EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios is fast-tracking Shang-Chi to be its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. The studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvel’s first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. That film tied into African and African American cultures and the sensibilities of its nearly all-black cast, with a black director in Ryan Coogler and writer in Joe Robert Cole. The goal here is to do a similar thing: introduce a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers.

Cool.

Shang Chi has a tremendous cult following so I'm not surprised to see him get the live action treatment. I'm more surprised to see it as a big budget film rather than a series. They are gonna have to power him up a bit though... basically make him Marvel's Goku and give him a bunch of Chi-based powers.  They could tie him into Doc Strange's corner of the MCU.

Curious to see what they do with him.

Marvel’s take on a large budget, Kung fu movie would be interesting. Has a major American studio released a big martial arts movie anytime recently?

Not that I can think of... Into The Badlands is on TV and Warrior is coming to Cinemax. There's quite a few martial arts projects coming to the small screen.

Marvel Studios is setting Destin Daniel Cretton to direct Shang-Chi, its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. Cretton is directing Just Mercy, a film he wrote that stars Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan.

This is in keeping with the studio’s goal to take this in a direction like Black Panther, and populate it with Asian-American talent. When Deadline first revealed the project late last year, the studio had set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay.

Black Panther provided a watershed template for how to do this, making a film that tied into African and African American cultures and the sensibilities of its nearly all-black cast, with a black director in Ryan Coogler and writer in Joe Robert Cole. The film got a Best Picture Oscar nomination and won three Oscars, in addition to grossing $1.3 billion worldwide. It is clear that after Marvel Studios’ unparalleled decade of success following Iron Man, Kevin Feige’s next iterations of superhero franchises will distinguish themselves with ethnic diversity and inclusion, in front of and behind the camera.

Here's your first look at Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Tony Leung in Marvel's 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.'

TIL I’ve been pronouncing the character’s name wrong my whole life, whiteness level 1000000000/10 confirmed. Sigh.

Yup I'm in... casting Shang Chi as someone who at least LOOKS like he can fight was brilliant.  Hopefully they can redo my man Iron Fist as well.

I don't know how much of this is Finn Jones' fault. Iron Fist had bad writing, bad directing, and awful choreography from top to bottom. There were a couple of highlights here and there, but nothing about how the series was structured was any good. Contrast that with how everyone involved with Jessica Jones made Krysten Ritter an honest bad ass that was believable scary. Then again, Ritter is also a great actress here. I remember when my wife watching an episode of Jimmy Kimmel's show with her and was shocked at how much of a softy valley girl she was compared to her acting in Jessica Jones.

Well fuck me running, that makes 2 of us then! Damn.

Admittedly, I am not fully aware of much of Chi's character. Watching the trailer, while moderately entertaining, in terms of the "bang, pow, boom" of the martial arts, I feel that between Mortal Kombat & Snake Eyes, I will get that fight itch scratched with characters I know & love much more. That isn't to say that I am not going to see this as well, just a bit more of a wait & see type of approach at the moment.
