Trump ‘at this moment’ opposes deal to avert shutdown, wants more border funding

That number likely won't be so slow and linear once people start missing tax returns and food stamps.

That number also probably doesn't reflect hundreds of thousands of people getting a paycheck with a big donut on it on Friday yet. I'd imagine something like starts to make shit feel real even for Trump followers.

Sorry if posted. I'm losing track as to where I'm seeing things. :p

"You could give me a trillion dollars and I wouldn't take it," said Cavazos, whose land sits along the Rio Grande, the river separating the U.S. and Mexico in Texas. "It's not about money."

The government sued the local Roman Catholic diocese late last year to gain access for its surveyors at the site of La Lomita chapel, which opened in 1865 and was an important site for missionaries who traveled the Rio Grande Valley by horseback.

It remains an epicenter of the Rio Grande Valley's Catholic community, hosting weddings and funerals, as well as an annual Palm Sunday procession that draws 2,000 people.

...

The diocese said it opposes a border wall because the barrier violates Catholic teachings and the church's responsibility to protect migrants, as well as the church's First Amendment right of religious freedom. A legal group from Georgetown University has joined the diocese in its lawsuit.

Father Roy Snipes leads prayers each Friday for his chapel to be spared. Wearing a cowboy hat with his white robe and metal cross, he's known locally as the "cowboy priest" and sometimes takes a boat on the Rio Grande to go from his home to the chapel.

"It would poison the water," Snipes said. "It would still be a sacred place, but it would be a sacred place that was desecrated."

It's unfortunate for Trump that he said on live TV that he'll take credit for the shutdown and won't blame Democrats.

I guess it's well-deserved, though, that the public blames the Republicans for almost every shutdown instead of BoTh SiDeS.

So Trump quoted Pat Buchanan on the wall:

Hmmm, quoting Pat Buchanan. Let's see what Pat's intentions are, courtesy of this quote from Donald J Trump:

Quote

“Look, he’s a Hitler lover,” Trump said on “Meet the Press” in 1999. “I guess he’s an anti-Semite. He doesn’t like the blacks. He doesn’t like the gays. It’s just incredible that anybody could embrace this guy.”

Compelled to work without pay, federal employees sue Trump, accusing him of violating 13th Amendment

Quote

The four plaintiffs, who are from Texas and West Virginia, work for the departments of Justice, Agriculture and Transportation; one is an air traffic controller. The lawsuit also claims violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, among other statutes.

“Our plaintiffs find themselves in the exact same boat as virtually every other furloughed federal employee: bills to pay and no income to pay them,” the workers' attorney, Michael Kator, told The Washington Post via email. “As this drags on, their situation will become more and more dire.”

According to the lawsuit, if the employees don’t report to work, they could face discipline or removal. The suit claims that this amounts to a form of coercion barred by the 13th Amendment.

Quote

The 13th Amendment argument may face an uphill battle, though. Michael LeRoy, a law professor specializing in labor and employment law at the University of Illinois, said that the standard for meeting the definition of involuntary servitude is extremely high. “The courts have a very narrow perception of it,” he said. “Courts don’t tend to view pressure as coercion.”

For example, the Supreme Court held in 1988 that pushing mentally disabled men to work on a farm for no wages by threat of institutionalization did not amount to involuntary servitude, because “psychological coercion” isn’t covered under the amendment. For similar reasons, circuit courts have held that threatening unpaid or underpaid migrant workers with deportation is not involuntary servitude. Teenagers forced to complete mandatory community service as a condition of graduation also isn’t involuntary servitude, as many disgruntled parents have tried to argue in court. And forcing an impoverished man who couldn’t afford a $3 tax to perform compulsory road work as an alternative also is not involuntary servitude, the Supreme Court ruled in 1916.

The beauty is that Trump has trained his little minions to be so bitter and unreasonable that even if he gives in because they're mad they aren't getting their food stamps they'll hate him for getting cucked into backing down.

He painted himself into the ultimate inescapable corner. If Dems are smart enough to hold the line.
