Scream and Scream 2

Both are like a 6/10 with just God awful acting. I get I shouldn't expect great acting in a teen horror movie but Jesus Christ it was cringe worthy.

Boy oh boy. Going from Scream 1&2 to Scream 5 was interesting.

Not only is the acting leagues better the brutality was on another level. This is a very effective slasher film. 8/10

And whatever happened to that Marvel movie marathon you were doing? :p

I gave up on that because in all honesty I'm not really into that genre. I got wrapped up in Marvel movies because I was a new user on the Meta Quest 3. I was using the IMAX 3D movie experience and typically films like the Marvel movies are ideal for that experience.

Once I had to take a break from VR all together that is when my Marvel dream died. :p

As for watching Scream, it was recommended to me on Netflix because of Halloween. I watched it then tried part 2.

Both are pretty solid slasher movies and iconic as well.

Then I went to rottentomatoes to see how the Sream movies were reviewed and part 5 caught my eye. I just finished watching it and I was really impressed. Extremely brutal death scenes with great acting to boot. I liked how they honored Wes Craven at the end.

That's a shame, the MCU movies you were getting to were some of the best ones, you may have liked those, but makes sense. What I found strange is you skipped Screams 3&4. :p

Most likely I will watch 3 and 4. Horror is one of my favorite genres. I used to go to a bunch of conventions in the early 2000's and I've met basically every horror legend.

Watching out of story order though? :p

Infinity Pool: 5/10

Interesting movie, I kind of like that it didn't try hard to be more than it was, a psychedelic horror show about the dangers of toxic friends.

Salem's Lot (2024): 6/10

Not terrible, not great, just like the book. Most of the changes sensibly compacted the plot without meaningfully changing it. I do wish we got big bald Straker instead of diet Matt Berry though. I also wish that people would finally learn to stop adapting King into movies when his books really need 6-8 episode miniseries'. In that vein they really really need to make a Duma Key series.

Unfortunately yes. I'm planning on watching Scream 3 this evening. Then 4 tomorrow.

Yeah, I was confused by parts in the last third where the movie fell apart a little, but overall this was a pretty good movie with a great setting, cast and premise that deserves more people see it, I barely saw any discussion online about the film. Definitely was worth a watch.

Strange Darling

First of all, Giovanni Ribisi, I knew you could always act, but as a DP, sir your talent ASTOUNDS!

What a fucking film! Kyle Gallner always brings it, but JFC SLAP ME AIDEAYS! Willa Fitzgerald made a statement in this role. Not so much career defining, as it is a message to ALL that this woman can fucking bring it! (She was a standout in Reacher S1!)

Do yourself a favor, support a wondrous film & rent it digital for $6 or outright buy the BluRay for about $20. Go in blind, trust me on this!

I think you just talked me into watching this tonight instead of Scream 3. I'll rent it for $6 on Amazon prime.

I read Epitaph by Mary Doria Russell. It is such an incredible book about Tombstone that it got me watching a bunch of movies about that.

I rewatched My Darling Clementine which is one of my favorite movies ever. Not historically accurate but who cares. Henry Fonda and Victor Mature are so good.

Then I watched Hour of the Gun. This one is pretty unique for a Wyatt Earp movie. It starts with the gunfight, then has the trial, and then goes to the vendetta ride. Most of them end with the gunfight. James Garner is really good as Earp. Robert Ryan is, as always, a great villain. Just wish he had more to do.

The last one I watched was Law and Order starring Walter Huston.  The dialogue was actually written by his son John! They were afraid of being sued by Earp’s widow, so all of the names are changed. Harry Carey is sort of in the Doc role, I’d never seen him in a speaking role before. The gunfight is really good, and Huston has a great final speech. Some weird sound though, like they haven’t quite figured out how to use mics yet (it’s from 1932).

I’d probably rank Wyatt Earp movies like so:

My Darling Clementine

Forty Guns

Hour of the Gun

Gunfight at the OK Corral

Law and Order

Tombstone

Warlock (such a boring adaptation of such a good book)

Will you be watching Costner's Wyatt Earp movie as well?

If I can find a copy I don’t have to pay for, yes!

I understand not choosing to do it, but you could easily:

I also believe some users here are sharing their Plex servers/accounts so others here can see their movies, maybe someone here can get Wyatt Earp available for you as an alternative. I forget who is though.

Always happy to share when I find gold. Overall, what did you think?

I just noticed this post now.

It was an extremely unique way to tell a story. At least it was for me. The acting was superlative especially Willa Fitzgerald. I don't think I've seen her in anything I've watched but she was very impressive.

It's a pretty simple premise but was done masterfully.

Barbarian: 6/10

More awkward and strange than scary Barbarian is a wild ride in the state of Michigan. A woman (Tess) arrives to a house in the middle of a rainy night, an airbnb, but ends up in an awkward situation when she finds out someone else is staying there, the house double booked on separate apps. While it is difficult for a man to convince a woman she will be safe if she stays alone with a complete stranger, the man (Keith) somehow manages to ease the situation. But as frightening as socially awkward situations are, there is something more sinister lurking in the house, or beneath the house.

Rather than focusing on this though the film shifts to a Hollywood actor being accused of sexual assault. In order to pay for his legal feels he must liquidate some of his property, and he just so happens to own the house that Tess and Keith are staying at. So then we go back to the house to figure out the whole mystery of what's going on under the house. It's a well put together movie and has some tense moments but feels more weird and disjointed more than anything. Most of the characters make some of the worst decisions. Obviously there wouldn't be a movie if Tess decided to get out of Dodge but there are several times she probably should have done that. A film that's got the right vibes but just a bit too silly.

I have watched a lot over the past couple of months but stopped posting reviews for some reason. Last night I watched

Oddity

It sucked, silly looking monster that barely does anything and minimal other threat throughout.

3/10

Alien Romulus

Strong entry in the franchise. Middle 30 minutes is a bit mediocre but the end was really well done with a couple of "wow I haven't seen that before" set pieces. The android character of Andy though is what stands out most about the movie, he honestly might be the most empathetic/sympathetic character I have ever seen, absolute emotional manipulation by the film makers against the audience but god damn was it effective.

A-Team 2010. 7/10-  It still a solid watch.. it projects the spirit and “absurdities” of the TV series but at the big screen scale. Its fun, has solid action, and Patrick Wilson is fun as the dorky CIA man Lynch.  I suppose my “big” gripe is the way the movie “promotes” Bradley Coopers “Faceman” at the expense of Hannibal Smith… makes Hannibal look “incompetent”… but otherwise its a fun watch independent of the TV show itself

Hellbound (Season 01): 8/10

There are very few things people are less interested in hearing about around here than Hellbound but I had to rewatch it before the new season. While it's not normally something I usually do, at 6 episodes it's quite easy to get through again. It's interesting to vaguely recall some things and witness them again, despite having already seen it the experience still felt fresh. You've probably all read the summary in the other thread so I won't repeat too much. The show is basically about a phenomenon that occurs where creatures appear after a decree and burn the victim alive. Since there is no explanation for this, some people pervert the occurrences as proclamation from god and soon after these demonstrations become public knowledge these fanatics rise to power.

The show is split in half, basically three episodes that set up what's going to happen and three episodes long after what happens has been established. I think the show is very effective in encapsulating a variety of emotions, namely fear, confusion, desolation, and anger. I think maybe some will be under the impression this is a monster show, focusing on the, "creatures from hell," but it's more about the uneasiness and atmosphere set up by the "New Truth" church and the oppressive environment they have established. I think it's smartly written. People are already irrational so they make irrational decisions. I think even the final episode is a bit frustrating but there is a pay off there. In any case I'll be looking forward to starting the new season soon.

So sorry to hear you didn't enjoy Oddity. Personally, I find it in my top 10 of the year thus far.

I watched The Devil's Advocate. I've seen it way back and remember being impressed with Al Pacino's performance. Well he is phenomenal in this and his speech at the end about God is so fuckin good.

Keanu is very good as a lawyer in this and Charlize was great too. She looked very young in this. I looked it up and she was only 23yrs old.

Body Bags: 7/10

Body Bags is an anthology of three short movies. It's not really traditional horror, more along the lines of silly tales that are a bit gruesome. John Carpenter plays a mortician throwing out a bunch of corny jokes to introduce all the stories. The first film is the most traditional of the three about a woman who works overnight as a gas station attendant. It's got a lot of jump scare attempts but it's a bit silly since if you're working at a gas station you're going to expect some customers to show up. Then the second movie turns up the star power a bit and stars Stacy Keach in one of the most horrifying subjects for men, hair loss. This one also stars Sheena Easton and Deborah Harry. Finally the third one has Mark Hamill as a baseball player that has an eye transplant but afterward ends up with some psychological issues. Not much more to say, it's just good silly fun with a lot of unexpected cameos.

The Substance:

In a word, yo encapsulate all of which both Margaret, but more importantly, Demi's performance... BRAVE!

The body horror is peak Cronenberg but there's a point to it and it's all set up. Not quite as good as I had been hoping but still totally grateful for having seen it.
