The funny thing is that $5 billion is nothing, and the Democrats would have gladly given it to him for any compromise

The sad thing is that this shutdown is becoming a battle of principles.

And the Republicans are relying on the other side to blink simply for the fact that Democrats are the party in favor of some barest amount of effort to actually govern.

The Republicans see a willingness to do their fucking job as a weakness to be exploited.

Would they? This is more than just the amount of money. A lot of people on the left would be pissed off if that happened. I don’t see how it could be justified unless trump gave them something major.

They've voted for it in the past, the problem is the conservative wing of the GOP is a bunch of retards that has and is hamstringing the GOPs ability to govern and flat out refuses any sort of compromise.

Maybe the government put them under the Department of the Navy?  That's where the Coast Guard is during war time.

That's the only solution I can think of. Though possibly illegal post Goldwater. Secretary of the Navy can't issue operational orders, nor can the Commandant of the Coast Guard since he be on the Joint Chiefs. They'd have to take the Coast Guard's two 3-star Area Commands (Atlantic and Pacific) and somehow put them under US Northern Command (via Fleet Forces Command?) and some of the Pacific Area's western Sectors would need to go to US Pacific Command (via Pacific Fleet?). Then we're in to violating Posse Comitatus Act territory since the Area and Sector Commanders would report to Title X Generals and Admirals.

Assuming they do it anyway, where the hell is DoD and DoN going to get the money to run a 42,000 person payroll?

Happy last 2 days Mattis!

No I mean, if no one is willing to confirm it, or put their name on it, did it actually happen or did they make the whole thing up and the coast guard isn't getting paid?
