Hellbound (Season 2): 7/10

After three years the second season of Hellbound has arrived. It's hard to say what someone would want from a second season of this. I think they did well, and I did enjoy it, but it doesn't quite capture the feel of the first season but  it's mostly based on vibes. The first season had an overbearing sense of dread to it. This one doesn't quite capture that feeling but then again the world is also in a completely different place in the second season.

It's kind of hard to give a synopsis of this season without major spoilers for the first season so I will just donate these major points as [1] [2] [3] most of them revolving about what happened at the end of the first season.

Spoiler

1. A large part of the first season was about a newborn baby receiving a decree. The parents sacrificed themselves and the baby survived.

2. At the end of the first season a woman who had her execution televised, Park Jung-ja, came back to life

3. The chairman of the new truth, Jeong Jin-soo, had also been executed but it was kept a secret which sent the world into turmoil.

So the reason that the vibes are off in this season are because of [1] - After that happened New Truth were exposed as frauds and the more extreme faction out there, The Arrowhead, rose to power in a big way. While the New Truth set an oppressive tone through their lies, the Arrowhead are pure chaos. Pretty much the world is in a state of anarchy (this takes place 5 years after the first season) so that is why the fear isn't as prominent in this one. In any case because of [1] the Arrowhead discovered a "loophole" of sorts which involves drawing out the execution as long as possible in the name of forgiveness from god.

To create an equilibrium or to create some semblance of control the government attempts to cut a deal with the new truth relating to [2] but the attorney that founded Sodo (a counter organization to both groups), Min Hye-jin, also has interest in [2]. But [3] also returns and wants to speak with [2]. So as you can gather there is a lot of chaos.

The show does a good job of trying to recapture the magic of the first season while being it's own thing. A big standout from the first season was a ridiculous long shot action sequence. They do a similar thing in this season and it's arguably better (it's like a car action scene). But overall like I said the vibes aren't the same. It's still very good and as a bridge to a third season I feel it works well. Hopefully it doesn't take another three years for a new season to drop.

Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance: 7/10

I've never actually been a big Gundam person. I know about kids fighting in space and Tallgeese and that's about it. But I decided to check this out just for the heck of it I guess. I feel like this is a show that you need to know about Gundam but also don't need to know about Gundam. It's essentially Terminator with the Earth Federation Force (EFF) gundam as the terminator. The show focuses on the Zeon side of the war, basically space people, getting run out of Earth. The show is mostly just fighting and getting stalked and for that it is compelling enough. If you don't know much about Gundam the show doesn't really explain much to you so if you don't mind something like that and want to see robots fighting this is the show to watch.

As for the animation I feel like it's a mixed bag. The human movement feels kind of stifled and the movement slightly slower than natural. Once the action hits it looks pretty fluid though. I think it does lighting and special effects well, something you see in the intro for the show, it looks quite good. Overall not the best and not the worst looking show.

Interstellar was on TV so I watched it. Again. Still 1000/10.

There’s going to be an IMAX release in December. I keep refreshing the AMC app so see if/when it’ll be playing here. It’s one of my favorites, would love to see it on the big screen again.

Heretic...dang some killer performances in this one

The Mrs. & I saw it earlier today & we both enjoyed it a lot. Personally, I initially had forgotten that this was yet another A24 production! That genuinely made it feel more important,  considering I was going in to see Hugh's performance.  The way it almost just dives right the fuck in, dug it.

Pacing was solid throughout. As a former Roman Catholic, this film spoke to me on a multitude of levels. Poignant in my opinion, and I mean this sincerely, absolutely true from my POV.

Sophie Thatcher gas me stoked for Companion in early 2025.

I believe I watched the same broadcast, it's funny sometimes, revisiting a film years later from a different perspective in life, I was moved in this watch.

Weekend in Taipei ...aside from the ending being a bit anticlimatic compared to the rest of the action in the movie, it was a great mindless action flick.

We were the only ones in the theater though  we were going to do a double feature and try and catch Elevation but the only seats available were front row so we said screw that. Maybe tomorrow.

This movie is WILD. Easily the most visual film I've seen this year. Not exactly subtle in its message but it works really really well.

Damn. I'm REALLY interested in watching this but it's still not available to stream. You have to either buy it or pay $24 to rent it.

It’s streaming on Mubi, which is a pretty niche service but you can do a free trial.

Night Moves: 7/10

Gene Hackman, ever heard of this guy? He plays Harry Moseby, an ex-football player (for the Raiders!) turned private detective. He takes on a case from a retired actress to find her daughter, at the same he's dealing with his wife cheating on him. It feels like a bit of an unconventional detective movie. Normally a detective movie focuses on an investigation and whatnot. In this movie he just kind of finds the person and hangs out. That being said it is entertaining, kind of laid back. A very young James Woods and Melanie Griffith also make an appearance.

That movie is so good. Jennifer Warren is great in it.

I couldn't find it in myself to watch this. After reading how gory it is I just didn't want to experience this. Which is unfortunate because apparently Demi Moore has an amazing performance in this.

Deadpool & Wolverine 6/10…

knew all the cameos going in.. so its just a matter of the story managing to connect everything… it really didnt.. its as if Reynolds collected all the pieces then struggled to find a way to tell a story (the beginning drags quite a bit)… all the asides were meh, almost forced. Jackman as always does his job admirably and Cassandra was done well too… I dont know perhaps my headspace isnt right to enjoy the film.. ive grown indifferent to brand ambassador Reynolds and this particular movie felt like an extension of that (its not, im stupid)….  either way, I still prefer Deadpool 2 and missed those characters here. The 2 jokes I really enjoyed was the bad mouthing of Honda Odysseys (wife has one) and the wolverine wearing the colors of the LA Rams…

minus points for failing to say that wolverines mask looks like 2 Batmans kissing..

Yojimbo (Bodyguard, though not related to Kevin Costner)

Great as its always been. I tend to forget how the 2 warring factions start off a bit goofy and gradually their cruelty becomes more serious as Sanjuro plays them against each other… The final duel is great as always…choice of sound effects and the efficiency of Sanjuro is top notch.

In the grand scheme of ish I still prefer a Fistful of Dollars ever so slightly..though that may be a function of watching it first and the dad memories influence..

( I would hang a frame of both if I found it of course)

Oddly enough it also reminds me that there is actually a remake of a Fistful of Dollars being conjured up.. the original Italian producers are involved.. good luck topping Leone and Morricone

Yojimbo kicks so much ass. The way Kurosawa fills the frame with actors is so incredible.

Gladiator - I had seen this before, but only once ~15 years ago. Surprise, surprise: it rocks. Beneath all the trappings of a big historical epic is a pretty straightforward story of betrayal and vengeance. It’s easy to see how this was such an enduring, crowd pleasing hit. I’m now extremely curious about the sequel.

Sign up for MUBI on Amazon for a 7 day trial (TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE LITANY OF FILMS AVAILABLE NOWHERE ELSE!). Hell, its like $7/month, may as well support them and the film.

Also, why I responded, was watching this & was curious who has seen this film yet besides myself.

Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion: 7/10

For a long time my only knowledge of this movie was from the Fantômas cover of the song from the movie. But Amazon has this up on streaming in 4K so now I can see the real deal. This movie is categorized as a psychological / crime drama but I think more than anything it is a black comedy of sorts. The film, as the title insinuates, is about a police chief who visits his mistress and kills her only for the challenge of being above suspicion of the murder. Like he is so powerful that his colleagues would never suspect him of murder. Now, we all know this is a fantasy because in today's world you will get investigated but you likely won't get convicted, so this movie cuts out the fluff. It's an interesting look at a man who keeps escalating the investigation of himself and the ineptness of the people around him. Though the ending is left up in the air we all know what happened in the end.

Batman Caped Crusader

The grounded portions of the show are excellent and probably give the most "realistic" take on Batman ever put on screen but then they go and throw in a few supernatural episodes that feel completely against the grain of what the rest of the show is doing.

7.5/10

Every actress young or old can watch this… agree, then they will take a deep breath and go back into this exact grind

In This Corner of the World - 7/10

In This Corner of the World follows a girl named Suzu living in Eba, Hiroshima, in the late 1930s. So already you can tell where this thing is going to go. She's a talented artist if not a little absent-minded. One day she gets married off to a stranger and she moves to Kure, a city with a military port in Hiroshima. So a lot of the movie is just kind of everyday life leading up to the bombing. Cooking, getting rations, cleaning the house. Then once it happens it feels like life kind of just goes on. I watched the trailers after and they make the film seem like it was a very emotional movie centered around the bombings but it's actually small part of the movie. It's also not that emotional. It feels very lighthearted even in the darkest of times.

The anime is based on a manga by the same name so it has the same look as the manga. No offense to the style but it kind of looks a lot like those Red Bull commercials to me. Other than the environments I wasn't a huge fan of the style. Also a problem is that Amazon only has the English dub for streaming. I would have liked to have heard Non in this because a good chunk of the cast and Laura Post feel a little flat here. She has certainly done better. It's interesting seeing the real landmarks in the movie, before and after, like of the Hiroshima Dome and the historic events that took place like the firebombing. So overall it's a film with more positives than negatives, it just didn't hit all of the right notes.

The director's cut is even better, I definitely recommend watching it, it adds 40 additional minutes of footage to the movie.
