ahahahaha

Being in news, what I'm hearing is that many people in the Miami Herald (and I'm pretty sure plenty of other organizations) were tipped about this but couldn't confirm it, so this is probably someone in news considering the reputation that subreddit has.

Would it exist if sex work was legal

Probably in some form. I'm guessing that if you're running a human trafficking operation you're probably not paying a fair wage, and you might want to employ sex workers that wouldn't be legal even if sex work in general was. I would think that legal sex work (which I do support), would cut down the incentive to do this kind of thing, but I don't think it would eliminate it.

Trafficking for this kind of work would certainly be less frequent if it were legalized and regulated. Is that in question?

I was giving RSF shit for going from “should be legal” to that apparently meaning that if sex work was legal trafficking wouldn’t happen.

That said even if sex work generally was legal and regulated I’m skeptical that this kind of thing specifically would be meaningfully reduced, as I find it difficult to imagine that we’re going to grant a lot of visas to foreign sex workers. That’s a different thing, though. I don’t think it’s unheard of in Amsterdam, for example.

People are trafficked everyday to do legal work, so it seems silly to conclude sex slavery would cease to exist if prostitution were legal. Stealing the labor of vulnerable people for the economic gain of another isn’t something that only happens with prohibited commerce.

No.

If there were brothels and house-visit escorts that were federally licensed and regulated and were cheaper than the black market, then yes it would. People said the same thing about the black market for marijuana in Colorado and how it would survive...and it's lost almost everything to the legal market since prices are cheaper and it's legal and convenient.
