I think with each iteration the characters begin to look a bit more detailed and refined yet retaining the same overall style. It's a style I like and games like Street Fighter like to change the look each time, they all kinda look shitty. What you should be concentrating on is the additions to the fighting system such as the super meter and using meter to get out of counters.
