UPDATE: Trump signs funding bill and declares national emergency, promptly admits he didn't actually need to declare a national emergency

10 still only puts them at 57, 10 short of an override.

Right, I was just saying that 10 defections should put them right in the place where anyone who wants to vote that way can.

If they were getting too close to an override majority I think McConnell might start whipping votes to keep it from happening.

Exactly. His die hard base isn't necessarily enough to help win a reelection but they are enough to guarantee a loss.

The resolution got 12 Republican votes, which, while not enough for a veto override, is still a significant number. Despite this being a losing issue for the GOP, we've seen relatively little pushback. This isn't enough to make me think that the GOP is willing to fight Trump on anything, but it's a tiny step in that direction.

His base doesn't explain all of their votes, look at a Gardner, hes absolutely going down in 2020 and he just voted with Trump in a state where every statewide race went to a dem in 2018, and Trump is -15 approval.

If it's just about fear of the base, how do you explain people like Flake and Corker?

So here's how it stands:

Quote

Several senators in competitive re-election races sided with the president and opposed the resolution, including Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Martha McSally of Arizona, Joni Ernst of Iowa, David Perdue of Georgia and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who changed his opinion after authoring an op-ed in The Washington Post two weeks ago against the emergency declaration.

A handful of other senators with potentially competitive races voted against the resolution, including John Cornyn of Texas, Steve Daines of Montana, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia and Dan Sullivan of Alaska.

The ones who voted for it are:

Every Democrat

Lamar Alexander (R-TN) -- Not running for reelection

Roy Blunt (R-MO) -- Reelected in 2016

Susan Collins (R-ME) -- Facing reelection in 2020, so she voted for the resolution to appear "moderate" since she knew it would fail and she wasn't a deciding vote

Mike Lee (R-UT) -- Reelected in 2016

Jerry Moran (R-KS) -- Markot's alter-ego. Reelected in 2016

Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) -- Reelected in 2016

Rand Paul (R-KY) -- Reelected in 2016

Rob Portman (R-OH) -- Reelected in 2016

Mitt Romney (R-UT) -- Elected in 2018

Marco Rubio (R-FL) -- Reelected in 2016

Patrick Toomey (R-PA) -- Reelected in 2016

Roger Wicker (R-MS) -- Reelected in 2016

Only one facing reelection next year voted for it. It looks like not having an election within the next year was actually a bigger motivator for voting for the resolution than having to face reelection, probably because of the primaries.
