With the fourth weekend of October now having passed, my wife and I got through a bunch more horror films, see the second bracket below (first bracket is from the first three weekends):

A Quiet Place Part II (2020): 7.5/10

The Shallows (2016): 7/10

Halloween (1978): 8/10

Halloween (2018): 7.5/10

Halloween Kills - Extended Cut (2021): 7.5/10

Halloween Ends (2022): 7.5/10

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022): 7.5/10

Candyman (1992): 8/10

Candyman (2021): 8/10

Hellraiser (1987): 8/10

Hellraiser II: Hellbound 8/10

Hellraiser (2022): 7.5/10

The Thing (1982): 8/10

The Thing (2011): 7/10

Werewolf By Night (2022): 7.5/10

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984): 7/10

Nope (2022): 8/10

Open Water (2004): 7.5/10

Night of the Living Dead (1968): 8/10

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987): 7.5/10 (co-written by Wes Craven and Frank Darabont(!), great effects and a direct sequel to the first film)

Event Horizon (1997): 7/10 (not particularly scary but wonderful set and production design and practical FX that make for beautiful shots to set a great tone)

Friday the 13th - Uncut (1980): 7.5/10 (better than I remember it, with some particularly creepy, voyeuristic sequences and kills)

Freddy vs. Jason (2003): 7/10 (request by my wife, movie was actually silly but fun, with great effects and choreographed action scenes, not scary at all though)

Jacob's Ladder (1990): 8/10 (great psychological horror film, slow burn, excellent Tim Robbins performance, established sense of unease throughout the movie)

The Descent - Original UK Version (2005): 8/10 (super unique horror film, plenty scary even when they are just cave diving, some great shots, finally can see in 4K)

The Exorcist - Extended Director's Cut (1973): 8.5/10 (an absolute classic for a reason, takes its time, genuinely off putting at times, great acting all around)

Tremors (1990): 8/10 (always enjoy this film, so many quotable lines, genuinely well done tremor sequences and effects, unique setting and comedy tone)

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021): 6/10 (loss of the writers and director James Wan from the first two movies shows, fun and solidly done but not scary, very action-y)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): 8.5/10 (my wife makes us watch this every October, great movie but I've seen it too many times, amazing stop motion tho)

Hocus Pocus 2 (2022): 5/10 (I never saw the original, my wife, whose family loves the first, made me watch the first last year, not good. To be fair, this one was well done for what it was, I just find all the over acting and stupidity kind of annoying, not my kind of thing but I know there are a lot of fans)

My wife is going on vacation this upcoming Friday so this is it for horror movies, except we're going to try to watch some this week, so I may have a few more to add before this is all over.

I’ve been enjoying it to but last night I watched malignant cuz of the 9.9 and let’s just say it wasn’t for me

It's a divisive film. My wife felt the same way as you did.

Thats my bad, in hind sight it’s probably more of an 8.5. But I was just in the perfect mood to be caught off guard by the bat shit crazy third act. I was laughing so hard at the police station scene. I had no idea that’s were it was going.

Whereas this is where I landed. I was laughing my ass of during the final third just being like: "we have gone way past jumping the shark" and sort of bought into it all. My wife just thought it was dumb though and did not understand my reaction by comparison.

It just felt so Evil Dead to me. That’s what all horror should be imo, there should be an element of silliness to it. To many horror movies take themselves way to seriously.

Oct 21: Hocus Pocus 2 - 5/10

Oct 22: Cast a Deadly Spell - 9/10

Oct 23: Scanners - 7.5/10

After Cast a Deadly Spell I was in the mood for more excellent 80s/early 90’s practical effects and figured since I knocked Videodrome off my shame list I should knock off Scanners as well.  I liked it a bit more than Videodrome. The story is a little more coherent and interesting. Plus Michael Ironside 1000x better than James Woods. I enjoyed it, I’m glad that I’ve seen it and that I’ve now seen that gif in its full context lol. Not sure id ever have a desire to see it again though haha.

If you want more good horror films by David Cronenberg on top of Scanners and Videodrome, I highly recommend The Brood, The Dead Zone, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Existenz, and Spider. You may have seen some of those I assume. The rest of Cronenberg's horror films are just okay (he's done great non-horror films though).

Under The Skin - 7/10

I think this one really had a lot going for itself but falls apart almost completely in its third act. I don't want to spoil the whole thing so I'll leave it at that. The rest though, it's just a thoroughly eerie film that's worth seeing at least once for what it DOES do well. Exceptional soundtrack, special shoutout to that. I originally saw this in the theater and wasn't in the mood for it at all and hated it, figured I'd revisit.

Angel Heart - 7/10

I've seen it probably four times total now and there's always something that irks me about it despite absolutely loving all its parts. I hate to say the cliche out loud but the book is just so much better and the story much more fleshed out and it just makes more sense. The film meanders too much especially later on, it never really picks up its pace until the big reveal occurs and then it ends very abruptly. It's a good idea but doesn't necessarily work very well in practice for me and that's probably what always bothers me about it. Then again, the mood, the INCREDIBLE sets, just how dark it is, it's still a great movie despite its flaws.

I found this movie to be an experience. I've never felt more like an alien watching the human species without understanding them than I did with this film. I think given it's more an experience than even a film I think a 7/10 is pretty low. 8/10 or 8.5/10 for me.

My daughter being in the school band and after attending a few competitions I decided to go back and watch Drumline as I recalled it being pretty solid.. Despite starting  Nick Cannon whom I find mostly annoying.

Drumline 7/10.. Pretty good overall but it seems I had forgotten just how obnoxious the main character played by Cannon was.. everything and everyone else was great.. the “girl push up” scene is still hilarious.. Zoe Saldaña of course is stupidly beautiful and charming in this… not great but solid.

Sorority Row: 5/10

Sorority Row is a film with a lot of promise but ultimately executed poorly. Starring the charismatic Briana Evigan from the Step Up movies, all that charisma is wasted as the movie is centered around a sorority of very unlikable people. Early on they stage a prank with a guy during a party, faking one of the sorority sister's deaths. The guy ends up actually killing her and then everyone (well mostly everyone) decides to keep it a secret because the last two words of their sorority motto are secrecy and solidarity. But 8 months later someone is taking revenge for what happened to the girl. It's almost a Friday the 13th setup, except this movie makes the mistake of making you want these people to die. Not only are the girls terrible but the whole college attitude here is obnoxious. Heck Carrie Fisher shows up here in a rare non Star Wars role as Mrs. Crenshaw, and we all know there are not good Crenshaws in the world. In any case the movie really falls apart in the end when it tries to outsmart the viewer with a whodunit that doesn't quite make sense. Overall this could have been an ok movie but in the end the filmmakers decided to just make a cast of characters to hate with story that doesn't quite add up.

And now for something completely different haha. Found this one deep into a Netflix deep dive. Kind of a cross between a fairy tale and a legend retelling. Story set in the mid 1800’s Basque Country. Blacksmith makes a deal with a Devil then captures the Devil. Then it goes from there. Loved the look and atmosphere. Pretty much everything is a practical effect. Not high budget by any means but it looks great. Think Legend without the vasaline on the lense haha. I love these kinds of rustic horror fairy tales.

I dunno if this really counts but I don’t care, it’s over an hour so I’m considering it a movie. I really like the presentation of the anthology but i kinda wish it was a bit more? More on the side of Tales and Mortuary Tales vs the more Twilight Zone style they went with. The first story is utterly fantastic. I was bummed when it ended because I wanted to know more. The second story was ok. Not bad but not really memorable in any way.

I’ve been watching a lot of stuff lately that is barely worth mentioning, but I want to give a shout-out to Saloum, a movie from Senegal that’s been getting some buzz since it appeared on Shudder last month. It packs a lot into its trim 84-minute runtime, and even when certain aspects didn’t really work for me, I still appreciated the attempt, if that makes sense. It’s a lot of fun.

This was fantastic. I don’t remember ever seeing anything quite like this. Both story wise and visually. There’s a lot of “odd” camera shots that almost felt like they were just kinda “fuck it I read about this shot, let’s try it!” But whatever I dug it. Kinda reminded me of watching an early Sam Raimi movie. Definitely don’t look up anything about this, less you know about it the better the experience will be!

I didn’t know much about this before starting. So I absolutely HATED it until about halfway through. Which is when I realized it was meant to be satire lol. After that I was able to laugh a bit and ended up enjoying it. I think my favorite, most subtle touch was that they never put their cell phones down through the whole movie haha. Also, can we get Lee Fucking Pace up to leading man level already. The dude is amazing in literally everything. I want Lee Pace vs Henry Cavill in something.

Submarine - Fine debut, but kinda sloppy, even for a movie that's so heavy on flat-center-framing.

Black Adam - As whatever as a Dwayne Johnson-superhero movie sounds. Collet-Serra clears up some of the CGI choreography.

The Double (2013, rewatch) - Still wish this stuck the landing in the back end, but stylistically this is wonderful. Hard shadows for life!

Aftersun - I kept waiting for this to get histrionic based on the responses it got, but it never did, so kudos for that alone. Really well-done memory film with a DV-tape framing device. Two needle-drop scenes are great, especially the latter. Definite grower.

Armageddon Time - Knew it was fairly autobiographical, but didn't realize it was so About Something, much less white privilege. Still sorting this one out. Gray's got some balls, if that wasn't already evident with his last couple movies. I'll be That Guy and say I don't think the kid playing Paul is particularly good. I can see why he was cast, but there's a lot of moments where someone stronger could've done more.

The Banshees of Inisherin - Fan-feckin-tastic

Please Baby Please - Andrea Riseborough is everything in this. The movie itself is already on an odd wavelength its own, but she is the MOST. Good time.

Fucking fantastic. Sebastian Stan absolutely crushes it. I don’t have a ton to say about it other than it’s just such a fun ride. Perfect about of levity, social commentary, satire and trope flipping. Loved it. Just watch it.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 3.5/5

Finally I got chance to watch this and I overall enjoyed. I think the the first and last third of the movie are strong/emotional and fun. The middle sort of drags a bit but it still had moments. The kids were great with Mckenna Grace being the real standout of them all and really channeling her film grandfather. Now there were creative things people didn’t appreciate but I think it worked and had no issues. The 4K disc shines with a little creative softness here and there, but your subwoofer gets a great workout throughout. The Atmos track was good but would of liked more prominent overhead elements, but GREAT panning with my added middle side left and right speakers. Plus they leave that ending open for a sequel for sure, well the very end credit bonus scene does.

Fuck this movie. I have never been more angry watching a movie before. I’m usually pretty easy going with movies, I can only think of a handful I genuinely hate. Well add one more. Fuck this movie a thousand times.

Just curious, did you know anything about this movie going into it? Because I was prepared, not for anything story specific, but knowing that it was deeply disturbing.

IP MAN 4 2.5/5

Well I had my friend over for a visit and it was only fitting that we finally finished our Ip Man series of films after Covid. Overall is was sadly one of the weaker films but some great up close fights. What came off surprisingly too me was this really felt like a Chinese Propaganda movie of evil America but China strong and safe. The story also comes off weak and pretty much sets up little/big fights too happen, but lands a touching ending. Not too much wire fu like fighting unlike in the 2nd and weakest of the 4 films(best being 1, 3, 4 and 2) Also what felt weird, maybe I need to tweak my new receiver audio delay, was that all English actors sync seemed off but Chinese actors all seem to be fine in both Chinese/English speaking moments. Sound was good with the sub hitting with every over amplified hit and they’re a lot of them in the 2nd half. The 4K disc had a constant softness with a warm yellowish glow like in watching an older Chinese Martial arts film. Atmos track wasn’t in constant use but came alive in the Chinese Lunar Celebration. So pretty good disc, good fights(not the best either) but again it comes off like propaganda

The Possession: 6/10

The Possession is based on a true story that took place over the course of 29 days. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick and Matisyahu this cast is absolutely loaded! Well actually that's all of the load. It's basically a Jewish version of The Exorcist. There's a box carved with Hebrew that Clyde (Jeffery Dean Morgan) and his daughters find at a garage sale and one of the girls wants it for some reason so he buys it for them. Turns out there's an evil spirit in that box and once opened possesses one of the girls and creepy stuff happens and since  Clyde and his wife are going through a divorce can't find any correlation between the box and the odd behavior of their daughter.

The movie isn't particularly scary but it does have some interesting effects. Also, it doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel which isn't necessarily a bad thing as I think the movie was made with care. Despite that it does still fall back on a lot of cliches (How many movies like this involve the main character visiting a friend who is a professor that knows about the artifact they brought in?). Overall it's a nice waste of time and a decent "one of these" movies.

The Patient (Hulu series)

Not sure what to rate it ultimately but I will say that it's sticking with me and left me feeling really not good. It's interesting because in some ways it feels very restrained and in others it feels about as relentlessly bleak as it gets, on an emotional level that is. On a technical level, or whatever you wanna call it, I did think it kind of started treading water somewhere in the middle and started feeling repetitive and slightly exhausting. Considering the episodes are 22 minutes each typically, I was surprised by that.

It's hard to talk about this one at all without spoiling the entire show. It's all in the minutiae and details, the overall premise/plot itself is very simple and not really the point.

Oct 29: Speak No Evil - 0/10

Fuck this movie. I have never been more angry watching a movie before. I’m usually pretty easy going with movies, I can only think of a handful I genuinely hate. Well add one more. Fuck this movie a thousand times.

damn...a 0!!! That almost makes me want to watch to see how bad it is

Just curious, did you know anything about this movie going into it? Because I was prepared, not for anything story specific, but knowing that it was deeply disturbing.

No not really. It wasn’t the nature of the bad stuff that happened that pissed me

off. I mean it’s horrible but no worse than some other stuff I’ve seen.

It’s the decision making or lack thereof. I don’t want to go into too much detail because this steaming pile of shit isn’t worth the effort to click the spoiler button. I just kind of didn’t like it until the last 25 minutes. That’s when it actively pissed me

off. Acting, music, look are all great. It’s the plot.

I watched Barbarian and I'm honestly starting to think I just don't enjoy modern Horror anymore, period. I should stop trying. I didn't like anything about this flick past the opening. I also cannot stand Justin Long, he makes me want to turn movies off.

I watched this on Halloween and it was meh

Marebito: 5/10

Marebito follows a videographer named Masuoka. Upon watching a video of a dude in a subway that stabbed a knife into one of his eyes Masuoka becomes intrigued by the idea of fear and the type of fear that would cause someone to do that. So the setup is that he is looking for the ultimate terror, something no one has seen before. What he finds is some girl after exploring some underground tunnels and the only thing she will do is drink blood and sleep. So Masuoka begins trying to acclimate the girl to becoming a regular person while also becoming a murderer and perhaps finding the fear he was looking for all along.

The premise was a lot more interesting than the execution. There was a lot of hype about an ultimate fear and the beginning of the movie was a bit creepy but once he finds the girl it becomes pretty mundane. Perhaps if the movie followed the path of the conspiracy theories regarding Richard Shaver and Kaspar Hauser it would have been more interesting than what it ended up being.
