On Sunday night, Harris announced his departure from Patreon, where he was one of the top-ranked creators, because the service has expelled several people with whom he does not agree. Among them: feminism and “identity politics” critic Carl Benjamin (aka Sargon of Akkad), former Students for Trump adviser James Allsup, and all-around political bomb thrower Milo Yiannopoulos.

Carl Benjamin is also too racist for the UK Independence Party

But slavery is hardly the root cause of America’s prosperity. If it were, then we would expect American states that practiced slavery to be richer than those that did not. Yet we see precisely the opposite. The South, where slavery thrived, was “the poorest and most backward region of the country,” according to the economist Thomas Sowell. This remains true today. A recent analysis of census data found that Northeastern states, which forbade slavery, “are among the wealthiest,” whereas “states in the Southeast are among the poorest.” Nor is the disconnect between slavery and wealth unique to America. Similar disparities have emerged in Brazil, where the formerly abolitionist southern region has been, and continues to be, wealthier than the formerly slave-owning northern region.

I can't imagine making that argument with a straight face.

anyways the author will likely regret the article in a few years and adopt left leaning politics

I could because it’s fact.  Your feelings aren’t fact.

Slavery is not the ROOT cause of American prosperity.

Its certainly played a role and the author readily admits it as does SH.

okay ben shapiro

it's hilarious what has happened to the atheist/skeptic community

No? What’s funny (quite sad actually) is just how fucked up the far left has become, especially when it comes to speech and labeling every one a racist.

If you support someones right to free speech (even when you don’t agree with what they have to say) then you too must be racist.

deplatforming is extremely good, and any decent platform should ban people like Milo and Carlgon

It's also funny how the free speech warriors only get upset when rich and/or rightwing guys are mildly inconvenienced but then have nothing say about a situation like the J20 protesters arrested and charged bullshit felonies

let me ask you an honest question.  do you think Fox News should be deplatformed?

I know you were not asking me, but I'll take a crack at it.

The issue with "deplatforming" a television channel is that what you're talking about is either publicly owned airwaves (in the case of broadcast TV) or cable/satellite/etc providers (in the case of cable channels). In the case of the former, due to the unique nature of public television broadcasts, and the fact that they're being distributed over public airwaves, I think preventing a given network from using it would be a clear first amendment issue.

When it comes to the second, I don't think there's there's a real issue, though I do think it can get a little complicated. On the one hand, it's already the case that not every provider carries every channel. Even setting packages aside, there are some channels that are just not available on some providers, and that's not an issue. So if providers decided to not carry Fox News out of editorial concern, I don't think there's a huge issue there. All else being equal, I'd choose a cable provider that didn't carry Fox News over one that did.

The caveat to that is if there is a question of availability for alternative providers. If local cable and television providers in a given area are effective local monopolies, then I think it might be more questionable. Legally I don't think it actually matters, and they can do as they like, but as someone that cares very much about ISP monopolies, I think this could carry similar issues.

Now if the question is would I like to see them get deplatformed, then the answer is yes.

Our current system:  most people live paycheck to paycheck and a very small number of people control a huge portion of the wealth

Sam Harris fans love their racist hero

I mean, it’s not like we went over this lazy practice of telling people they’re racists if they don’t agree with your outlandish views.

Why debate the issues when you can just tell someone they’re racist without evidence to back it up.

Grow up
