Remedy gets weird again

I missed Remedy’s weirdness in Quantum Break, so the idea of the studio doubling down on it in Control is exciting. The Oldest House is an unpredictable setting, giving the team an opportunity to flex its imagination. The roots of Remedy are still there—namely elaborate, cinematic gun combat—but it’s good to see the designers and writers experimenting with something more open-ended. I don’t know what other secrets and artefacts are waiting to be discovered in the Oldest House, but I can’t wait to find out. Just don’t look away from the fridge.

I'm curious - could you elaborate on that?

I suspect he means they do a lot to make these unique worlds and in them you kinda just shoot everyone and everything. in the process they shoot through their own narrative. You know, the second definition of "Bullet Time"! :p

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Oh, if that's the case then I'm in somewhat agreement with that!  I really would love to see Remedy make a "combatless" game.

There was more to the gameplay of Quantum Break than shooting stuff.

Agreed, but not much. For me the best part of QB was their attempt to try something different. It didn't always work, but I think it all jelled in the very latest levels. Unfortunately there was that last fight. :nottalking:

I just beat the game recently... what was so egregious about the last boss fight? I beat him kinda easily.

There was a bug where you could be insta-killed ANYWHERE on the board. Mind you I'm not talking about the build up orange areas that clearly indicated that "if you stand here to long you will die". Best part was, it didn't have a rhythm. Took me 6+ tries to clear it.

Damn... glad I didn't run into that.

4K version:

Quote

The World of Control:

"August 4, 1964. Bureau Agents discovered the Oldest House, investigating an Altered World Event case in the New York City Subway tunnels. It's a place of power. From the outside it looks like an ordinary building, a Brutalist skyscraper, but inside it breaks the laws of our reality, unstable, mad and shifting. There are rooms in the building, where other dimensions leak in. We call these rooms Thresholds.

There is a connection between our minds and the unknown, often hostile, forces intruding on our world. These forces gravitate toward everyday objects: a gun, a television, a house with a reputation of being haunted. So, somehow, we affect these events. We're holding the key but we don't have a clue on how to use it.

But there's something in us, in the dreams we dream, in the conceptual reality we power with our minds. What's the cause and what's the effect? Are we the starting point, or just a necessary evil in this? We're dealing with dangerous, unknown forces here. We're on a mission to find answers to these questions... or we die trying.

This is Zachariah Trench, The director of the Federal Bureau of Control."

How was Quantum Break's gameplay anyway? I know it was like half an interactive movie or some shit which is why I never picked it up, but how were the core mechanics when it did let you play?

I tried to replay Alan Wake recently and just couldn't get that far. The gameplay is pretty close to dreadful and I already had the 'experience' twice when it came out.

Hoping this game delivers more than style, I'm actually interested and the gameplay videos did look cool.

It was solid. The physics/time powers made for some pretty cool battles. The gunplay didn’t blow me away but it was enjoyable enough and I never found myself just waiting for the fight to be over like when I play GTA or Uncharted.

Lol and it wasn’t half movie. It was episodic like Alan Wake. And in between episodes they had a TV episode using the actors from the game that could change based on actions you took during the previous chapter. I think you could turn them off and never see them if you wanted though.

I got the impression it was cutscene central or some other shit. What's the gameplay to having-to-watch ratio?

It’s been awhile since I played it so I can’t remember how many actual cut scenes there are. It’s def above average but I don’t remember it being MGS bad.

These are legit Television episodes, so they are about 20 minutes long. There's only four or five episodes though and you can skip them if you want. Like @Mercury33 it's nothing like MGS.
