Flash Gordon 4k

Cult Classic with a 4k resto done for the films 40th anniversary .

Visuals : Studio Canal really outdid themselves on this one. The sets and wardrobe look so fantastic , all the hard work put into them was really lost until now.

Audio: A little on the bland side

Its LSD infused space fantasy that captures the Flash Gordon spirit.

Nim's Island: 6/10 - A bit of a fantastical film. Maybe a too much going on, so many layers. You can mark this down as a Gerard Butler movie that doesn't suck. However, @Greatoneshere wants to talk editing this film has a couple of fantastic scenes with parallel editing done by the great Stuart Levy ACE probably best known for his work on Any Given Sunday. :o

I love Any Given Sunday's editing. Man is awesome! I haven't seen Nim's Island but I have heard it is a good Gerard Butler movie, which is always nice.

Arrival: 8/10 - I enjoyed it. Louis Lane and Hawkeye learn an alien language. However, I'm getting kind of tired of the human response to every alien movie is "We gotta kill em!"

I could be wrong but isn’t Amy Adams the only one who really learns the language?

Spoiler

Because she’s the one who sees time the way the aliens did, and Jeremy Renner’s character leaves her over the stuff that she told him about the future.

anyways, I really like this movie

Amadeus 4.5/5

i avoided this for a while because I was never in the mood for a 3 hour movie about Mozart but it’s way better than I was expecting. Love how the movie is told by Salieri.

When I was 14, at the end of the year our music teacher (in school) put it on for the 80 minute lesson. Had to go into town on the weekend to buy it, very enjoyable, though not so factual movie.

Zombie 4k

ZOMBIE New Sealed 4K Ultra HD UHD Lucio Fulci Zombi 2

The film was one of the 72 Video Nasties of the 80's and was prosecuted due to the violence and gore.

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls051364249/

The film is about a women and a reporter who travel to a tropical island after an "empty" boat appears in NYC belonging to the women father. They soon find out the island is "cursed" . This film was supposed to be the Dawn Of The Dead 2 but as much as I enjoy Fulci and this film itss very subpar compared to Romero's classic. Romero has never been subtle but in this case he is scalpel compared to Fulci brick to the face approach. Romeros film centered around the recently deceased , Zombi used a both the recent and the long dead so he loved to include insects like maggots to up the gore factor.

This really is more of a party flick then Romero's , I enjoy it more when you can laugh at the dubbing, wince at the gore and grin at the 70's titty shots with others.

Video: Its a 5/5. Companies need to look at Blue when they need a film remastered at 4k. It is a pristine transfer, the HDR adds just a touch of clarity to some shots.

Sound: 4/5 The Atmos track is great but the original 1.0 is good too

Interstellar - I was really disappointed with this movie when I first saw, but I've rewatched it a couple of times, and with each viewing I appreciate it much more, to the point that it's pretty much a 10/10 in my book. It is a literal crime that Zimmer's score didn't win the Oscar.

I agree with a lot of this. Shame about Zimmer but the odds were in Desplat's favor.

I feel the same. When you get past how stupid the plot gets as the movie goes on, its a beautiful, emotional, roller coaster of a film.

Interstellar turned out to be one of my favorite movies of the past decade after several viewings. Like you said, it's really just such a beautiful movie where emotion and, I don't know if this makes sense, movement trump any plot holes for me. What I mean by that is that the score especially gives the entire thing such an emotional momentum that I never worry about the details just because it feels like the atmosphere washes over me instead. It's a gorgeous film all around.

Edit: Also, I absolutely love the inclusion of church organs in the soundtrack, that was a stroke of genius.

What I did during this viewing was simply not worry about the science. Crucially, I paid attention to all of the jargon-laden exposition, but didn't stop to think "wait, is that how gravity/time/wormholes/black holes actually work? Does any of this make any sense?" I accepted whatever they said as truth and just rolled with it. When I did that, I was kind of amazed at how much (almost) everything tracked according to the rules they set up.

And when I stopped worrying about that, I was able to focus more on the artistry and emotion on display, and it was almost overwhelming. That black hole climax was no longer a confusing jumble of sci-fi BS, but a visually stunning combination of the two strongest forces we know: love and gravity.

I mean, the plot makes sense, it's just stupid. I love the movie, but the Honest Trailers for this film is particularly on point in explaining the plot and in every one of its criticisms is accurate.

I still haven’t seen Interstellar and have had it on Blu-Ray since day one (steelbook junkie but now I’m thinking upgrade to 4k)

JAY AND SILENTBOB: REBOOT 2/5

Well you know I’m a fan of characters and recently of their product. Overall it was kind of what I expected, a bit letdown. It has some good moments for laughs and a touching continuation of Chasing Amy. We get our cameos from past films and some new comers too, but no Randal :( Glad it was available for streaming on Prime

ZOMBIELAND 2: DOUBLE TAP 4K 2/5

Yeah another disappointment. It too has some moments (bonus credit scenes) and some brief cameos too. I just found it was lacking that “the world has gone to hell and so let’s have some fun”  They try with new zombies but they didn’t add much to the excitement and seem to borrow scenes from better zombie films. Like a lot of other better zombie film, and I found the ending a bit cheesy and easy.

What were your problems with it by comparison?

I remember having a really hard time grappling with the logistics of space travel. That's something I normally wouldn't worry about in your average sci-fi movie, but they had made a big deal about partnering with theoretical physicist, and that this was going to depict things like black holes and travelling through a wormhole as scientifically accurate as possible. So I kept getting distracted with that stuff that I didn't understand, focusing on the nuts and bolts that didn't really matter. Then I missed out on a lot of the character and emotional beats, so it felt like a ultimately shallow movie the first time around.

Spoiler

One big example is everything surrounding the water planet. Is it really 100% covered by water? Is it this shallow everywhere? How are these mile-high waves being made? If it is so close to a black hole that time is going at the rate of 7 Earth years per hour, would that ever be a place that could sustain human life? Isn't it getting slowly pulled into that black hole? Why is time not speeding up like that for Romilly, who was either orbiting the planet or just flying close by? This is what I'm busy thinking about, not the internal and external conflicts of the team and the emotional impact this journey is having on them.

I will say the one thing they point out that still really bugs me is the watch at the end. At first he relies on pushing books off a shelf for Morse Code. Ok, I can handle that. But somehow encoding a complex equation about gravity onto a wristwatch? That's too much, man. At that point just have him pick up a fucking pencil and write it down.

As an aside I think it's funny @Greatoneshere is going IN on these movie discussions now and just a couple of weeks ago he said he was shy and didn't want to share his opinion. :p

I still feel the same why - this should tell you how hard it is for me to listen to myself on this. I know the futility, but yet, I persist. :p

You're right, while the Honest Trailers didn't go into those issues, I definitely had at least some of these issues as well when I first watched it. It's all part of the "this movie is dumb" aspect to me.

X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX 4K 2/5

Well I guess I’m spending my week off by watching mediocre movies. I thought the movie had a pretty cool opening and then it was pretty much downhill from there. Although there were a few moments I enjoyed on the train. The video was good with a slight softness to it, but the Atmos track can get pretty damn intense. I do have to mention that I wish this would of gotten the 3D release treatment like all the other X-Men movies. That first 30 minutes or so were screaming 3D awesomeness

That's pretty much what you gotta do with a vast majority of cool movies, yeah.

Fixed for accuracy.

I recently watched Once Upon A Time In The West and thought...man, all this could've been avoided if you just stopped staring at dudes with guns for fucking MINUTES. LET IT GO!

That's really not the same at all, so I completely disagree, but okay.

FIRST MAN 4K 4.5/5

The streak of mediocracy is over. This movies pace might not work for everyone but I liked it. The 4K presentation was great and could easily distinguish the different film mediums that were used throughout. It was a well directed movie and kudos to that. Then you have the Atmos track that just rattles the walls, as everything feels like they are slowly closing in on you during the several takeoff scenes within the cabin. I think I liked it better then La La Land

First Man was severely underrated, I felt. Really great film.
