General Gaming Recommend me some retro games

Recommended Posts

I'm currently in the process of buying a PVM for my retro gaming consoles and I figured that I would go back and play some games I haven't touched in a really long time and hoping to look for some new ones.

To be honest, really nothing is really off of the table. I haven't play things like Super Mario Sunshine or even really Mario 64 to a certain degree (I've played 64 at a friends house, but never really had a save file to try to beat the game). So recommend me something.

Current Retro Consoles:

NES

SNES

64

GC

Xbox

Genesis

PSX

PS2

I plan on buying a Saturn at some point

A bit more obscure but:

Demon's Crest (SNES)

Really cool and rather overlooked game that always springs to mind for great SNES titles.

Also if you haven't played it, get on Contra III (SNES) right away. Unbelievably fun game to learn.

Both Mario 64 and Sunshine hold up well.

I know it's not fully a retro experience, but both are modable in emulation to be 16:9 widescreen and 60fps.  Seeing them like that really reinforces how much Nintendo nailed the core of these games.  With Mario 64 especially, it's insane how much they got right the first time.  Great level design, great controls, even the camera isn't so bad.  Only thing I'd nitpick is the wall jump being finicky.

Sunshine isn't quite as good, but I used to replay it every summer.  The vibes in that game, I love it.

But I'd proritize Banjo Kazooie first.  Still as good as ever, and holds up better than practically any other 3d game that generation.

I always quit in the first mode-7 level in Contra III, haha.  It just feels bad to me.  NES contra has a better perspective shift.

No way! Those top down shooter levels are great!

Sorry, I hated them.  Well the first one, if there's more.  It's too much like a maze, and using L/R to spin the camera was way too fast IMO.

Oh yeah, there's definitely more and they get crazy hectic. I think this is a case of...

There is an Eternal Darkness CIB at a local shop, but its $50. I might try to wait for a deal on eBay to pop up.

Lunar looks fun

Demon's Crest looks fun, the only Contra I've played was on the NES and I was never very good at it. Though I mostly played it when I was very young.

SM64 is on the list. Sunshine will be as well if I can get a decent deal on one. I think I have Banjo, I'd have to flip through my games in storage.

I have Chrono on the DS and I think I bought it on stream as well. Do carts run pretty high?

@Nokt OK, I will but I have some questions?

Are you looking to track down the games and buy them?

Are you looking to play on actual hardware?

What are some game genres you like?

I ask because I might recommend some expensive games and some rare games and if you have like a flash cart or plan to emulate then it will be easier to play. Otherwise I will consider availability in my recommendations.

A lot of these are pretty pricey if you want the originals. Particularly Chrono and Demon's Crest.

SNES is a rather expensive system to get into. There's obviously some great games that are affordable, but a lot of the great ones aren't remotely cheap.

Also, nice job going for a PVM. They're quite nice. We have a couple.

I'd say it really depends on the game and situation, but yes playing on OG hardware and finding the game is preferred. If its a rather expensive game (like Eternal Darkness) I'll either pass until I can find a deal on it or just emulate depending on how bad I want to play it.

Pre Xbox my gaming experience is pretty limited, I still played a lot, I just didn't play a lot of games. I had like 5 SNES games growing up after someone stole almost all of our games, I only played NES at my grandparents so I barley even played that. N64 my family hit a rough patch financially so we got like 2-3 new games a year max. I had a Sega Nomad growing up and Sonic was my jam for many years. I played Final Fantasy at a friends house growing up, but I didn't get my own Playstation until PS2.

So I'm really open for trying anything, but I'll post some games I had fun with that aren't super mainstream popular. Midtown Madness 3 (Xbox), Baja Blast (N64), Winback (N64), Goof Troop (SNES), Aladdin (SNES), Evolution Worlds (GC), Klonoa (PSX), Custom Robo (GC).

I had a feeling that Chrono would be expensive. I'll probably just play that on my DS then. That said I'm not exactly against repro carts either.

I played CT on DS, it's fine there.

Honestly, if you're thinking about repros, just invest in a flash cart. You'll save money.

Left field recommendations then.

Bomberman 64: The Second Attack.  Surprisingly great story mode with some fun bosses, puzzles and environment designs.  I love the way this game wraps up with a great final level and ending sequence.  The music is also notable, was scored by the Chrono Trigger guy.

G-Darius (PSX) - I don’t have any special love for the shoot em up genre.  But this game is damn fun.  You can capture enemy ships to fight alongside you, save up your power ups for screeen filling attacks.  For the PS1, it also looks incredible.

Baten Kaitos Origins (GC) - Amazing JRPG.  Great characters, battle system, stylish world, etc. It’s like a better Chrono Cross.

You or someone else on the site has recommended Baten Kaitos before. I bought it off that recommendation, but haven't played it yet

Bomberman is definitely going on the list.

Just make sure it was the 2nd, not the first.  "Origins" is just that, so you can skip 1.  The first is decent, but a bit of a slog and lacks its own identity for the first 1/3rd of the game.  Though it has a neat mid-game twist, and hilariously fun ending that mocks a very particular gaming trope.

First I would say, Skip the Saturn and go for a Dreamcast. Now my recommendations

Darkwing Duck (NES)

Tiny Toons (NES)

Batman (NES)

Lion King (SNES/GENESIS)

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2&3 (PS2/GC)

Project Gotham Racing (Xbox)

I prefer Saturn to Dreamcast, but the main reason I'd say skip the Saturn is that most of the good games are going to be out of the typical person's budget. There's not going to be much for you on Saturn, unless you're willing to throw down big bucks.

Thats good information, I'll probably put that on the back burner then. I do have a friend that has some games like Nights and Virtua Fighter, but doesn't have a working Saturn. He would probably give me his collection if I asked, but I'll just ask to borrow them

This seems like a good idea, but whereas I'm looking specifically for certain games (for now) it seems counter productive. Hopefully I can pick up the couple games I'm looking for, then sign up and find a few new ones that are fun :)

In terms of lesser known games that you can find inexpensively, for PS2 I really enjoyed Spartan: Total Warrior, and Disaster Report.  Spartan is sort of a hack-n-slash/crowd control third person action game with some really cool mechanics, and it really holds up.  Disaster Report is a bizarre, cheesy, and fairly janky game about surviving a major catastrophe, but it's really unique and super fun once you get used to its low-budget b-level aesthetic.

For Xbox, I highly recommend SSX 3, which is probably the peak of the series.  There are also lots of great driving/shooting games from that era.

People have covered tons of great games, so you'll have more than enough to play.  Dreamcast is my favorite all-time game system - if you end up getting one of those there is a ton to recommend.
