Halloween was great.  If you think otherwise you're stupid and I hate you.

 That's fucking harsh.

Turns out I thought it was fantastic! So good, 10/10! Definitely "this generation's Halloween 1". John Carpenter's a fucking hack compared to this auteur-of-auteurs! As a matter of fact, had I not known otherwise, I would've assumed this to have been directed by Stanley Kubrick with Hitchcock as DP and Fritz Lang as co-director.

Carpenter actually enjoyed the film and will return to score the sequel so...

Quote

In a recent interview, John Carpenter was asked about returning to compose the score for a new Halloween. The composer/director reveals that he loves what David Gordon Green and Danny McBride pulled off and that he'd be happy to return. He says, "We'll be ready. We've all talked about it. We'll be ready." While Carpenter has talked about it, it's not clear whether or not Green and McBride will be on hand for the sequel, though they have announced that they already have ideas.

John Carpenter's senile, he probably watched his original accidentally and responded to that.

Now you’ve gone too far

I don't know what I hate more, that Arch-Hipster himself or his smug NPR listening fan base.

If I ever become a dictator, which is more than likely, I will immediately hold a Berlin style Wes Anderson Film burning. Anyone involved in the making of The Royal Tenenbaums will be sentenced to 10+ years of hard labor by default.

No shit--and I'm sure Ridley Scott thinks Covenant is the best Alien movie he's ever worked on.

Halloween was a fantastic homage to previous entries, a very well produced film, but an absolute shit horror movie.

The FUCK does Ridley Scott have to do with this?  @Bloodporne brought Carpenter into this conversation number one, and number TWO  Carpenter isn't patting himself on the back for the movie... he's giving credit where credit is due to the guys for making a worthy successor to HIS film. Now because his views don't line up with you guys', his opinions don't count?  Then why was he brought into the conversation? You guys crack me up for real...

How can one man be so right about a TV show and so wrong about a movie.  Mind blowing haha

Like almost every other horror movie ever made? It's inherent to the genre. And I'm still trying to figure out what the characters in THIS film did that was so offensively stupid to folks.

Most other horror movies are shit, too. Other genres are held to a higher standard, horror should be as well.

Halloween has RotS level of egregious stupidity.

Horror should be held to a higher standard. Halloween 2018 has some great scenes but also mind boggling dumb decisions that only exist because they had to figure out how to go from beginning to end and it’s like they threw some characters and events in there for the fuck of it and didn’t stop to think of what they were doing made sense. It’s true, A LOT of horror movies do this. I’m not saying it needs to be held to the standard of a grounded drama movie, but at least make story decisions in your world that make sense.

The worst thing you can say about Hereditary is the jump in what happens in the climax not being what happened the rest of the movie but it at least makes sense within what was happening in the movie and its progression.

I dont think trope-y horror is that bad. It can be enjoyed just like a meaningless comedy can be. But I want more horror with Hereditary’s quality.

You're taking my comments way too seriously, I was just fucking around.

To be serious in regards to any film opinions I throw out there...I'm not saying it's objectively true and the films are bad per say, that's just my take and I love absurd and crass humor. I don't actually fucking thing Carpenter is senile and/or doesn't have the right to think it's a great flick and make twenty sequels, go to town. He created some of my favorites movies, and especially Horror, he can do and say whatever he wants. I have immense respect for Carpenter especially as a person. The man always said and did exactly what he wanted despite the studio system, that takes balls.

On another note, I saw him live actually last year and it was killer. I'm a huge fan of his last two 'solo' albums, especially the first one. It's truly great.

That all being said, in my opinion his opinion on the new Halloween sucks balls and I think it's a corny ass movie even if Carpenter personally told me to my face it's the best Halloween ever. Just because every entry since the very original sucked doesn't make this any less crappy for me.

What truly bothered me about Halloween, and why I call it shitty fan fiction, is the constant need to skirt any semi-logical reaction by its characters in order to get in a "wink wink you like that call-back, sick right!?" moment for the audience. I absolutely loathe that shit unless it's in Scream films or something equally silly. It's a giant hype fest of "fan favorites" beats and I think that's so insanely corny especially when you're going to market this as some sort of return to form thing. It undercut the movie at the knees and made it a farce from the get-go for me. It was tonally inconsistent to the 9th degree and seemingly had no idea what it actually wanted to be outside of nudging fans in the side every five seconds. Again, we've had like 98273984739473 shitty Halloween flicks that did this, can't we have one that's not just insipid fan service?

I'm not a fan of movie franchises, I'm a fan of great movies. Jamie Lee Curtis showing up means nothing to me if the flick isn't worth a shit, Pinhead showing up in a Hellraiser movie means zero to me if it's a shit movie and so forth. It's a marketing gimmick and nothing else.

We don't have to get into it, but I think Wes Anderson movies are pretty good (not amazing or anything though), and my wife (an actress and director) is partially in the business because of Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums.

I agree with your criticism that he's "hipster", but his tone and family drama definitely resonate with me and my wife. You'd probably like his stop-motion films more if you haven't seen them since his directorial style is less hipster in animated form.

Haha what are the odds!

My wife actually loves Wes Anderson's films and I've had to see most of them several times over.

Haha well at least you've tried by having seen them a few times - much credit to you. :p

I've seen Darjeeling a minimum of four times and it's an absolutely harrowing experience each time. I truly enjoy the setting, sets/locations, it's beautiful especially because India is a relative mystery to me, but by god...I just cannot handle his writing and the actors.
