Unlike certain movies that will make money in spite of reviews, is there the equivalent in the videogame world? The closest series i can think of is COD? Maybe Madden? Reviews in Videogames definitely impact sales and with the scores I'm seeing for Anthem,  they would HAVE to miss their sales targets right?

I was going to say the opposite, anything Rockstar releases is pretty much guaranteed to get near perfect scores no matter how the game actually plays or how fun it actually is.

Yeah when I was into sports games the dudes who really were into sports games gave 0 shits about reviews (unless they confirmed what they thought).

I think some games are review proof in a different way, in that reviewers seem afraid to deviate too much from a high score. The mainline Mario games are like this. Sunshine has some good stuff going on, but I’ve long said if that game was starting Ricky Racoon it would have been reviewed in the 6s and 7s.

But generally I’d agree with call of duty and sports games. It also seems like the destiny-likes have a contingent of fans who swear the game is good no matter what, and each new expansion also makes it good for real now (even though it was good before).

I also think MMOs are somewhat impervious to reviews, because it’s just not realistic for a member of the press to really understand those games around the release window.

Probably right. Though I think “review proof” they mean the game will sell boatloads even if scores in the 40s and 50s. It’s sales are detached from the meta critic scores.

I think COD is definitely that title as we’ve seen bad COD titles sell very well.

Mother than Madden and FIFA I am not sure what else would do that. Grand Theft Auto probably could, but I do not think they will ever release a GTA game bad enough to prove the theory.

Apparently anything released first party on Games Pass as Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 still sold relatively well despite metacritic scores in the 60's, and while we don't have any sales info on Crackdown 3 yet, all indications are people are still playing it despite also being a  low 60's metacritic game as well.

I guess i need to clarify what I mean by review proof... are there any game series that consistently sell well in SPITE of scores? Rockstar Games, COD Games and Madden Games all score fairly high right? Like even if the scores were bad the game and or series still sold well? Are there any Japanese games that fit the bill?

This is what I'm talking about... I think State of Decay 2 DID end up selling pretty well.

For me, anything major FROM releases going forward. I kind of barely care about even seeing videos and shit.

Sekiro was announced and I was buying it Day 1 no matter what.

From software probably has the Rockstar effect going for at this point where anything action oriented they release is going to review extremely well. Not saying they haven't deserved it, but they have a pretty strong cult following (which includes me, I'm buying Sekiro day 1 unless early previews suggest it's a broken mess or something)

Dark Souls III actually got quite the string of 8's and 7's as far as I recall. Not saying they're bad scores but compared to Rockstar's absurd bullshit for example...phew.

Well it must have got a lot of 9's because it's metacritic right now is at 89

I still think Madden fits your bill.  There have been bad years where the reviews hammered the game and I don't think sales really showed any reflection of the scores.

Crackdown 3 also seems to be immune to it's poor scores - but I think that is a function of game pass.  I don't think many people would have purchased it, but lots of people are playing it.

Review scores may have a lesser impact in the future.  If people see others having fun with a game on twitch or it is a game they can play for "free" through a service they already have then there is really no barrier to try it for themselves anyway.

I have selective memory because it annoyed me so I choose to only remember the worst scores.

Maybe Star Wars?

Has there ever been a Star Wars game that sold under 1million units?

I’m sure it sold more than $1 million, but Battlefront 2 was a massive failure and reviews / reporting was a huge factor in that.

Call of Duty sells every November regardless. They have a solid core base. Myself included. They always release right before thanksgiving which is great because people have extra time off during that time.

Rockstar games. And I'm saying it because in no world should RDR2 have gotten the ridiculous scores it did.

Madden and CoD are the obvious ones.

RDR2 was one of my all time gaming disappointments.

Guitar Hero, when it was a thing.  Just Dance as well.

Red dead is a game at odds with itself in many ways. I understand why people dislike it so much.

But it has some of the best character development and story I’ve ever seen in a video game.

For real. I still haven't gotten back to that game, I haven't touched it since early November.

Damn, for real? I haven't played it but could give some reasons without spoiling anything as to why you feel this way?

This is probably a good example... do those games ever score highly? People like them because they're like mindless fun.

I haven't played one of those in over a console generation. They play way too similar.
