The book Dune is fantastic.

David Lynch's Dune is a terrible fucking film.

The SyFy TV miniseries is solid but very dated.

I cannot wait for this movie - Dune is one of my favorite properties. Dave Bautista could make a potentially great Rabban. And he already worked with Denis Villeneueve on Blade Runner 2049.

But it's so bad. Not only is it a terrible adaptation of the book, it hasn't aged well at all and the entire movie is just a series of expository scenes (akin to many big budget rushed films, see: Jupiter Ascending, Warcraft) since they are trying to cram an almost 500-page dense novel into one 2-hour film. The film doesn't make you cry or feel much of anything.

The movie is just there. There's a reason David Lynch has disowned the movie. It's because it's terrible.

Dune is so good that even Lynch's film has fans because the source material is just that good but as a film Lynch's Dune is barely watchable. The different characters narrating feelings and thoughts while scenes are playing is probably one of the worst ways to convey information visually ever and that's only second to how stupid Lynch interpreted the Weirding Way combat style with voice box technology. It's a shame because all the pieces were there to make a good movie.

I expected him to be Gurney Halleck (the protagonist's weapons teacher), but Beast Raban makes sense. Villeneuve made great use of Bautista in Blade Runner, so I continue to be hopeful that he'll be the one to get Dune right on screen.

I really liked his admittedly small role in Blade Runner 2049 actually so that's cool. Don't know his wrestling persona etc.

And as a huge David Lynch fan even I agree that his Dune sucks. The whole thing reeks of an artist completely out of his element to the point of being nearly painful to watch. Still shocking to consider he actually recovered from that career-wise.

The book is great.  Actually the first 2 or 3 in the series of books are really good.

But... they have proven hard to film.

I think for this to be successful they need to take a hatchet to the source material.  Don't try to do everything in the book.  Parse it way down and make something that is enjoyable to watch in a 2 hour sitting.  This will piss a bunch of people off but I think it will give a better chance at a quality final product.

And to be clear, otherwise I think Lynch is a fantastic filmmaker. I loved Twin Peaks season 3, for instance, as a recent example.

Denis Villeneueve has already said this will be a 2-part film, so they can do everything in the book. My worry is they are only filming the first part and haven't confirmed the second will be made (it's already been written however). :| It is similar to the situation It: Chapter One was in when it released, but that's a lot more commercial than Denis Villeneueve's Dune will likely be. That's the current word on the street anyway.

Dune is a bad adaption of an overrated book and David Lynch was a poor choice to direct but it's not a bad sci-fi movie on it's own even if much of it makes little sense. The cast is great, the special effects, costumes and set designs are weird and cool which later went on to inspire other productions. The TV mini series is closer to the book and was really boring. The special effects were dated on the date they were made.

I basically like everything Lynch has done minus Dune and Inland Empire, I'm a huge fan. Have read his book, watched his documentaries etc. and I still think Dune is an epic failure, something he himself has talked about frequently. I'm actively dreading the day he shuffles off into the great beyond, there just isn't anyone even remotely anywhere near close to his style.

2-part film, Villeneuve, not-superhero Sci-Fi epic...I'm already betting on part 2 never being made ala Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Sounds fucking awesome to me but alas, people have no interest in that right now.

You really are a dumbass. So much so it's hard to fathom. I can't imagine what your real life must be like if you talk and behave like you do here.

I'm basically a Kyle MacLachlan fan and enjoyed it based on him and that it was kinda a naked lunch prototype. I've never read the book so any comparisons don't matter to me.

I just don't get him. He's vicious, rude, stupid, and has no tact whatsoever. Who wants to deal with that kind of person in real life?

I'd be skeptical if all I knew was his portrayal of Drax (which is great, but is a very small range). But I agree that his small part in BR2049 makes me optimistic.

Well those who randomly lash out on others typically have had some sort of trauma growing up.

I'm not randomly lashing out. I made an assessment of your person based on your post. The evidence is right there.

Not really. I'm talking about a book I don't like and a movie it's based on being enjoyable. You are attempting to analyze my personal life with unprovoked hatred. It's what bullies do. I've never attacked you that I can recall and I'm not attacking you now. I get it. I know trauma. So, I don't know, I just hope you feel better. Peace be with you.

Not sure how I'm attacking you. I genuinely think that was a dumbass post, and then based on all previous posts you've made, most of them have been dumbass posts, so I have concluded that you are a dumbass.

It's not an insult, it's a description of who you are based on the evidence I've seen. If you'd prefer "unintelligent" or "stupid" or whatever word describes such people be my guest. Dumbass is what came to my mind. Not sure how that's bullying or where the hatred is?

I agree you've never "attacked" me, and I'm not trying to "attack" you here.

Lol you're not sure how you attacked him?  He posted his opinion on the book and movie in a pretty unoffensive way and this was your response.  Like, no offense but if you really don't understand how you attacked him or that you did attack him then I think maybe the dumbass lable may have been misplaced.

I haven't heard if they're shooting them back to back. I fear we'll get another modern sci-fi masterpiece that tanks at the box office and then they never make the second part.

If you didn't see the tie in short film (5m), that's also worthwhile.

Because my post goes beyond the confines of stating something as asinine as Dune is an overrated book, which is just the latest instance of.

lol right, you called him a dumbass because he doesn't like Dune?  Wanna know a secret, I read Dune and didn't get the hype either.  You attacked him for having a differing opinion than you.

No, as I said, it was the latest instance in a long line of posts that have indicated that conclusion from me. Just because it happened with something more benign is irrelevant.

There's nothing outlandish stating Dune is overrated. it's just as common as saying it's great. People have been saying it for years. It's just an opinion. If you don't agree with that opinion then say so and move on. No need to get personal. Peace be with you.
