GeneticBlueprint
https://www.nj.com/politics/2019/01/nj-democrats-threaten-to-toss-trump-from-the-2020-ballot-if-he-doesnt-release-his-tax-returns.html I don't think this would hold up in even a liberal Supreme Court. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

b_m_b_m_b_m
The only qualifications for President are natural born citizen of 7 (or 14? Can't remember) years and 35 years old. This is something that should somehow be fixed by a constitutional amendment, but it won't happen. There's a house committee going after his returns now so that's our best bet

ThreePi
Wouldn't any state-specific requirement to be on a ballot just set precedent for red States to me completely onerous and arbitrary requirements?

Exactly. Utah will come up with a requirement that you have to be Mormon to be on the ballot. Idaho will demand that you have only eaten freedom fries made from Idaho spuds and never french fries. Texas will require your IQ to be below 75 because they have already set that precedent.

Other measures to qualify someone to be on a ballot are "reasonable" to ensure someone has some support (signature minimums) and can cover the cost of processes involved with putting a name on ballots (fees to file) or are part of a major political party (essentially the support requirement put another way) Requiring tax returns isn't relevant from this perspective. I see this getting thrown out quickly should it pass, as sympathetic as I am to it
