Had a third (final?) interview on Friday morning...Was told I could hear that day, or as late as Wednesday. Still no word and the wait is agonizing, I’ve imagined multiple scenarios in my head to rationalize the wait as both a positive and negative development.

I need to make a list of amazing shit Biden has done and compare it to the list of shitty awful things. I’m constantly defending this motherfucker from rabid progressives on FB and I just want a chart to plan my trolling game better.

I'm interested in seeing the list of good things.

I was in the interview process with three different companies and ultimately took a contract offer for a remote position from a company in Philadelphia because the interview process is just so uncertain! I had a really nice offer on the table and I hadn't heard from one of the companies that said they wanted to move forward in the interview process in 4 days. Shit is tough. At least I'll be working in the healthcare field, which was my preference.

What kind of work are you doing for them? Done with the service industry?

The pandemic gave me the opportunity to pursue a data science bootcamp, which I graduated from in November. I will be a Data Analyst! Now I just have to pretend I know wtf I'm doing in SQL before Monday.

Do you know what database your company will/ is using?

You're probably going to be tasked with understanding the databases/data/business before you're trusted to pull and analyze data in any meaningful way. This is similar to what I gave newer analysts at my last job and should get you started. The specifics of the db used (oracle, postgresql, mssql, etc) will be useful later but right now you'll just need to know the basics that would apply to virtually any of them: basic query setup, how to select, how to do various joins, and maybe some other useful things (group by, having, order by, etc)

Find a random data set and save it in a sqlite database and play around with it.

I've been using the SQL tutorial at mode.com, but this looks great too, thanks! Also trying to complete the UC Davis Coursera SQL course by Monday.

Nice. Yeah try a lot of different stuff but just make sure you get to write sql to get a feel for it. Set theory is good to have but that's a whole semester math class if you really want to dig into it after a while (but may be helpful in the long run)

Local theater chain gave up plans to open a drive in theater near (~1.5miles, in downtownish) my house because they say they wouldn't be able to run the whole summer season (and definitely has nothing to do with them potentially selling the site for a proposed casino) so it just doesn't make financial sense. I could see city permitting taking a while but the excuse seems flimsy. What say you @sblfilms? I wanted a drive in that isn't a 35 mile drive outside of town so this is disappointing.

Still no word, sent a follow up email about an hour ago. Pure agony.

Obviously the casino thing could play a role. My gut reaction is that everybody in the industry is getting bullish on the recovery and they want to focus their efforts on their core business model more than anything else.

Ugh, sorry, this is the worst feeling. When I was in a position to hire people, I let them know of a decision within a couple hours if it was a no. Sucks to be on the hook :/

Yeah, and you can fill the void with any amount of scenarios to have it make sense. Maybe it’s a ‘no’ and they are waiting to lock in their top choice first; maybe it’s a ‘yes’ and they are awaiting approval; maybe they had to reschedule the other interview and don’t know yet. Who knows! The longer it goes on the more I’m preparing for a denial (if only to prepare for the worst), but either way I want to *know*.

When I finished school I applied for three jobs, got an offer on all three, and while deciding which one to go with my wife encouraged me to not take any of them and do the movie theater thing instead. I still remember the intense feeling of uncertainty while waiting to hear back. It is very unsettling to just not know.

For real though I know how much that sucks. I had a three hour interview once, which included the guy grabbing someone else who hadn't originally been on my interview schedule to come talk to me...and then nothing. I followed up a few weeks later, I don't remember if I got an acknowledgement to that email but then nothing again. Never heard back from them at all. It was really weird.

I’d be able to manage if it weren’t for the more or less specific timeline she gave me. I can wait in suspense, but not once we start going past the benchmarks you gave me! Especially since previous to this the HR director had very forthright/timely (and at every stage has made a point of saying ‘either way you’ll hear, because I don’t like to keep people in limbo’)

The longer it goes on, the more I think there is some tomfoolery going on...Maybe the hiring manager and COO (who primarily ran my last interview) have a disagreement, maybe the board is dragging its feet, maybe a board member is pushing for someone they know. The seeming change in demeanor is just bizarre.

Depending on how large the company is, it’s really common for there to be big disconnects between the hiring manager and people who have to pull the levers and twist the knobs to get things going. And if there’s an internal requirement team involved, all bets are off, the shit I would hear them say was absolutely bananas.

I assume you’ve already done the things where you check their hiring portal and online job sites to see if the position is still posted?

Hope you hear back one way or another soon.

Just completed the 2021 census online, took 10 minutes. Some new questions, like what were the household residents' assigned sex at birth vs current declared gender. Unfortunately I was only assigned the short-form census, not long-form. :(

My mom got hers a few days ago and I think she got the longer survey. Asked about her mental health with Covid lockdowns and asked about both alcohol/cannabis consumption. Did you consume more or less alcohol/cannabis during Covid restrictions last year? Numbers should be interesting to see once they’re all calculated
