Blade Runner 2049: As a massive fan of the original, I finally mustered the courage to watch it

Blade Runner has been one of my favorite films for...who knows how long. I re-watch it probably once a year at this point and it transcends being merely a movie and I just enjoy "spending time" with it, I like visiting that unique world beyond any potential script short-comings and faults and so on.

With that in mind, I've honestly somewhat avoided watching 2049. I skipped it in the theater, then never watched my purchased copy until just now. I should add I also just acquired soundbar setup with rear speakers etc. and with Xmas day being slow and lazy, I figured the time was right to face the reality of a sequel I had low expectations of simply due to my love of the original.

Well, I fucking loved it, I really did. If I'd had the time, I would've watched it again immediately. It essentially beautifully avoided every sequel ailment I was worried about and felt truly inspired on every level. Surely it's not perfect, neither is the original, but for me it really expanded, and built on, the universe in meaningful ways and never felt like a senseless nostalgia lulz-80's-guys trip which would've been the easier route surely.

I had seen many criticisms in regards to its pacing and was expecting some screen molasses but thought it moved at a completely appropriate pace for its general atmosphere and themes.

Visuals and soundtrack are really phenomenal and worth re-watching just for that already. I usually tend to have to watch films I actually like at least twice to truly comment on its ideas and themes because I tend to be caught up on my initial viewings if I really like something. That being said, everything I did catch and understand was fantastic in context with the Blade Runner universe.

Denis Villeneuve has been my favorite current director for some years now, especially him and the Deakins combined, but goddamn, what a string of winners. I wanted to give these two glorious motherfuckers a standing ovation after this one.

You made a mistake by avoiding it cause you would have loved it even more watching it on IMAX :P it was amazing

I completely agree. I always do dickhead stuff like this...I blame it on being essentially Eastern European. It's that Russian indoctrination I had to endure!!!

It's one of my favorites from the last few years and is probably the high water mark for sequels that come decades later. Fury Road would be up there, but it's essentially a reboot, where as 2049 continues with the characters and themes in ways that actually enhance the original. It gives me great hope that Denis will be the one to finally get Dune right on screen.

I'm actually already looking forward to re-visiting the original once again now with the information I learned in 2049. I'm glad they never got bogged down in some lame pseudo-science for the child birth.
