Surviving R. Kelly

Hes free because he has fans who would rather defend him on the basis of race being the reason the false charges are made to oppress him, and because the legal game delayed the trials long enough for the information to be muddled

That's part of it... he's really free because unlike Cosby, he didn't victimize any white girls and limited his predation to little black and hispanic girls. If he had even ONE white victim, it wouldn't have mattered WHAT his fans thought. One of the jurors in the trial, who was interviewed for this doc, said on camera that he didn't believe the victims who testified and didn't "like the way they dressed" so he discounted their testimony entirely. This particular juror wasn't black and definitely wasn't "a fan".

Its crazy that within a community its better to be loyal to a celeb from your race than to someone like yourself (economy wise)  or your community...

those girls were so young and they are right in saying time was the most helpful ally... if u wait 5 years u get a 19 year old on the stands instead of someone who is 14...

its crazy that they even have a video on him yet its not enough (threw brother under bus)

They don't even have to be a celebrity. There was a case here several years ago where a black guy raped and murdered a news anchor. It made national headlines. He was convicted of that one. However, when he went to trial for another rape, the jury hung on conviction. It split straight down racial lines. DNA evidence proved the man raped the woman, but the black jurors refused to convict. That's messed up. And prosecutors say this isn't the first time this has happened. https://www.arktimes.com/arkansas/lee-county-justice/Content?oid=1604248

At least the scumbag is serving life without parole, but it sucks his other victim couldn't get her justice.

I dont doubt this.. thats why the argument of quotas and affirmative action and all that crap is so frustrating....

All sides have the argument that they have to balance the bias BS from the other side.... then its a fight of what tribe u want to be loyal to? Black, white, gay, straight, rich, poor, male, female? Never truth or actual facts.... plus the current climate has malicious folks testing the limits of how much depravity we can get away with

Stockholm Syndrome is one hell of a mental state.

It still baffles the hell out of me... not all of the women he manipulated were underage. His wife wasn't and another woman was 35 when they met. Glad they all eventually came to their senses and got out of it, but he really was running a damn abusive cult. He still has two women in his clutches according to the doc that haven't seen their families in years. Craziness.

Fighting against instititutionalized racism over centuries with things like affirmative action make a huge amount of sense.

Illogically backing someone just because they happen to be the same race as you when they are clearly in the wrong is not connected to that at all, and is stupid wherever it occurs and whatever race is doing it.

It make "sense" if one views it as what amounts to a "revolutionary act" against a justice system that has denied justice through the convictions of innocent African Americans and/or the acquittal of blatantly guilty Caucasian Americans through its systemic/institutional biases.

Sometimes two "wrongs" do make a "right".

Who has accepted him as a funny meme guy? He's been virtually ostracized,  is broke and will probably be facing jail time.

His stupid In The Closet video etc., Lady Gaga did a track with him and so on. Maybe lately, but he was considered a funny throwback kind of novelty for quite some time.

Lady Gaga did a song with him??? Did not know that. The documentary touches on how he almost reahabilitated his image after his acquittal.

What I described is essentially what happened with the OJ Simpson verdict which (at least for some jurors) became "political retaliation" for the acquittal of the white LAPD officers in the Rodney King case.

Preach... I thought OJ was guilty as fuck, still do. But OJ was retaliation for Rodney King and a whole host of other shit the LAPD was known for. One of the most racist and corrupt police departments in the history of the country prior to the Rampart scandal.

Unless of course youre on the end of one of the "wrongs" that makes a "right"...

Im sure some folks thought the attack on Reginald Denny was a justified "right" when balanced against a history of "wrongs"...

All the same its not as if there will ever be real balance.. its frustrating above all things..

Hell,  im sure some view R Kelly avoiding "justice" as a justified right because of the society whom we view as his potential jailers..

Saw a headline saying his music sales and streaming numbers are up since the documentary aired. Curious people? Or maybe the old saying "there's no such thing as bad publicity".

Whatever the most cynical take is, go with that, it's most certainly reality.

We live in fucked up times where celebrity> morality/reality and because of the internet,  cognitive dissonance has reached epidemic proportions?

Why was that a question in response to what I said haha?

Edit: I have no fucking clue what "cognitive dissonance" means by the way, not gonna even pretend and I'm too lazy to google.

Because of the question mark, I read it in a bitchy 90's Valley Girl voice somehow.

That's kinda the tone I was using in my head when I was typing it... :p

The response of some black folks to black men who are clearly guilty is absolutely in response to being under the unjust yoke of the criminal justice system in this nation for its entirety. It’s a sad situation because the response to injustice shouldn’t be more injustice, but it is understandable that a black person who has quite likely at minimum known a friend or family member abused by our justice system would feel good about undermining it when they get the chance.

An old coworker went to college in Chicago, and knew some women who were invited to his house for an after-party...Nothing ominous happened to them, but apparently the only things in his fridge are expensive vodka and kids food (chicken nuggets, popsicles, juice boxes, etc.), and that is literally all he eats.

The behavior is explainable but I don't know if it's understandable. I'm Pakistani and Muslim and brown in America and I would never do what you've outlined. I understand their anger but I do not understand the follow through in making a huge, obvious mistake.

The main ones that continue to defend R Kelly ironically are black female fans.  Black guys have no problem calling him a piece of shit.

I've been calling him a piece of shit since all this came out... I have several female friends and family members who defended the fuck out of him back then.

1. I think these things are synonyms

2. and get out of town with the notion that Pakistani Muslims have had remotely similar experiences with the American criminal justice system as black people in this country. There is literally an amendment to the constiution that was created to ensure black people could still be enslaved post emancipation. It’s not the same thing as the general awfulness to other brown people groups. The criminal justice system is designed to harm black people specifically.

I still love you <3
