The Worst Films of 2018

Recommended Posts

List seems pretty accurate based on reviews I've seen when these movies came out and aggregate ratings websites, but putting Sicario: Day of the Soldado on there is ridiculous. That was a great movie that just wasn't as good as the fantastic original. The mid-film action sequence is balls-out amazing.

Yes, it's a cynical and ugly film (philosophically), but that's entirely the point. It's ridiculous to put it on a "worst of" list.

Dont think I’ve seen a 2018 film but it’s nice they finally realized Sicario is a bad movie.

i wouldn't say it's bad, but I DEFINITELY didn't get the hype for it. I thought it was a well made action movie... not whatever the fuck the critics made it out to be.

oh and I DID see one of the movies on the list... MUTE. It was so bad I forgot I saw it until I read the description:p

The only movie on this list I saw is Death Wish.

First off it was a bad movie.  But the reason it was bad was that it was poorly directed and Bruce pretty much mailed it in (as he has done in most movies in the past decade).

I don't really understand why this movie in particular gets all the PC hate.  There are hundreds of movies that have the plot line of someone's family member gets hurt or killed and revenge gets taken by the protagonist.  Most of those movies have guns in them too.  So I just don't get why everyone agreed to hate on this movie for those reasons as opposed to say John Wick, or Django, or Kill Bill, or Taken etc........

Because Death Wish feeds into the whole right wing fantasy of "all it takes to stop crime is a gun and the will to use it." I don't know about this new movie, but in the original Death Wish,  Paul Kerse was just a regular dude... not a trained Assasain or C.I. A. agent or cowboy. Just a normal everyday guy. The only thing Death Wish has in common with the other films you named (which are all larger than life action fables) is that it has a protagonist who uses guns and in the case of these movies, the use of guns isn't the issue. It's when philospohy and politics behind the movie that is problematic. Again i haven't seen the movie so maybe it does some things that make you think, but given Eli Roth's track record, I highly doubt it :p

I've only seen the following from that list:

Mute

It was a monumentally huge piece of shit. Shockingly fucking bad level. Whatever is above that, I can't even imagine being more inept, insipidly stupid and boring than that. It's like a workshop on how not to make a movie, ever.

I can't get myself to watch Sicario 2. I loved the first one and I already know this isn't the sequel I'm remotely interested in.

It's solely written by the guy who solely wrote the first one, Taylor Sheridan (also responsible for solely writing both the stellar Hell or High Water and Wind River) and stars two fantastic actors willing to reprise their iconic roles from the first film, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro (actors I'm sure who wouldn't come back after such an excellent first film if they felt the sequel was going to be shitty). The first 5 minutes are WTF racist and have no bearing on the rest of the film, but the rest of the movie is actually quite good, I've seen it twice.

It's not close to the first one, but it's still a good movie and a worthy sequel if there had to be one. Taylor Sheridan didn't just suddenly write a terrible movie after writing three fantastic ones.

I know I'm alone with this one but I found Hereditary to be quite memorably bad. Nowhere near the 'worst of 2018' but it certainly left a 'yeah, no thanks' impression on me. I recoil every time I see the cover in the store.

I watched Hereditary with my wife, my parents, and my brothers, and I know all the reviews and accolades it has gotten, but I just found it to be solid/okay. The rest of my family hated it. Not sure where all the love is coming from for that film. The direction was pretty good but the story was ludicrous.

I just don't see the line that you see.  After watching this movie I don't know what got so many riled up about it's portrayal of a vigilante but all others seem to be okay.  I'm not defending anything... I'm not a big gun proponent or anything.  I try to stay away from most politics usually.

I haven't seen the film yet so maybe they did go more the "traditional action movie" route. it's on cable now so I'll check it out at some point.

Hereditary suffers from that edgier-than-thou nonsense 3rd act that a vast majority of Indie Horror flicks have been suffering from for years. Trying to subvert genre cliches by plunging their plots off 'betcha didn't see that coming!' cliffs in the 3rd act.

I honestly thought it was a very interesting film up until that point but it predictably drove itself right into a wall of complete silly stupidity in its last act. Just didn't work for me at all. Hated it as much as some of you hated The Witch.

@Greatoneshere Sicario was made for me by the cinematography and overall otherworldly presentation of its material. The writing was good, but not what I truly loved about it. That's why the second one doesn't interest me one iota with Deakins and Villeneuve gone. It was an auteur film 70's New Hollywood style in my eyes and that's what I loved about it. The poster for the second one alone makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

@Emblazon Halloween was an obnoxious, inconsistent and lukewarm-at-best piece of fan fiction as far as I'm concerned. I've never seen so many people in a movie theater at once grow increasingly impatient and then spiteful towards a movie.

The Witch was legit good, really eerie film with a fantastic twist in the third act. Much better than Hereditary to me.

I am with you about Sicario. Sicario 2 is not Sicario - and I loved the first film for all the same reasons you did (and the second film does, to some degree, lack the things you loved about the first Sicario). But it's still a good movie in its own right in my opinion. I will say the marketing and posters for the film are not representative of the film itself, which has more nuance. :)

Marketing was like Call Of Duty level. If you have a bro beard and fauxhawk, check this shit!!!

I'm in the pro-Hereditary camp, if we're drawing battle lines. :p

It kinda lost me

Spoiler

towards the very end, with Toni Collette scurrying around on the ceiling and then the boy floating up to the treehouse and all that

But the rest of it really worked on me, to the point where I was glad I had seen it during an early matinee and I was able to walk into daylight.

You’re a fucking psycho and should be forced to Pet and feed your horse in RDR2 for 48 straight hours if you think Hereditary was less than good.

That's fucking harsh.

Turns out I thought it was fantastic! So good, 10/10! Definitely "this generation's Exorcist". William Friedkin's a fucking hack compared to this auteur-of-auteurs! As a matter of fact, had I not known otherwise, I would've assumed this to have been directed by Stanley Kubrick with Hitchcock as DP and Fritz Lang as co-director.
