portland if I remember correctly? Your best bet might be to try a dealer in a part of Oregon that’s in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, you're right, I'm in Portland so maybe I need to look significantly south (probably not east since I doubt they'd offer any EVs at all). Do you like to take long road trips? Needing to plan your trip based on charging station locations is the only real downside if you do. If you're never going farther than the round trip you can get on a full battery then there's no real downside. Just to torture myself, I've been continually looking around for one of these and the wait period is about 2-5 months if you're willing to pay $7500+ over MSRP or 1-1.5 years if at MSRP. Averaged exactly 40 mpg on the way there and 42.4 on the way back after really focusing on drafting as much as I could the last 150 miles or so. For some reason seeing my average mpg be above 40 instead of like 18 made me want to keep it that way. Went 400 miles without the low fuel light even coming on. This is with the ac on the whole time. I could probably eek out 500 miles on a tank of straight highway driving. Otherwise, I just dropped some coin to update my stereo. I got a Denon DRA-800H receiver. My AudioTechnica turntable plugs into that, which then goes into a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 12.2 speakers. They really blast. I set it all up yesterday for using the turntable and I got Bluetooth to work. Let me tell you... Casting random Youtube playlists or Spotify onto this receiver is wonderful. I'm never going back. Next, I need to buy a new TV. My old LCD is too small for the space and I need to upgrade anyway. THAT'S the terrible decision I have to make. I went to Best Buy yesterday and talked with staff there... TVs are too complicated and too similar in stats. I just want a normal un-fancy smart TV. She received the most powerful treatment available in two rounds of chemo in 2018/19, and theoretically it can halt progression...but it appears to have failed. Two days ago she started experiencing numbness/loss of sensation on the left half of her face, and it's spread to her torso. She can still move everything, she just can't feel anything (so her speech is slurring, etc). We went to the ER on Monday night, but we left after 7 hours as it was clear we wouldn't be seen before 12-14 hours, and once we'd been there a while it was clear it was her MS, and not a stroke (which was the initial fear). Unfortunately our healthcare system is completely overloaded right now from a combination of COVID and healthcare staff all quitting (from bad experiences due to COVID). The provincial government is far-right and doesn't give a shit, and is openly talking about starving the public system so they can bring in private options. So now she'll need an MRI to confirm, but it could be weeks or months before she's able to get one. Then, a different treatment, and that means being much, much further immunocompromised. Very few service members are war fighters, even during the surges most weren’t kicking in doors. America absolutely needs those Americans, but they also need logistical clerks, intel operations, mechanics, food service. My little cousin, 19, is talking about enlisting in the marines and going infantry, I’m telling him to go Air Force and be an avionics tech instead. it’s unfortunate that our society has constructed this amazing tool for social mobility on military service, but it’s still better than anything else we’ve done.
